24.01.2022 Spring is almost here - with warmer weather nearly upon us, this is a great time to deal decisively with mites. A small infestation can quickly spiral out of control once the weather warms. Controlling mites (1) maintain adequate humidity - they absolutely love dry conditions... (2) treat with a horticultural grade miticide (mites, being tiny arachnoids are impervious to other insecticides) (3) quarantine new plants (we spray all new plants coming into the nursery) (4) this one should go with saying.... but...... grow big healthy vibrant plants - water them, feed them, give them light and love them - strong plants are the best defence against bugs.....

14.01.2022 The uptake of hydro base nutrients has been amazing - if you missed out last week, we will be restocking early this coming week. In addition to base hydroponic solutions which cover all of a plants primary nutrient requirements, an amazing range of additives can be used to optimise and enhance plant health and growth rates. Navigating the full range of growth boosters and additives can be confusing and daunting, so we have put together a combination pack, with the two prima...ry additives APTUS FASilITOR & APTUS STARTBOOST that we use in all of our hydroponic systems for indoor plants. #faststrongplantgrowth https://www.urbanunderstorey.com.au/produc/aptus-startboost

07.01.2022 Tips & Tricks & the stuff that they don’t tell you about on the fancy Instagram pages.... So, you’ve seen a stunning multi planted philodendron, with three or more vines running up a totem & you’ve thought to yourself....no way I could do that without spending an absolute fortune. The truth of the matter is that those of us with way too much money can throw it away buying multiple rare plants, whilst those of us without spare cash can achieve the same outcome by using some si...mple principles of biology. Apical dominance - the leading growth point suppresses downstream nodes - this functions to allow the vine to reach up into the canopy as quickly as possible (an evolutionary adaption that allows the plant to access higher light levels in the upper canopy) If you cut back hard (really hard), you break the suppressing effect of the leader and will generally activate multiple down stream growth points Step 1 - grow a robust plant with a nice solid stem (not a spindly little stem) Step 2 - cut the top off, leaving three nodes. Step 3 - feed, keep warm & let it do it’s thing. Photo attached is a monstera standleyana - cut from 40cm of vine length back to around 4cm with three nodes. 2 weeks after cutting, all three nodes have activated. This plant will become a three vines monster If you haven’t done this before, play around with some cheap philodendrons - so, same principles as always - learn on the cheap plants & work with healthy robust plants

06.01.2022 Spring is here (finally) so the indoor display area will be back open on Saturday. Lots of large indoor plants that don’t get listed on the online shop (to large for couriers), plus a bunch of other plants. If you are looking for the really rare plants, these are only listed on the online shop, however can be collected from the nursery on Saturdays.... As we grow the majority of our own plants, the number of varieties available in the shop front will continue to grow as the warmer weather progresses. 543 John Lees Drive, Dilston Fletcher & Co Nursery Saturdays 10am - 4pm

03.01.2022 philodendron renauxii - these large paddle leaf philodendrons are becoming a big bold favourite of ours. Slow to establish motherstock, however we think they will be worth the wait ...

03.01.2022 Philodendron Golden Dragon - a big, bold philodendron. Also a great performer in cooler conditions / lower temps. These are a large climbing philodendron so we don’t sell these often (they take up a lots of glasshouse space) Excess motherstock- 1 only (last one for 2020)... https://www.urbanunderstorey.com.au//philodendron-golden-d

02.01.2022 We’re receiving lots of messages about potting mix - yes we’re happy to sell potting mix (there’s generally at least 40 cubic meters sitting in the car park) - we don’t however prebag it - so just bring along a bucket or suitable container. Price is 25c per litre

02.01.2022 Exchanging messages with someone who was worried about over watering their monstera siltepecana - these were the images we sent back to explain that overwatering is generally not an issue with these plants. Both our adansonii & siltepecana mother plants grow sitting permanently in a solid tray with 5cm of goopy sludgy water - the water is topped up however never changed, so it’s thick with gunk and bacterial life. The strands are well over 2m long and the plants are only 18 months old. This isn’t to say that all plants like it wet, however for us at least, all the monsteras except Peru & pinnatipartita like lots and lots of moisture and feed.
