24.01.2022 Children thrive when parents have the support they need. This week is National Child Protection Week. You can find out more at: https://www.napcan.org.au/ncpw-get-involved/
22.01.2022 Last week we acknowledged Australia Day. We spent the entire week reflecting on what this day means for us and for other Australians. This year the National Australia Day Council asked all Australians to stop and acknowledge every Australian and to recognise that each of us have our own story of what it means to be Australian. This year we used the language of written and oral stories to talk and reflect about Australia. We heard some of the Aboriginal Dreaming stories th...at tell us about the Aboriginal understanding of the origins on many plants and animals. We also heard stories about different people in Australia like farmers and people who live in cities and people who have travelled from different places and have chosen to call Australia their home. We also and thought about our own stories, and how, even though we are all different, we are all Australian. We would love it if you could share a snippet or memory of your families story with us and we will create a collage of the stories that make up our little part of Australia. Have a look at our Map Wall to see some of the stories we have already collected!
22.01.2022 Recently we have been reflecting on our menus so that we can provide meals that are delicious, nutritious and interesting for our children. Using tools like the Nutrition Checklist for Menu Planning and the Menu Planning Guidelines for Long Day Care from the Healthy Eating Advisory Service, alongside the reflections and feedback of the children and educators we have added a range of new foods alongside some long term favourites. We began the day with a group of children work...ing in the kitchen to help prepare our cheese and vegemite pinwheels for afternoon tea. The children were responsible for spreading the vegemite onto the pastry and then making sure that the cheese was evenly sprinkled across the pastry. We then rolled them up before we worked together to cut the long rolls into small pieces. They smelt amazing while they were cooking and taste even better! We also introduced Lamb Koftas with Turkish Rice and vegetables for lunch. Demonstrating their resilience, everyone was happy to try these new foods, with many conversations overheard in the dining room about the new foods and flavours. Some children really loved the lamb and others the rice. We are all looking forward to discovering new flavours together over the next few weeks!
20.01.2022 We were excited to host an Easter Afternoon tea for our community. We love being able to come together as a community, and this celebration was extra special as it was our first chance to come together like this since March last year. It was so fantastic to see so many families come and enjoy the beautiful Autumn afternoon in our gorgeous outdoor spaces. Thankyou to all the families who were able to attend for making it such a lovely afternoon spending quality time together!
20.01.2022 Our Fairy-story project continues!: Over the past month the Walgas have been very busy putting together the Wicked Fairy costume for the play. To create the costume the Walgas have used a story boarding concept to share and make decisions about their design. Some of the shared decision making has included selecting specific design elements, choosing the colours to represent the Wicked Fairy, and selecting the fabric. Together they have created a t-shirt stencil, cut out the fabric, put together a sewing machine and begun sewing. Our first sewing attempt was not successful, but we got to explore the un-picker and what that does before coming back and trying a different strategy. So far, we have successfully created the top part of the costume and are now armed with the knowledge to create a beautiful rainbow ballgown skirt.
19.01.2022 Talking with your child about biting, and how it makes the other child feel when they are hurt, is a great start to helping children to understand that 'biting' - whilst common, is not an ideal behaviour!. This great Starting Blocks article provides insights into why a child might bite, how our educators respond to biting incidents, and what you can do to help. https://bit.ly/3l0Hvtj
18.01.2022 Our Princess Story project has finished, ending with a few movies created starring our amazing Willes and Walgas! With the costumes and props finally completed we set out to have dress rehearsals before filming the play to share with our families. Bec took the video pieces home and edited them together. With the first movie completed we were able to sit down and watch it as a group. Once the children got to see themselves on the big screen it gave them all a newfound confiden...ce and all of a sudden we had many gallant knights, wicked fairies and princesses ready to perform. We will be reaching out to all our families soon to make sure that everyone gets a copy of the princess story. A teacher who is sometimes the director, sometimes the set designer, sometimes the curtain and the backdrop, and sometimes the prompter. who is even the audience the audience who watches, who sometimes claps, sometimes remains silent, full s of emotionand other times claps with enthusiasm (Malaguzzi, 1993, cited in Rinaldi, 2001, p.89)
18.01.2022 Physical movement is a very important part of children's development. In the movement atelier the educators have created a positive climbing environment for the Bimbi children to explore physical activity. The Bimbi children love exploring climbing and love that they get to see the room from different perspectives. If children are wishing to climb, we are encouraging them to explore it in a safe environment where educators can support the children. By supporting safe climbing we are encouraging trust, balance, coordination, and risky play. For more information please visit https://www.health.act.gov.au//healt/kids-play-active-play
16.01.2022 Our Bimbi children are involved in different kinds of play and interaction every day! One specific kind of play that we support and encourage is called Active Play. Active play includes any activity that involves moderate to vigorous bursts of high energy. Put simply, if it raises their heart rate and makes them move - or "huff and puff", it’s active play. For babies, active play is less intense than it is for our older children. It includes activities such as reaching out to touch something, rolling over or balancing in a sitting position. Babies and children should enjoy active play every single day. Engaging in daily active play will help your kids form lifelong habits of daily physical activity. To find out more information visit- https://www.health.act.gov.au//healt/kids-play-active-play
15.01.2022 Drawing inspiration from the Reggio Emilia Educational Project, we see all children as possessing amazing potential and a curiosity and drive to understand their world and those that they share it with. We see all our children as respected and valued members of our community who have a connection and responsibility to their peers. This is evident in all our age groups and recently in our Bimbi room, our youngest children have been demonstrating great care and respect for each... other. Our older babies have been responding to the cues of our youngest babies, demonstrating their connection to each other. The children have been showing how they can use their gentle hands when giving hugs and let the educators know if someone seems upset. They are often showing their interest and concern when the younger children are sitting on the floor and when they are having a bottle. We have introduced a bassinet into the room so that our younger babies have somewhere they could lay down by themselves. The children have been showing great interest when the younger children are in the bassinet. They enjoy taking turns saying hello and having a little chat while the younger children are in the bassinet. This is also a safe way for our younger children to have some quiet time and space while they can be in the room and still interact with others.
15.01.2022 Final day to confirm 201819 income! Today (Wednesday, 31 March) is the final day for you to confirm their 201819 income with Services Australia. Families who haven’t confirmed their 201819 income will lose their Child Care Subsidy (CCS) from 5 April. If families confirm their income after 5 April, Services Australia can start their CCS again. Payments will restart the following CCS Monday, after their income is confirmed. If there was a gap between their CCS stopping and t...his date, they won’t get CCS for that time. To confirm their 201819 income for the purposes of balancing, families need to: lodge their tax return, or tell Services Australia they don’t need to lodge a tax return. Families can do this using their Centrelink online account through myGov or the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app. If you have any questions, please go to the Services Australia website.
15.01.2022 Today is Early Childhood Educators’ Day. A big thank you to our educators for all their hard work to provide quality education care to children - especially during such tough times.
12.01.2022 This morning we welcomed Sandra Bennet, a local author into our centre to read her book Emma the Eager Emu. Emma the Emu goes to flying school with her other Australian bird friends, but soon discoveries that she is not like them. Emma the Eager Emu is a beautiful story about learning to accept and celebrate our differences! The children really enjoyed listening to the story and having a chance to meet a real author. The children also enjoyed exploring the story through the... language of movement as they experimented with the different ways that Emma, and her friends, moved. Families of Urambi ELC can purchase the book Emma the Eager Emu. Each copy of Emma the Emu that is sold will result in a small donation to our own Library. If you are interested in purchasing a copy please talk to Allysa. #CBCA2020
12.01.2022 Kevin, our photographer from Picture This Photos, has been taking our staff photo's. Here is Bella's :-) Happy Fri-yay!
11.01.2022 We were very excited this week to discover that our fabulous gardeners had planted lots of new trees and shrubs throughout our gardens. The Wille and Walga students have had lots of important conversations about how to care for the new plants, including not pulling on the leaves and making sure that they get watered regularly. With a recent interest in sustainability and caring for our planet, the children have loved being able to take responsibility for these new plants.
10.01.2022 Our community Connections program has recently inspired our Wille and Walga children to consider the question ‘What is Art’. Our interest was captured we saw the big orange sculpture as we walked within the Nature Reserve. The following week the Willes and Walgas noticed some writing on a pole as we were walking past This led to a discussion about art Were those words art? What is art? Who decides if it is art? After lots of discussion the Willes and Walgas decided this... one wasn’t art because it was writing and the person who did it, didn’t have permission to do it there. As we continued our exploration we came across some beautiful colours on the Scout Hall. Was this art? Was it special enough to be considered art? Was it allowed to be there? The Willes and the Walgas were undecided about if it was art. Some decided that because it was colourful and rainbowy that it was in fact art. Others decided they needed to know if the Scout Hall consented to the painting before they could decide if it was art. What do you think? How do you decide if something is art?
10.01.2022 Mathematical explorations The Walgas have started to seek out different ways of exploring mathematic concepts during their play. To support their growing interest into the world of mathematics we have provided the Walgas with different resources for number recognition, counting, shape recognition, and pattern and sequencing. This budding project has also been a great way to connect the Walgas into the understanding of fairness and how to ensure that everyone is getting a turn as we explore how to play games that involves numbers and counting.

09.01.2022 Inspired by National Nutrition Weeks ‘Try for 5’ campaign the children at Urambi have been focussed on learning more about the importance of making healthy choices. Children in the Bimbi room have been exploring their herb garden and tasting lots of delicious vegetables! Our Dingu children have been learning about different healthy foods through one of their favourite books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Our Wille and Walga students have been learning about how our bodies us...e the food that we eat, and why it is so important that we give our body lots of healthy fruits and vegetables. With this knowledge they have been reviewing our menus and have made some suggestions about where we can add more opportunity for vegetables. Some of their suggestions included salad with our meals, smoothies, continuing to explore vegetable muffins and fruit based ice-blocks. We are excited to explore these options further! What suggestions do you have for increasing our fruit and vegetables each day? #tryforfive See more
07.01.2022 During our explorations in the Kambah District Park the Wille and Walga children discovered some amazing fallen branches from the gum trees. After spending time exploring the branches and imagining that they were in a jungle, the children decided that they were simply too good to leave in the park; working together the children brought them back into our play space in the Nature yard. This exciting addition to our nature yard provoked lots of discussions about how we could us...e them. After much discussion and experimentation, it was decided that we would create a house with them. Working with the educators, each branch was carefully positioned and tested before adding the next. As they worked the educators talked with the children about how this might be how Aboriginal people had built their shelters. We reflected on our sessions with Larry Brandy and remembered that he had taught us that one of the words for an Aboriginal shelter was ‘gunyah’. Over the past few visit to the park the children have continued to collect branches to add to their gunyah and through their amazing imaginations it has been a cubby house, a camouflage house for koalas to keep them safe from predators, a spy house and a fabulous hiding spot! We love discovering what the children will turn this space into next. #urambielc
06.01.2022 The children while they were outside were checking the chickens and noticed that a chicken was sitting on some eggs. One of the children remarked that she was doing this to protect them from the crows and ravens that have been stealing and eating the eggs. After discussing the issue of the eggs being stolen amongst themselves. The children concluded that "We need to make a scarecrow"! When we came inside some of the Wille's drew what they wanted the scarecrow to look like. T...hey used the book ‘A Scarecrows Wedding’ as a reference for designing their scarecrows. The scarecrow needed eyes to watch out for crows, a mouth, and big sticks. Using recycled materials that the children found in the atelier they decided to make an inside scarecrow to start with. They stuffed the old clothes with shredded paper and attached them to the cardboard tubes with wool. Using an old T shirt for the head they drew on a happy face. Adding a hat on and a colourful skirt and Rosie the Scarecrow is on display ready to scare away the crows inside. We will use Rosie as inspiration for a larger scarecrow that we will place near our chicken pen to help protect our chickens and their eggs!
05.01.2022 Our Walga's love experiments. Today, they distinctly enjoyed working with Adam (directing Adam) - to test and see if our chicken's egg were fresh enough to cook with! The float test was so much fun. And the cooking that followed was also extra delicious
05.01.2022 The Wille and Walga children discovered how Thuy celebrates Vietnamese New Year - Tt Nguyên án, Spring Festival, Lunar New Year or Tet for short. Today is the eve of this festival which lasts for 7 days. Thuy came dressed in a traditional costume called Ao Dai. Thuy explained to the children how this festival is the most important one that is celebrated in Vietnam. It is like Christmas, New Years and your birthday in one special day. Thuy bought in some costumes for the chi...ldren to try on. These are worn mainly on special days and are usually worn when the family goes to temple. They celebrate this day by visiting family and friends, and family and friends visiting them Gifts of money in red envelopes (lucky money) are given to the children. The children learnt about how in our Urambi community different days are celebrated. With the children we will discover more about Tet and the Vietnamese culture. See more
05.01.2022 Our children love gardening, and they truly appreciate nature. Gardening can have a great effect on the development of various skills and the promotion of a healthy body for children of all ages - It makes sense that we tend to love getting to eat what we growand so do your children. By getting involved in gardening, children have a chance to take care of their own vegetables and fruits.
03.01.2022 Earth Day 2021 As part of our Earth day celebrations the children began sorting out all the Woolworths seeds that have been donated to us. The children sorted them into bags first, that we can recycle for other uses. To see how many of each one we have. They also made a yearly planner to work out when the seeds should be planted. As the children were doing this we discussed how planting these seed will help the bees and insects in the area find the food they need which in tu...rn helps our environment. THE GREAT GLOBAL CLEAN UP The Wille and Walga children took part in The Great Global Clean Up as part of Earth Day 2021. We registered to clean up Kambah District Park "where we walk" as on previous visits the children had seen lots of rubbish spoiling their park. Bec printed out a map of the park close to Urambi for the children to mark out where they found the rubbish, for the children to work out if there was a pattern. Using tongs (that are just used for picking up rubbish) the children started heading towards the picnic tables as that seemed to be where the rubbish was. The children found lots of party rubbish, bottle lids and straw wrappers. If they found rubbish and they didn't have tongs they called someone over to pick it up and put in the bags we brought with us. We heard lots of "I found rubbish" or "Over here is more rubbish" After an hour of collecting rubbish the children had half-filled a garbage bag of little bits. The children reflected when we came back on how finding all the rubbish in their park. I feel sad sad. When I find rubbish on my Earth it makes me sad. Really, really, really sad It makes me cranky, someone needs to pick it up Thinking about how we are looking after our planet one of the children remarked The rubbish makes me happy cause I picked it up. We encourage you to consider what your family does to look after our planet.
02.01.2022 The continuation of the Princess Story making the Princess dress! The Walgas are becoming more comfortable with the sewing machine as we move into the second costume. The children have been working on adding the dressing pins into the fabric while lining the two pieces together. Before beginning on the sewing machine, the children remind each other about the safety requirements when using it. To support each other with the process the Walgas have been using the sewing machine in pairs, one child on the pedal while the other one feeds the material through.
01.01.2022 Today is Bella’s first birthday!! The children have been planning her celebration for the last few weeks and were excited to bring all their planning together today. Working with Belinda and Karina the children made Bella a birthday cake. But because normal cakes can make dogs feel sick, this cake was made from some of Bella’s favourite foods that don’t make her sick including chicken mince, rice and blueberries! Bella got to wear her new harness which looks like a Bee and h...er special party hat. We sang Happy Birthday to Bella and spent lots of time playing with her and giving her extra special birthday cuddles!!
01.01.2022 It is early Childhood Educators Day this Wednesday. A huge thanks to all our educators at Urambi! You are amazing!
