16.01.2022 Hi everyone! If you’ve been wondering what’s happening with Family History Down Under 2021, we’re here to reassure you. We apologise for the lack of updates recently, I’m sure you’ll understand with the complexities of COVID-19 there has been a lot to work through. But rest assured, in this time of uncertainty, we’re committing to holding a real, live, in-person genealogy event in March of 2021.... Despite the challenges, we’re doing our best to bring you this exciting opportunity to get out on the Sunshine Coast, hear from some of the best experts around, and have a great time interacting with other genealogists. Please understand that we will be doing everything in our power to ensure you are safe and informed. Speaking of updates, we have a couple of important things for you to be aware of: Firstly, the impact of COVID-19 has required us to change venues, but we’ve managed to secure another fantastic location for FHDU 2021 only a few minutes drive away. The new venue is the Maroochy RSL, which though different, still has fantastic facilities and a variety of great dining options. Secondly, the current rules give us a limit of 170 bookings, at this point in time. Next week, we will be back with more information on: - the new venue - accommodation options - the program It’s very important to us that you know exactly what is going on. We will be releasing information to you as soon as we are able to. By the way, if you’re not already aware, our cancellation policy enables you to book without any risk. Thank you for your patience and understanding! Stay safe out there. PS - The website will be updated early next week with all the latest information.

14.01.2022 National Family History Month (NFHM) is celebrated every August in Australia and in New Zealand. We are finding many organisations are reluctant (or unable) to ...hold physical meetings just yet, especially in parts of Australia, but we hope circumstances improve quickly. It is not too late to plan and advertise events, especially on-line events. If you have an ordinary meeting or event planned in August, why not promote it as happening in Family History Month, and add it to our list of events on our website (https://familyhistorymonth.org.au/events/). If you need help, contact our webmaster via the website contact form. We currently have more than 20 events listed, but would like lots more. We have some competitions and prizes during August, so look for details on our website, and we will post more info here before the start of August. We have listed an Opening Event on 1 August, and a Closing Event on 31 August. These will be by Zoom, and you must book. The details are on the website, and include a short lecture on a major Irish Event in 1916, and a lecture on ways to track down an elusive ancestor. Places are limited, and you will need to book your place. If you have never attended an on-line lecture before, this is a great opportunity. You just need an Email address and a computer/laptop/small screen device with a web browser. We will make it easy! Our webmaster is always willing to provide any help needed (I do sleep sometimes though).

12.01.2022 more history being demolished

11.01.2022 one more week of National Family History Month to go!!

11.01.2022 This month, as we head into spring and get more out and about after weeks of lock-down, we’re celebrating community - the communities who have kept us strong, w...ho care for our collective memories, stories and objects. Did you know there are over 300 community museums and history groups in South Australia doing just that? The majority are listed on our Explore History website https://explore.history.sa.gov.au/ and we’ll highlight a few over the coming weeks. Many are now open for visitors although do check beforehand as opening hours may be effected by COVID19 restrictions. First up if you’re heading to the Clare Valley tomorrow (promising to be a sunny day - a trip out for Fathers’ Day?) - why not pop into the Polish Hill River Church Museum at Sevenhill. They’re open on the first Sunday of the month so this is your chance to discover more about Polish settlement in South Australia - the Polish pioneer settlers of the 19th century, the post-World War 2 migration and the solidarity migration throughout the 1980s. You will find the museum nestled amongst trees and vineyards in the little church of St Stanislaus Kostka, built in 1871 (the first Polish Church in Australia), and its adjacent schoolroom. The building was restored by the Polish community of South Australia in the 1970s and the museum was set up by the Polish Pioneer Descendants Group. The Polish community continues to support and develop the displays. More recently they have beautified the grounds with commemorative trees and artwork to celebrate those families who have contributed to the museum. 10.01.2022 Big news from RootsTech, on 2021

08.01.2022 With current Queensland Government restrictions on venue capacities, FHDU 2021 is now booked out. But ... we hope the government eases limits in the coming months, in line with some other states. If/when that happens, those on the waitlist will be given the first opportunity to book. Click this link to join the waitlist. https://www.familyhistorydownunder.com/2021/home

08.01.2022 Louise Coakley is one the presenters who makes up a strong team of speakers who'll be talking on the topic of DNA. We are very excited to have her back for FHDU 2021. As one of Australia's leading genetic genealogists, Louise uses her skills to help people use and interpret their DNA results, not to menion finding other relatives as well. At FHDU 2021 she'll be running a hands-on workshop for those interested in getting started in DNA for those interested in adoptees and unknown parentage, as well as giving several other presentations. #FHDU2021 #FHDU #genealogy

07.01.2022 The South Australian Government is pushing ahead with the demolition of the heritage-listed Victor Harbor causeway, despite the same engineering firm that in 2019 recommended its replacement outlining in 2010 how it could be preserved. What do you think?

06.01.2022 I know we’ve been a little quiet recently, but trust me we’re working hard to bring you not 1, but now 2 awesome conferences. As you’re no doubt aware, our original Family History Down Under conference which was going to be on in March 2021, in Queensland, has now been deferred to due to Covid. This has now been renamed to Family History Down Under 2022, but instead we are organising a new event Family History Down Under 2021. So today’s exciting news is that we can confirm ...that the dates and venue for the new FHDU event in 2021, are the same Sunshine Coast Convention Centre, 22-26 March 2021. Now we are working on an exciting program and speaker line up for this new 2021 event. And don’t worry we’re working madly to confirm the details for FHDU 2022 as soon as we can as well. FHDU 2021 will be comparable to the original event, and an updated website with more details of both FHDU events, is coming soon. **BOOKINGS FOR FHDU 2021 WILL OPEN IN 1-2 MONTHS ***

06.01.2022 The (new) Academy of Genealogy in the Netherlands invites genealogists from all over the world to submit a proposal for a webinar. We welcome proposals for pres...entations that explain genealogists in the Netherlands how to conduct research abroad. We prefer research in countries with (strong) ties to the Netherlands, but presentations about other countries are also very welcome. We expect you to give a presentation of about 45 minutes (in the English language) and then be available for a Q&A session of about 15 minutes. We do not require an extensive handout, but we appreciate an overview of, for example, the most important websites. We offer the webinars for a fee and post them on our website afterwards, so that interested parties can also view the webinars later via pay-per-view. In exchange for the presentation, we offer you a compensation of 150 euros. Of course we promote your presentation via our website and our social media. A brief description of who you are and what genealogical services you offer is helpful. If you have any questions or if you want to submit a proposal, please contact [email protected]. See more
