25.01.2022 PARENTING STYLES There is no parenting handbook that comes with a baby when theyre born! We often learn through our own experiences by being parented by the people who brought us up.... Sometimes, we learn helpful, and not-so-helpful styles from those before us There are many styles and blends of parenting that are not displayed in this picture, because we are complex and dynamic, and do not fit into one "category" But it is helpful to reflect on how we parent and to be aware of the effects it can have on our childrens growth and development of their sense of self Through our Therapeutic Play Groups, we provide skills, tips and tricks to find the style that is unique to you and your child Email or FB message us to enrol and find out more

24.01.2022 OUTDOOR PLAY When was the last time you were able to get outside and play with the kids? (granted, it may not be possible for you right now). Playing outdoors promotes healing and allows us to use all of our senses to explore the environment and interact with living things.... Perhaps on your walks, you could collect bits and pieces of nature to bring into your space for your kids to play with If you cant get outside, try to introduce messy/sensory play in a designated (easy to clean) space inside! 19.01.2022 AUTISM & UNITYS THERAPEUTIC PLAY GROUPS - PART 2 How our groups can help: Managing emotion can be especially difficult for those with ASD. Helping children regulate emotion can be learnt through play. Through firm but gentle limit setting and returning responsibility, children have the opportunity to increase their ability to manage emotion.... Our groups provide a sense of safety. We embrace a childs right to be different. This often results in certain behaviours reducing in intensity. Engaging in therapeutic play can help address anxiety, which often co-occurs in children with ASD. If you would like for you and your child to be a part of this, REGISTER now for our Therapeutic Play Group, commencing Monday 27 July. Email [email protected] or message on FB for more info Sources: Play Therapy Melbourne

12.01.2022 We love this infographic created by @autism.nutritionist There are so many underlying reasons as to why children become seemingly "fussy" As frustrating as it can be for parents who want to make sure theyre children are receiving good nutrition, oftentimes, the refusal to eat certain foods is just the tip of the iceberg, and goes deeper than "theyre just being picky"... Its important that we never force feed or (unintentionally) create fear/anxiety around mealtimes. Taking a step back and responding empathically is the first, best step. In our Therapeutic Play Group Program, we show you what that looks like. To be a part of our groups, reach out to us today! Disclaimer: We always recommend consulting with medical professionals for appropriate advice. #fussyeaters #kidsnutrition

11.01.2022 TODDLER TANTRUMS Did you know that when children have tantrums, it acts as a reset button? Scientifically speaking, meltdowns sometimes change the chemistry in the brain ... It can be a very significant discharge of their neurochemistry that can help their nervous system to reorganise and recalibrate. Kind of like us adults, how we feel better after a big cry! To learn more, like and follow our page. Also feel free to get in touch with us to find out how we can provide support

10.01.2022 Hello parents and caregivers How are we all doing? How are the kids coping? We know that there are lots of posts about staying positive floating around via social media, but we also understand the importance of validating our own feelings, and the feelings of our children ... That means acknowledging how we (and they) are feeling, without rushing through it. This is something that we can support you and the kids through, via our online Therapeutic Play Groups. Each week we have a new topic that we cover, that adds to your current toolkit of managing big emotions, and deepens your bond with your kiddies. To find out how to be a part of our groups, reach out to us today via on [email protected] or Facebook messenger.

09.01.2022 ADJUSTING TO NEWBORN ARRIVAL We know that it can be hard for toddlers to adjust to the arrival of their new sibling. Our 3 top tips:... Dont be surprised if your toddler regresses a little and acts a bit like a baby. Plenty of physical and emotional attention, and one-on-one time with your toddler will help with the transition. Your toddler can be your little helper! E.g. passing the nappies, passing the dummy, etc. As much as possible, keep your toddler routines the same. Predictability & consistency = feeling safe & secure. Want to know more? Message us today!

08.01.2022 AUTISM & UNITYS THERAPEUTIC PLAY GROUPS - PART 1 How our groups can help: Children with ASD often struggle with social communication and interaction, which can cause feelings of isolation. In our groups, children will be able to communicate in a way in which they feel most comfortable, often non-verbally. Through this safety and freedom they start working out what is effective and not. This improved communication can then extend to their home and school environment.... Although children with ASD may play differently to other children, it is STILL play in which they express themselves and communicate their world. Play is the language of children. When toys are used, these become the words for children that they may not be able to express verbally. Children with ASD can have difficulty empathising and understanding the perspective of others. Our group can help children have the opportunity to experience empathy within relationship through play, and grow in their ability to empathise with others. Stay tuned for PART 2 later this week! If you would like for you and your child to be a part of this, REGISTER now for our Therapeutic Play Group, commencing Monday 27 July. 05.01.2022 Being in each others space all the time can be tough. This is a common theme that our parents have brought up: SIBLING RIVALRY ... Oftentimes, this occurs because children are trying to define who they are; as an individual, and as a member of a family unit. We all have roles to play. But how do we know them, if we are still trying to figure out who WE are? It also occurs because the children are in need of relationship, and get connection even if through arguments, attempting to fulfil the need for control in the uncertain circumstances that we face. Remember that their behaviours are telling us something. Using empathic reflection of whats going on for them, and hearing what they have to say often helps. It does not mean that we are enabling behaviours, nor taking sides, but understanding where the child is coming from, and working together to help the situation. In our Therapeutic Play Group Program, we show caregivers how to do this. Connect with us today to find out more

04.01.2022 We are so looking forward to meeting you and your little ones next week! Afraid that youve missed out? Its not too late to REGISTER Email [email protected] or message on FB

04.01.2022 FRIENDLY REMINDER TO PARENTS DURING THESE TIMES... Follow your instincts; deep down you know what you and your kids need, in any given moment. Lower your expectations of yourselves, and your kids.... Avoid comparing yourself to other parents. If you do want advice, take it from a select few with whom you trust, and do your best to tune out the others. You are doing the best that you can. There is no room for guilt here. HAVE FUN, whatever that looks like for you and your family. Through our groups at Unity, we embrace parents to be exactly who they are, with a few added tools in their toolkit. We reject the idea of the "perfect parent", because it doesnt exist! To be a part of a supportive environment where you can connect with like-minded families and add new skills to your toolkit, enrol with us for Term 4 Contact us via [email protected] or messenger

04.01.2022 EMOTIONS ARENT GOOD OR BAD! Its so important we validate how were feeling, and how the kids are feeling. Rushing through emotions does not help them to release, and instead, they fester and resurface at an even less convenient time, with FULL FORCE... In our Therapeutic Play Group Program, we support you in how to do this for yourself and your kiddies. To be a part of our Term 4 groups where you will be able to add more tools to your toolkit, contact us today!

03.01.2022 BITING Kids bite for a number of reasons! If your child is past the teething phase, a few reasons might include:... A form of communicating (especially if there is a language delay) Oral-sensory seeking: your child might benefit from some oral stimulation. E.g. sensory necklaces/bracelets, crunchy/chewy snacks in their lunchboxes, blowing a (silent) whistle Agitation / frustration / anxiousness: what is the trigger? All we need to do is decode the mystery and problem-solve from there!

02.01.2022 A U T H E N T I C I T Y & A T T U N E M E N T One of our favourite quotes that we live by! This weeks online groups will be covering Authenticity & Attunement: What, How, Why.... For now, we will leave you with these questions to ponder on: What do you hide from people? What do you hide from your kids? What do you pretend? We will address why this is important in our groups, and how this impacts those around us, including our kids. To be a part of our Term 4 groups where you will learn about topics such as these, contact us today!

01.01.2022 BED-WETTING Is your child suddenly wetting the bed? Or maybe they seem to be taking two steps forward, one step back?... There are many reasons that bed-wetting occurs, and each factor needs to be addressed and ruled out by your GP, or relevant health professional HOWEVER, one factor that can be addressed through Play Therapy is emotional disturbances/anxiety/mental health. Sometimes we see a regression in toileting for children when going through changes or stressful times. As adults, the triggers are not always obvious, but in the mind of a child, these triggers are overwhelming and all-consuming In our Therapeutic Play Groups, we deepen caregivers knowledge of how to help their children through those bumps in the road To find out more, connect with us today!
