25.01.2022 Next up on the list of awesome committee members I'd love to introduce we have our Vice President! Name: Liam Blake Degree: B. Maths Sciences (Advanced) Year Level: 3... Bio: Writing a bio is hard. What do I tell everyone about? It would be rather predictable if I, as a maths student on the AUMS committee, were to talk about how much I like maths. I do quite like maths, but surely there is something better to say. I could talk about how I follow way too much cricket and am a walking encyclopedia of cricket facts you never wanted nor needed to know. Perhaps my bass playing is worth a mention, but I'm not very good at that. Doesn't stop me trying at least, but not exactly bio-worthy material. My three cats offer enough drama for a short novel, but still that's not what I'm after. Well, at this point I've reached the length of what constitutes a reasonable social media bio, so I guess this will do? See more

22.01.2022 Continuing with our introduction to the AUMS committee, I'd love to introduce our kind and awesome first year rep! Name: Kaitie Atkins Degree: B. Maths Sciences (Advanced) Year Level: 1... Bio: The best thing about getting to know me is that I love baking, but what I love even more is forcing people to eat the food that I have cooked. Cupcakes are my favourite to make, but I do make a pretty mean double chocolate chip cookie as well. I also enjoy reading, know how to play an absurd amount of card games and I have the best dog in the world who I am more than willing to show everyone photos of. See more

19.01.2022 After so long away from campus it's almost hard to remember who's who! Fortunately AUMS has got you covered and we're proud to be presenting the AUMS Committee - the people who make AUMS tick. To set the scene we'll be starting with the person behind all of these posts... Name: Isabelle Greco Degree: B. Maths Sciences (Advanced) with Dip. Languages (French) Year Level: 3... Bio: I have read the Harry Potter books 8 times (yes, all of them 8 times except the Order of the Phoenix which I have only read 7.5 times because I just didn't want to read about Umbridge catching Harry in the Room of Requirement and so I got to that bit and couldn't bring myself to finish the book). I can also sing (with varying degrees of skill) the entirety of A Very Potter Musical WHICH YOU SHOULD TOTALLY SEE IF YOU HAVE NOT IT IS AN IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE. See more

02.01.2022 With an AUMS talk coming up this Friday, we'd love to introduce you to a past AUMS President, awesome AUMS talk presenter, and current general committee member! Name: Tobin South Degree: M. Phil. in Statistics and Applied Maths Year Level: 2? 5? >9000?... Bio: Not to be controversial, but I think making bread and data science are pretty similar. Everyone can bake a loaf of bread, but not everyone chooses too. Not only is bread fun to bake, but at the end of it, you have this beautiful creation at the end. Show your friends your amazing plots and models, make them eat it. Put some butter on those logistic regressions while they're still warm. Just like a good dough takes love and time to rise, your statistics can be slow. It takes love. You have to learn the right skills, know the right commands and preheat your oven. Deeply understanding the maths behind the bread not only makes you appreciate it more, it sets you up to solve bread problems that no one else has thought of. Whether you're cooking with R or Python or MATLAB, it doesn't matter, it's about the idea. We all need nourishment. Some people prefer to buy their bread and some people like to eat other foods, but you have a chance to create something of your own. Feed your curiosity, learn, create, bake and have fun. Go make some bread; do statistics. Contact Tobin for a Sourdough starter or Python installation instructions.
01.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone! Time to meet another kind and awesome member of the committee! Name: Siobhan Doran Degree: B. Maths Sciences (Advanced) Year Level: 2... Bio: Ahh maths for me was like that blink 182 phase I had at the start of highschool - embarrassing to admit I liked it but my desire for more never really went away. Luckily enough, you’ll see a few more maths enthusiasts around at university. For instance, you can catch me at uni doing some maths with a cup of tea, pencil, calculator and a small cockatiel on my shoulder. Yes, I really do that. Many courses don’t require calculators but it’s my personal preference. Wait a second, were you surprised that my pet bird, Walter, is always with me? Oh boy. Well, it all started when I got this cute little bird-transport backpack and then it just escalated into him coming on hikes, holidays, beach trips until one day I mistook the bird backpack for my uni backpack. Some recall that day differently but I remember him solving previously unsolvable integrals, winning a field’s medal and solving a millennial problem. So be like Walter. Afraid, at first, to go into the backpack because it's big and scary but then muster up the courage to do so because once you're inside, you’ll realise it's decked out with your favourite seed, mirrors and perches. AUMS is the backpack. We're here to make you feel at home in the maths world. Come say hi!! See more
