13.01.2022 In yet another highlight of her research carrier, Carmen Gorska presented her research on self-extinguishing timber buildings at the popular and insightful TED Talks. At the TEDxUQ sessions that took place on Saturday 10th of August 2019, Carmen took the main stage to bring such a highly technical and challenging subject to a massive audience. Recently having finished her work at UQ Fire, Carmen has moved on to a new professional challenge in London. [ 42 more words ] http://uqfire-news.org/2020/04/15/carmen-tedxuq/

12.01.2022 Each year, the UMD Department of Fire Protection Engineering supported by NIST hosts its Annual Christmas Tree Fire Safety Demonstration. The demo consists of a series of live-fire experiments on both natural and artificial Christmas trees to show the burning behaviour (size, intensity, and growth rate) of typical Christmas tree fires. These experiments demonstrate the impact of moisture content on ignition, fire growth rate and peak burning behaviour proof that it is vital to maintain well-hydrated trees. 10.01.2022 Dr Cristian Maluk was invited to speak at a seminar organised by the Concrete Institute of Australia; with a presentation entitled "Fire-Induced Concrete Spalling The End of the Beginning". The presentation covered the state of the art in our understanding of fire-induced concrete spalling. While it is widely accepted that certain types of modern concretes and certain concrete structures applications have a higher propensity for spalling; we are just beginning to grapple with the consequences of concrete spalling during or even after a fire.
