20.01.2022 DETER/DEFER, DISTRACT and DEFEND As i walk down the street, I am acutely aware of the eyes on me and instinctively defensive by nature. As a woman in 2019, one has to, now more than ever, be aware of dangers lurking in all areas of our society. We are told not to show to much flesh so as not to excite men, think Islam and conservatives of other faiths, but at the same time we SHOULD be able to dress however we feel.... One of Australia's leading feminist writers Anne Sumners encapsulated this dichotomy in her dissertation: Damned Whores and God's Police way back in 1970s. The main thrust of Ms Sumners work, and that of other scholars like Germane Greer, which I studied as part of my degree from Macquarie in the 1980s, was this: Women are seen in extremes by a patriarchal, so called "civilized" society. Affirmative action is our only recourse. With the ME2 movement and the wonders of the world wide web, women can now voice their opinions more easily, and hopefully without fear of reprisal and retribution. Females of our species need to be afforded the same privileges and opportunities as men. I don't want to feel threatened, intimidated or fearful of the opposite sex, it makes me silently stressed which as you well know, can lead to all manner of ailments, particularly in the area of mental health. i see the future as female. That does not discount the contributions and the role of men, it is simply a "leg up" for women. As Ms Helen Reddy sung in the 60s: "I am woman hear me roar"!
19.01.2022 Finished rewrites of the Introduction, Water, Soil and now working on an edit of Pests. Soil Soil is the building block of gardening. It is composed of mineral particles, water, air and organic matter and made when rocks break down. In this chapter we will look at soil structure and types, pH levels (measures of acidity and alkalinity), plant nutrients, soil organisms, organic matter, mulch, green manuring and the use of cover cr...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Good morning from sunny Sydaney! Like a lot of peeps these days, I am juggling work, business and a nasty divorce. Add to that my impending foot operation and financial dramas and I've not contributed to my Useful Herb Gardening page for some time. It will go to print before this September with new writing on balcony gardening and making the most of herbs in small spaces. My current venture is Useful Vegetable Gardening which i have been working on for about 6 months.... STAY TUNED! See more
14.01.2022 My second article for Vasili's mag for Spring: Basil (Greek or Italian, Purple, Sweet, Thai) Ocymum basilium (Sweet) An annual which is part of the Menthe (mint) family, basil is tolerant of most soils. It is propagated by seed or cuttings. Basil is a handy companion plant for asparagus, beans, beets, cabbage, capsicum, chilli and bell peppers, eggplant, marigolds, oregano, potatoes and especially tomatoes. Basil enjoys added nitrogen fertiliser, eg animal-based manures and...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Just a word of warning/ suggestion: boycott Vasili's Garden to Kitchen magazine. I worked for 2 years on articles (taken from UsefulHerbGardening) with a wonderful editor Paul McFadden. I don't know if it's a Greek thing, but he didn't pay either of us and promised to publish my book which he never did. So the moral of the story is: be aware and don't give him any of ur hard-earned!
05.01.2022 W.A.L.N.U.T.S is a useful acronym for organic gardening. (amended Intro for FATY) WATER Clean water is essential to life on Earth. Australians use about 30% of household water on the garden. Organic gardening attempts to reduce water consumption by installing rainwater tanks, using grey water, adding organic matter to soil, mulching and grouping like-needs plants together in an optimum position in the garden. AIR ... Herbs, like all plants take in carbon dioxide and through photosynthesis convert it to oxygen. Plants are 50% air and a healthy soil is made up of 25% air. Herbs should be planted in a way that allows for circulation and air movement. LIGHT Herbs need 5-6 hours of good hot sun each day. Photosynthesis means to make with light. Sunlight helps herbs produce oils that give them their unique aromas and flavours. NIROGEN Organic gardeners need to provide enough nitrogen (N) for crops to maintain good yields, product quality and profitability. Legume cover crops, or green manures, can be an excellent source of N when grown in a crop rotation system. Manures (especially poultry) and compost release nitrogen in varying amounts. USABLE MICROBES Bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes and micro-arthropods (tiny insects) are organisms that are responsible for performing vital functions in the soil. Microbes feed on organic material and break it down into simpler, more stable compounds. TEMPERATURE Australia can be divided in to 5 climate zones: tropical, sub-tropical, warm temperate, cold temperate and arid/semi-arid. Soil temperature should be between 10 and 35 degrees Celsius. In temperate zones like Sydney you can plant from late winter to late autumn. SOIL In organic gardening a healthy soil is a complex web of life teeming with beneficial fungi and bacteria and earthworms. Soil types include clay and sandy and pH is a measure of acidity and alkalinity of soil. Organic material in soils consists of the living, the recently dead and the very dead and increases soil fertility, binds soil particles together, acts as a sponge retaining moisture and provides food for living organisms.
