22.01.2022 Leonard Victor Sales 1923-2020 Len Sales was a loved and well respected member of the Australian aviation community, whose experience in and contribution to aviation spanned eight decades. Following his retirement in 1981, Len went on to gain teaching qualifications. He was the doyen of instructors of ATPL subjects and many of his students will remember him for demanding that answers come within 10 cuscooshkas. He remained an active pilot for many years as a co-pilot on the DC-3 for Rebel Air and on a Cessna Citation for UNSW. His daughter commented that he had great passion for education and pilots were the recipient of that enthusiasm. A generation of pilots owe him a great deal. He had a wonderful career and we mourn the passing of one who contributed as much as they gained from the profession.

21.01.2022 WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the following contains images of deceased persons. This #NAIDOCWeek, UNSW Aviation celebrates Len Waters, the first Indigenous Australian military aviator. Born in 1924 on the Euraba Aboriginal Mission in NSW, Len grew up in an era when the skies were still beginning to be explored. Waters began his time with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1942 as an aircraft mechanic with dreams of becoming a pi...lot. He was lucky enough to be selected for an internal training program and graduated as a pilot in 1944. Waters was later posted to No. 78 Squadron stationed on an island off Dutch New Guinea. He flew on more than 90 missions throughout the war. On one of his flights, the aircraft was struck by a 37-millimetre cannon shell, which (luckily) wedged itself in the cockpit without detonating. Waters flew for another 2 hours before landing safely with the shell still intact! Len Waters was discharged from the RAAF as a Warrant Officer at the end of the war. : https://www.awm.gov.au//memorial/3/online-resources/waters
