24.01.2022 Training the gut, or adapting it to large volume of fluid and food during exercise, can reduce GI symptoms common in endurance athletes and improve performance.
24.01.2022 Nice little video to explain muscle growth. Bottom line; work + nutrition + rest = growth ... + + =
24.01.2022 Just a quiet reminder - fad diets that restrict how, when, what or why you eat are not magical and they do not unlock some hidden metabolic secret to effective weight loss. If you adhere to them you eat less...simple. Eating less = caloric deficit = weight loss.
23.01.2022 A well written little cautionary tail about the difference between scientific consensus and the headlines that we often see in the media. This definitely applies to nutrition as we all to often see headlines on the news or in the papers telling us that [insert food] is this week good/bad for us based purely on a snippet of an outcome from a study without providing any context or overview of all the known evidence.
23.01.2022 Probably longer than you think!
20.01.2022 Moving towards better health can involve many strategies, often its about starting with what is the "low hanging fruit", the part of your life that it will be easiest to make positive changes in. The rest of the changes will come with time as you realise the benefits of the changes that you have already made!
19.01.2022 What nutrition options will contribute the most to improving your athletic performance? General diet: 80-90% Pros: greatest nutritional impact on performance and general health, cheakper than supplements.... Cons: none Supplements: 5-20% Pros: can be a convenient way to increase the amounts of carbohydrates and protein in your diet. Cons: expensive compared to real food options, may also be missing important nutrients if used too much. Erogenic aids: 1-5% Pros: when chosen to match specific performance needs, can provide a desirable boost to performance. Cons: can be expensive, probably not appropriate for recreational athletes.
18.01.2022 Eating fruits and vegetables is good for you!! Its not just the fact that you are eating them its what you aren't eating; high fruit and vegetable intake is associated with lower intake of foods high in saturated fats, sugar and salt which can all have negative impacts on your health when eaten in large amounts.
17.01.2022 Is milk good or bad for? Personal preferences aside, if you want to answer such a question it is important to loo at what the evidence says. In a paper that bought together much of the evidence collected from some of the biggest studies ever done the conclusion was that;... milk and dairy product consumption can 1. help us meet out nutritional needs (especially calcium and is a great source of high biological value protein), 2. may protect against many major diseases, 3. has few adverse effects. The important consideration is, of course, that the ability of an individual to see these benefits is dependant on a persons level of tolerance (as few as 15% of Northern Europeans experience some level of tolerance issues while as much as 90% of those with asian heritage experience some level of intolerance) and also the health of a persons gut. Overall it is a simple answer, milk and milk products are good for your health.
16.01.2022 Just some Friday funnies!
15.01.2022 Interesting new study which shows that getting all of your exercise on a few days a week has the same protective effect as regularly getting 30 minutes a day, 7 days a week. It is always interesting when studies like this come out. If they can be replicated in other study group then we may see changes to our broad, population based health recommendations.
15.01.2022 I'm sure we all know someone who this might apply to.... While this heading is pure click bait it is interesting how we prioritise our time when it comes to our daily routine and the impact this has on our health.
15.01.2022 The ketogenic diet is one that has gained some media attention recently and is likely one that will continue to be talked about. Worth a read for a guide on what they are and why they are being talked about!
15.01.2022 Fat is one of those dietary components that has run the gamut from being demonised (think about all those low fat food alternatives out there) to put on a pedestal as the latest tool to fight any number of excess weight (the whole ketone thing is definitely the diet Fad for this summer). This is a handy little article that gives a great introduction to the types of dietary fat (they are not all equal) and some considerations on incorporating them into a healthy diet.
14.01.2022 Great little summary on the current state of research into the ketogenic diet and sports performance.
14.01.2022 Top tips to avoid those hangry feels!
12.01.2022 Many supplements have been shown to provide benefits for athlete of various competition level, but without a diet to support performance their effectiveness is reduced.
12.01.2022 A healthy diet allows your body to respond better to illness, this means that you will get sick less often and not get as sick when you do..... just another reason to keep those fruits, veggie's, wholegrain, lean meats and healthy fats coming!
11.01.2022 Calories count, there is no doubt but it is easy to get caught up in counting calories and forget about where those calories are coming from. "Empty calories", or foods without any other nutritional value, are certainly once we want to be avoiding while maintaining a good balance of healthy, nutritious foods in our diet.
11.01.2022 This is data from the US, and admittedly doesn't include Australian predictions but given that our obesity rates rival those of the US the projections are scary. Keep in mind that these are obesity levels (over 45% by 2030) and do not include those that are projected to be classified as overweight. Obesity is linked to a significantly increased risk of chronic disease and some cancers, the human as well as the financial cost of these sorts of figures will be significant.
10.01.2022 My first blog but still one of my favourites
09.01.2022 While this article is pretty wordy, and probably (or maybe not) interesting to only my fellow dietitian it is a great reminder that the science of nutrition is still a young one. As new evidence becomes available so our recommendations can change, as is the recent revisions for sodium, most commonly found in our diet as a component of salt. These recent revisions focus on population based recommendations that aim to reduce the incidence of high blood pressure, a strong determinant indicator for many chronic diseases.
08.01.2022 Sport performance can be severely hampered by dehydration as a result of sweat loss or simple not drinking enough before starting exercise. Sweat losses increase with increasing temperature and humidity as well as exercise intensity. Sweat rates differ between individuals and are effected by the type of activity being undertaken. ... Water ( for short duration sports) and sports drinks (for endurance or high intensity sports) are the most effective options for maintaining hydaration and peak performance.
08.01.2022 FODMAPS can be a problem for some with symptoms and severity varying from person to person. This is a nice little infographic which explains what is going on in our gut.
06.01.2022 How many health buzz words does it take to sell a product? I'm counting 8..... honestly not ever sure what this is .
06.01.2022 Hydration - important for athletic and cognitive performance!
06.01.2022 Love seeing research like this translated into messages that can be applied to improving our health. Sleep is an often forgotten component of an overall healthy lifestyle and this research from 2010 has highlighted its impact on body composition change during dieting. Improving our body composition (that is focusing on increasing muscle mass rather than watching the scale) has significant long term, positive, impacts on our health. Adequate sleep, along with good nutrition a...nd remaining active through the day all play their part. #nutritiontactics #nutrition #sleep #healthylifestyle
05.01.2022 The research is in and; "....a healthy diet consistent with Australian Dietary Guidelines is cheaper than the current diet for most Australians..." The challenge for many people is often the knowledge and time required to more closely follow a healthy diet. This article provides some helpful tips to improve your diet with a mind towards your budget.
04.01.2022 Good, common sense approaches to healthy weight loss and diet decisions don't go out of fashion!
03.01.2022 Definitely worth a read if you want a pretty entertaining breakdown of the calorie in, calorie out argument.
03.01.2022 Love this little illustration - Creatine is the most tested supplement available and has been shown to be safe, relatively cheap and effective at increasing an athletes ability to train harder and lift heavier.
02.01.2022 This is such a challenge, I can easily rattle off a couple of high profile so called health/nutrition gurus that cause me to tear my hair out every time I see their latest social media post or book.
01.01.2022 Caloric deficit. That is all.
