24.01.2022 Today we'll be hearing from both our Vice President and General Committee Member, to hear what their role is all about, and why they love it. If you're interested in joining our 2021 committee, please email us at [email protected] George Curan, General Committee Member Do you want to take on a more active role in the quidditch club? Not sure how to begin? Maybe give the position of General Committee Member a try. The role of the general committee member is simple, aid t...he rest of the committee as needed, and act as deputy to all the other positions save for President. This role can help you get to know the internal functions of the committee, and set you up for another role later on. Olivia Brooks, Vice President The Vice President is the president’s sidekick - someone who is ready to helping out in all areas of the club and take the lead when required. This role suits someone who has good people skills, excellent leadership ability, and is a positive role model for the club. What I’ve loved the most during my term as Vice President has been working closely with the committee and being up close to all the action. It’s a very rewarding position and I highly recommend applying! Tune in next week to hear from our 2020 President, Media Officer, and Treasurer!
21.01.2022 The Push-Up Challenge is upon us again! Raising funds and awareness for Mental Health, challenge yourself to 3,318 push-ups over 25 days in June, or aim for 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of the push-up target. You can spread them out across the day. Alternatives such as sit-ups, squats or tailored exercises are also welcome! Last year we participated in groups but with the new tailored goals and feedback regarding how the system worked for groups, we thought it would be better to reg...ister as a Solo participant with a scaled target depending on your fitness level and just encourage each other to complete your goals! All participants will receive points towards the house cup for their house! Register here! https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/
21.01.2022 After a frenetic year in 2014, as we rebuilt rapidly into one of the nation’s greatest forces, QUAFL was a major disappointment. Though there were losses into 2015 such as James Mortensen to ANU, the new year represented great stability and continuity. From this already strong dedicated base, we pushed hard for a huge O-week which brought over a dozen additions. These included George Curan, Emma Kendrick, and the return of James Hosford. A big achievement for the club in 201...5 was upgrading our relationship with UoN from a social club, to a bonafide sporting club with NUsport. The team leadership for 2015 saw Russell supported by assistant coach Owen Sherwood and captains Vera Dawson and Holly Cairncross. This quartet provided a perfect balance of quality coaching, leadership, hype and atmosphere, and took a talented team into an elite unit. 2015’s Midwinter Cup was the biggest yet, featuring 9 teams and the first full 2 day tournament with everyone playing 8 matches in a full round robin. The Fireballs emerged as the favourite after decisively beating all comers. And with UWS understandably forfeiting the final, Newcastle were Midwinter champions, securing our first major championship. QUAFL 2015 left NSW for the first time, hosted in Melbourne at Monash University. Queensland’s presence grew, South Australians attended for the first time, resulting in the attendance of 19 teams. Ryan Hanwright led the way against the Manticores in our first game as we took them to overtime, but were unable to keep them out or catch the snitch in the extra five minutes. The remainder of our QUAFL saw the Fireballs overcoming fatigue to sweep all comers aside with five straight to reach a semi-final rematch against the Manticores. In one of the greatest and most intense matches, we could never quite keep up but fought hard getting back into range by the snitch release. The Manticores had too much firepower and went on to beat UNSW in the final.
20.01.2022 Our AGM is on its way! Among other things, the AGM is where we vote in the committee for the next year. Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be seeing what our current committee love about their job and what kind work each committee member does, which should help anyone who was considered applying! Today we'll hear from our current secretary and recruitment officer about their jobs in the committee. Charlie Sims, Secretary: Being Secretary mostly means doing all the important ...writing for the club committee! My favourite part is writing the minutes, because you get to feel like the most important person in the room during a meeting. I think Secretary is a great position for someone who’d like to be in the committee but might not feel confident, because it’s roll with very specific tasks. It’s great being a part of the club committee because everyone in it has valuable input that’s equal (the President has a specific role in the committee but they’re not the boss). I’ve enjoyed working with the rest of the committee and feeling supported by them. Donovan Lee, Recruitment Officer: If you are generally friendly, easy to approach and love talking to people, this is the job for you! With the name, the role involves recruitment but that also means engaging and ensuring those that have joined the club WANT to stay in the club. People skills recommended, but your passion will win the hearts of many so don’t worry! It’s been rewarding working closely with the committee and having a pretty good year despite all of the challenges we’ve faced so far!
18.01.2022 UNQC just completed Headspace’s Push-Up Challenge! After 21 days of pushuping, we have done a total of 6,092 push-ups! The Push-Up Challenge is to raise money and awareness for mental health, by supporting Headspace’s programs. We’ve split the Newcastle Fireballs into teams of Chasers and Beaters, each team doing 3,046 push-ups - one push-up for every life lost to suicide in 2018. We would love it if you’d help UNQC #pushforbetter mental health by donating. You can donate to ...the Chasers and/or Beaters teams (whichever is your favourite position). UNQC has donated $10 on behalf of each of our pushuperers to support their efforts. To support the Chasers: www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/team/15881-unqc-chasers To support the Beaters: www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/team/15831-unqc-beaters Awesome work team!
18.01.2022 Now it's time to hear from our President and Media Officer about their committee roles! Phoebe Hollott, President Even though the president is an important role, they are never alone, everything they do is with the committee. As a president you will ensure everyone’s voice is heard and make executive decisions when necessary. Some things you will get to do is delegate tasks, keep track of club events, and make sure everything is completed in time. But through all your hard w...ork, it is so exciting to see everyone’s love for the club and each other grow. This is the kind of job for someone who cares a lot about the club and wants to carry on the legacy of previous presidents, to see the club reach new heights and become a home for new members. Raelene Cherry, Media Officer Being the media officer isn’t all memes and quidposting. It takes a lot of organization, a good eye for design and of course, communication to be an efficient media officer. That however, doesn’t mean you have to have a lot of design knowledge to start. This role is suited to anyone who’s willing to listen to feedback, since this role is so heavily rooted in creating content that appeals to others. I myself came from an animation background and had to adapt a lot of my knowledge so it was suitable for this role and the biggest asset that I carried with me was the ability to receive and implement feedback, and it was really rewarding to create graphics and other content that everyone was happy with. What I love about this role so much is that I have the chance to show everyone the club from my view, and show everyone that I think the club is a fantastic, accepting group that is equal parts fun and challenging. I recommend applying if you have an interest in graphic design or just want to show everyone how awesome you think the club is.
18.01.2022 UNQC loves to take part in challenges! This year we have already completed 20,995 squats for #NeverEaseUp, and 6,092 push-ups for The Push-Up Challenge. This time we will be accumulating as many steps as we can, by taking part in the Australasian University Health Challenge, where we will be competing with UoN against other 14 universities. The challenge aims to encourage small behavioural changes, through some friendly international competition. It will go for 6 weeks, fro...m the 31st of August to the 11th of October. You don’t need to be a UNQC member of UoN student to join in, the more people the better! Our club has a team within UoN, so we will all be working together. In order to sign up: 1. Head to https://www.10000steps.org.au/health-challenges/2020-auhc/ 2. Scroll and click on the UON ‘Join Challenge Team’ tile 3. Register as per instructions Let Phoebe know when you’ve done the above (including the email you used to register), and she can add you to the UON Quidditch team. You’ll need a way to measure steps, such as a fitbit/garmin or pedometer. If you have any questions, feel free to message Phoebe or the club page. See more

14.01.2022 Our trivia is happening this Saturday! I won’t give away too much, but there’s at least four questions about dinosaurs and a bunch about Quidditch! Even if you don’t get any right (and there’s a good mix so I’m sure you will) it’ll be a fun hang out with friends and some of that good team work stuff we’ve all been missing!
14.01.2022 30 years ago today, the WHO removed homosexuality from it's classification of diseases and health related problems, making today the 30th year of the Internatio...nal Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia! Quidditch is proud to call itself a sport for everyone - where people, no matter their sexual orientation or gender can be themselves, can find community, and can belong. Quidditch Australia will always strive to improve the accessibility of sport for people who often struggle to find a place in other sports. We love that ours is a community where people can be open about who they are and whom they love, and find kinship with others like them, and we will continue to do our best in standing up for all of our players against homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia, to provide a space where everyone can feel welcome. 13.01.2022 One day left of the push-up challenge!
13.01.2022 We have reached the last of our committee features! This time we're hearing from our treasurer. Clarine Cherry, Treasurer If you like keeping those receipts straight and chasing people like Rihanna in that music video were Hannibal owed her money, then you should think about applying for Treasurer. Even though this year was pretty lax, there was still housekeeping to do in terms of invoices and writing financial reports. Being treasurer expands upon money management skills t...hat are applicable in everyday life, and I like that it gave me the opportunity to learn these essential skills and use them to benefit my fellow club members. Thank you everyone for having reading our last few posts and taking the chance to learn about the different committee roles we have available. See you at our AGM on Saturday at 10 am!
