25.01.2022 There's a MMMB seminar next week by Prof. Chris Berndt, who works on surface engineering for advanced materials at Swinburne University, 11:30-12:30 on Tuesday ...22nd October. The topic is "Compositions and Mechanical Properties of Baghdadite and Hydroxyapatite Coatings Manufactured by Atmospheric Plasma Spraying". There'll be a free lunch too, so feel free to go along if you're interested. The description is as follows: Baghdadite (Ca3ZrSi2O9) (BAG) is a calcium silicate (Ca-Si) based ceramic with osteostimulatory function, biocompatibility and chemical stability. BAG, in its bulk form, can promote adhesion, growth and osteogenic differentiation of stem cells; hence enhancing the proliferation of human osteoblasts (HOBs) as well as promote the activity of osteoclasts. BAG exhibits a high compressive strength, bending strength, hardness and fracture toughness that can be a potential candidate for applications of orthopaedic implants. This work studies atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) BAG coatings and evaluates their hardness and moduli against APS hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings. Surface roughness of BAG is more consistent with less variation than the roughness of HAp coating. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) technique presents features, which less varied in values and sizes in BAG coating than that of HAp coating. The presence of zirconium in BAG increased the microhardness, as well as the hardness and elastic moduli derived from nanoindentation measurements, when contrasted with the equivalent properties of HAp coatings.

18.01.2022 Do you want to hug a robot? UOW Materials and METSOC recently hosted a TechTalk featuring Charbel Tawk from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterial Science at the University of Wollongong. Charbel presented his research on recent innovations in soft robotics and the development of 3D printable soft actuators and sensors. His bioinspired 3D printable soft vacuum actuators can be used for locomotion robots, grippers and artificial muscles. #uowmaterials #ACES #3dprinting #softrobotics #bioinspired
