01.01.2022 VALE JACK VAN DAMME Red Lions Coach 1983-1985 The charismatic Jack Van Damme strode with purpose into the Red Lions as coach of the A grade in 1983. He inherited a team which had a lot of potential, with a number of very handy additions from the previous year (Harry Dunstall, Graham Sullivan, Brendan Vaughan, Gary Cranitch and Russell Renhard to name a few). Before starting as coach hed asked around and found out the team was skilled but had a reputation as handbag carrier...s and bookworms- a reputation he was keen to reverse, quickly. In his first game as coach, the team were leading by 10 goals at 3 quarter time playing Moorooka on some cow paddock south of Brisbane, with boots optional for some of our opponents, and Jacks 3 quarter time address was : Theyre going to start a fight, and were gonna finish it!!! Red Lions did finish the fight that day by winning the match and cementing themselves as a team who meant business that year. He wasnt going to tolerate a lack of effort, either. One famous day at Springwood, the Red Lions were down by 5 goals at half time and Jack was furious. He insisted the entire team strip off their guernseys, then he jumped up and down on them because thats what Springwood are doing, theyre walking all over you (the rest of that half time address wont be published here). The Red Lions turned the game around and won by 5 goals. In 1983 Jacks team were unlucky to lose a close preliminary final, but in 1984 they went one better. Up against Everton Park in the Grand Final, two goals up at half time, Jack revved the team up like never before. The Red Lions went on to win the 1984 Grand Final by 100 points and remains the Clubs most recent A grade premiership. Jacks health deteriorated in the last 10 years, but he was excited to attend the wonderful event in 2014 organised by the club to celebrate 30 years from that premiership, and to meet up with most of the 1984 team again that night. His health prevented him from speaking publicly at the event (uncharacteristic for Jack), but he described that night as one of the best hed ever had with one last rendition of the club song. Jack was charismatic, no nonsense, capable, intelligent, caring and loving (under a sometimes gruff facade that everyone could see through), a very good center half forward in his playing days, and a keen golfer, who in his later years lamented that he couldnt hit his golf ball out of his own shadow. But then, he did have a huge personality and cast a very big shadow. Jack died peacefully at home on the 6th April 2020 aged 76 and will be sadly missed by all who knew him at the Red Lions. Vale Jack- you kicked a lot of goals in life. (Jacks family are holding a private funeral on Thursday 16th April in Bundaberg, where he lived the last years of his life. Given the current COVID -19 restrictions, only family can be in attendance).
