25.01.2022 The Sydney Championships are underway, who will hold the 2020 Sydney Cup, pictured here with the medallions for the Age champions and the $1000 worth of voucher...s generously donated by Adreno Sydney. Originally called the Port Jackson Championships, and run out of Sydney Harbour, a move to Kurnell and then Port Hacking this Sydney Cup dates back to 1974 where T.Meritua of St George Dragons Spearfishing Club was the Champion. Other great Spearfishers have won the event. Multi Australian Spearfishing champions Ian Puckeridge of the Dolphins and Andy Ruddock from the South Coast Barracudas; Mark Colys and Gunther Pfrengle of the Dragons; Revesby Workers Rwc Buckley; Dolphins Mick Martin, Andrew Turvey and Derrick Cruz, Whalers Steve Wayne and Matty Poulton; Jack Howard from the North Shore Underwater Club and Newcastle Neptunes great, Aaron Carey. Thanks again to Adreno for their continued support of the Underwater Skindivers and Fishermans Association.
25.01.2022 Claytons Cup Species: 1 Goatfish Black-Spot Parupeneus spilurus Black-spot goatfish are named after the large black spot at the rear of the body behind the dorsal fin, often preceded by a bright yellow patch just in front of the black spot. They are a white to dull red colour with numerous broad dark stripes along the length of the elongate body. Adults develop small blue spots and a blue tinge to the fins. Goaties have a pair of yellow barbels located under the chin. Hig...hly sensitive, these barbels are used to probe the sediment in search for prey, such as small invertebrates, worms and crustaceans, on the seafloor. These barbels are retracted into grooves when not in use. The Black Spot Goatfish is a warm water species preferring north Australian waters and it is also found in Papua New Guinea and northern New Zealand. Two separate populations of black spot goatfish are found in Australia; one on the east coast and one on the west coast. Black-spot goatfish inhabit coastal reefs and estuaries. This species is one of the largest of Australian goatfish, attaining a maximum length of 50 centimetres. Adults are solitary and often timid to approach, while juveniles are found in schools. Spearfishing Strategy for Goatfish: Goaties, especially the larger fish, are usually cagey hence difficult to approach as they are off like a shot when something unusual is in their vicinity A popular method to catch a Goatie is to position yourself on the surface directly above the fish and descend rapidly, which can confuse the Goatfish, allowing you to release your spear once in range. Minimum length for the Claytons is 30cm. The USFA would like to thank, Chef Jai Gibbons for the recipe: http://usfa.org.au/roasted-chilli-goatfish-risotto-serves-2/ Enjoy!

Special thanks to Jai Gibbons for providing awesome recipes, Satay Leatherjacket whod have thought that 10 years ago?!? Guess the length: $25 voucher... For now wed love to know though how long you think a Rock Blackfish is that weighs in at 4292 grams? A $25 spearfishing gift voucher is the prize for the person first in with the closest weight. Post your length guess on the USFA page here. Only posts on the USFA page will be considered. Thanks again!

24.01.2022 Happy New Years from the USFA.
24.01.2022 Luderick - Claytons Cup Species No. 4 Distribution - Generally restricted to shallow coastal waters and estuaries along the east coast, between southern Queensland (around Noosa Heads) and Tasmania. Luderick are often found in large schools around rocky outcrops and jetties. Size - Maximum of approximately 4kg and a length of 70cm.... Characteristics - Luderick are generally dark green/brown in colour with a silvery-grey belly. They possess 8-12 dark, narrow vertical bands across the back. They are mainly herbivorous, feeding on seagrass and green algae, and sometimes molluscs, prawns and polychaete worms. Most luderick are caught in winter. Spearfishing Tip: A timid, yet curious fish, the Luderick aka Blackfish often swims with the pack, however solitary fish are often encountered. Easier to catch once in caves, the Blackfish is quite stand offish in open water and quick reflexes is needed to ping one as a school scoots by. The Blackfish curiosity is its downfall; get in amongst some rocks and hide yourself, and after a while look up and often there will be the school right in front of you. Bleed these fish immediately for a better taste and they are very enjoyable. Thanks again Jai Gibbons Recipe: http://usfa.org.au/luderick-and-lentil-curry-serves-2/

22.01.2022 The USFA committee has just created a new private group for members only. It is the place for members to share more information & ask questions more securely & safely than on other pages or groups. We will be encouraging participation & sharing, including the encouragement of offers of boat rides, trips away, social dives & catch ups, etc, with incentives & prizes. If you havent been invited yet message another friend in the USFA or one of your clubs exec to receive your inv...ite. Welcome to the new group for USFA members only. The reason behind creating another spearfishing group when there are already so many is to try to bring something better & more value to USFA members. This is a place for our members to discuss & ask questions about spearfishing without having to worry about the peanut gallery or trolls which lurk on other groups & pages. We also expect that if someone posts something here that their images & content are not shared to other groups or pages without permission. If you have good video or content to share please do, however if it is also shared on every other page then maybe this isnt the place. This is the place to share for other USFA members, not the rest of the world, there is a difference. This isnt really the place for classified adverts, however If you are trying to sell something at a giveaway or bargain to provide a great opportunity to fellow members great. If you are trying to sell something to provide a great opportunity to yourself, think about it first, the admins certainly will when they look at it. We will constantly be looking at ways to bring better value to USFA members & also ways to encourage non members to see value in joining us, please, if anyone has any ideas about proposing these values to perspective members we would love for you to share it with us. Welcome & thank you guys.

21.01.2022 Kingfish Sashimi, courtesy of Spearochef Jai Gibbons. Enjoy! Kingfish sashimi Japanese rice bowl (Kaisendon) Ingredients- 1 small kingfish loin for sashimi (approx. 200g)... 1 small chunk of kingfish belly skin removed. (approx. 200g) 1 cup of sushi rice cooked. White miso paste 30g Rice wine vinegar 10ml 1 knob ginger grated finely Wasabi paste Tosa soy sauce (Tosa-joyu) you can make it buy it or use the soy you have in the cupboard. Shallots Optional- Edamame Choy sum Salted cucumbers (sliced thinly, sprinkle with salt and rice wine vinegar, let sit for 30 minutes) Avocado Togarashi Pickled ginger Lightly toasted nori (waved over a flame/burner a few times) Use your imagination Kingfish belly- Mix the miso paste, rice wine vinegar and ginger together in a small bowl until a paste has formed. Coat the kingfish belly generously and let it marinade for 30 minutes or so at room temp. Wipe the excess paste of and get it ready to cook. Heat a cast iron, heavy based pan or hibachi grill to a high heat. If using a pan add a very small amount of oil. Approx. one tbsp Sear the belly quickly on both sides and remove from the pan and set it aside. Slice the kingfish belly in a single stroke to the desired thickness between 5mm-10mm is a cook start. Kingfish sashimi- For the sashimi take your block and slice it a little over half a cm thick using a very sharp knife and start at the heal of the knife and pull back and down in one motion. For a more delicate and complex flavored sashimi. Take the block of fish and wrap it in paper towel and place it in the fridge in the vegetable crisper on a plate or in an open container. Changing the paper towel daily is essential. I recommend between 3 and 5 days for an optimal result. This helps by letting the sinew in the flesh breakdown and also removes excess moisture which lets the oils in the fish show there potential. Assemble the rice bowl- add the warm cooked sushi rice to the bottom of the bowl, add your cooked garnishes to the background of the bowl then add your fresh/raw/pickled garnishes to the middle, arrange your sashimi and seared fish in the foreground to show it of as it is the most important part of the dish. Finally garnish with toasted nori/togarashi or toasted sesame if you would like. Serve with tosa soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger on the side or next to the fish. There really aren’t any rules.
21.01.2022 Kingfish Cup this weekend 14-15th November. See here www.usfa.org for all details and registration. The prize list is amazing. Photos are from the weigh in of last years KFC and feature Abdul and his 11.8kg fish, Shuiab’s lovely 12.95kg Kingie and Vita with a 13.1kg fish - this was Vita’s best kingie to date, and I believe it was her first! Vita also won the Ladies event. Abdul had to shoot his fish twice, escaping the first time his skill enabled him to land the fish wi...th a great second shot, and so keen he rocked up to weigh his catch still in his wetsuit! Weather conditions keep improving for this weekend.
21.01.2022 Clayton’s Cup: Results time. We had some suprising results. I must first say that Grayson Hinrichs fishes the event with his right arm fractured, decided on a strategy mid week to resort to shooting fish left handed, yes read that again he speared fish doing it too. ... Derrick Cruz took out honours as the innaugural Clayton’s Cup winner landing 7 of the 10 species with a total length of 250cm. Southpaw Grayson with 5 species and 221cm not far behind. The crayfish, there was barely a half centimetre in the difference between the top two Crays. Only one Red Rocky was speared - suprising! Only one Goatfish - really suprising. Likewise one only Blue Morwong, and one Squid, the Squid was a good sized fish - can I call it a fish?!? Garfish were not in abundance over this weekend, and I think somewhere on the northern beaches there’s a junior breathing a sigh of relief... Thanks so much to everyone who entered the event, the feedback has been great and we are going to tweak a few things that will be announced prior to the next event. There will be more of these. All the winners have won a $25 spearfishing voucher - please contact the USFA So we can organise to get it to you, this also includes the winner of the weight to length guess. Entrants please remember that all fish if they went for example 39.5cm we scale it down to 39, to avoid any grey area, the winning entry is judged on the actual length to the half centimetre. Thanks to all workers of the USFA committee for their assistance in getting this event up and running. USFA protecting Spearfishers rights 72 years and becoming stronger. 18.01.2022 Rock Blackfish (drummer) - Claytons Cup Species 6 Distribution - Eastern rock blackfish are found in surge areas of rocky shorelines along the NSW coast, as well as southern Queensland, Victoria and north-eastern Tasmania. Size - Maximum weight of approximately 9kg and a length of 76cm.... Characteristics - Rock blackfish have a blackish-brown to grey body. They possess a dorsal fin (with 13 spines) that extends to the tail base. Their diet includes cunjevoi, red bait crab and cabbage seaweed. They are a tough fighter and a great sportfish, using their strong swimming tail to hide under rock ledges or in crevices. Confusing species - Silver Drummer (Kyphosus sydneyanus) are found on coastal reefs in NSW, South Australia and southern Western Australia. They are distinguished from the eastern rock blackfish by their silver colour and dorsal spine count of 11 instead of 13. DPI Size bag limit: 30cm and a bag limit of 10 Spearo Tip: Rock Blackfish aka Black Drummer aka Pigs as spearos often call them usually roam the area they inhabit from white-water to deeper boulders, often upon seeing a diver the fish will duck into the nearest cover it can get to, a practice here is to immediately dive and follow that fish as they have a habit of swimming into the cover and turning back around to see where you now are this is an opportunity to take a steady shot before they quickly turn back into the cover, remember to smoothly retrieve the line and spear not allowing the fish to go back into the cave. Thanks Chef Jai Gibbons http://usfa.org.au/crispy-skin-black-drummer-beurre-noiset/

17.01.2022 Bream - Claytons Cup Fish Species No.2 Distribution - Yellowfin bream are found along the NSW coast, as well as in Queensland and Victoria. Bream inhabit estuaries up to the brackish water limit (the change from salt to freshwater) and inshore rocky reef habitats near ocean beaches and rocky headlands. Size - Maximum weight of 4kg and a length of 60 cm.... DPI requirements: Minimum size 25cm and a bag limit of 10 in total with Tarwhine, possession limit 20. Claytons minimum length: 30cm Characteristics - Yellowfin bream have a silver to olive-green body with yellowish pectoral, ventral and anal fins. They are opportunistic feeders with their diet including small crabs, prawns, molluscs, pipis and small fish. Spearo Strategy: Spearos find Bream around jetties and wreckage, under the whitewater, along rock edges, in caves (where they are often easiest to land) and amongst the white boulders on drop offs. Shallow water sees best results often come from being on the same level as the fish, using available cover to hide your size, wait for the fish to swim past, do not track the fish with your gun but have it under your body and when the right shot presents itself extend gun smoothly and release spear. Deeper fish can be chilling in midwater or skulking along the bottom, here a silent descent using gentle finning and equalising and releasing directly from above works; or try resting in amongst cracks, shielding your eyes, waiting for the fish to swim to you. Recipe Thanks to Jia Gibbons http://usfa.org.au/pan-roasted-bream-hainanese-style-ginge/

More Kingfish Cup memories from 2019 - Marcus Cav placed 5th with his 14.13kg Kingie; Derrick Cruz 4th with a healthy fish of 14.85kg. These two guys are so keen to dive on any day, these fish are well deserved for them.
14.01.2022 Grayson Hinrichs with his winning fish to take out the innaugural 2019 Adreno Kingfish Cup, and this year backing it up with another great Kingie taken out of his great mate Joe Schneider's boat. Presentation is on this Wednesday at Adreno from 1900. Can Grayson take out the KFC two years running? There were some healthy fish taken off the Northern beaches over the two days of the event, we shall find out Wednesday night.
14.01.2022 Blue Morwong - Claytons Cup Species 9 Nemadactylus douglasii Characteristics... Morwong are characterised by an extended middle section of the pectoral fin. Grey or Rubber Lip Morwong tend to be a pale, silvery blue with the occasional hint of brown or green. These fish have much larger, thicker lips than the similar Jackass Morwong. These fish are characterised by a extended middle section of the pectoral fin. Size Adult fish may attain a total length of approximately 80 cm and a total weight of 4 kg. Distribution Grey or Rubberlip Morwong inhabit the continental shelf waters from Moreton Bay in the north to central Victoria and can be found as far south as Tasmania. These fish are commonly caught on or near reefs in water depths of 10-100 m. Legalities: Minimum size 30cm with a Bag Limit of 10 Claytons size: 35cm minimum Spearo Tip: Blue Mowies are found in all depths of water for spearos. Areas they particularly like are off drop offs where larger boulders see them hanging in large numbers, sand lines onto flat reef and broken ground that has lots of sand/shell grit (see uw photo) and weed covering the seafloor. Larger fish can be timid so a gentle approach works best to not spook them. Recipe thanks to Chef Jai Gibbons http://usfa.org.au/crispy-skin-blue-morwong-lemon-butter-s/
13.01.2022 Red Rock Cod - Claytons Cup Species 10 Scorpaena jacksoniensis Characteristics... The Eastern Red Scorpionfish colouration is highly variable from light grey/brown to bright red with blotches or may also be a mottling of all these colours and blotches. They have skin flaps on the head, lateral line and other parts of the body, 12 venomous spines on the dorsal fin and a very large mouth. Size May attain a total length of approximately 45 cm. DPI Bag Limit: 5 There is no minimum size limit Distribution Common on NSW coastal reefs. Claytons minimum Size: 30cm Spearo Tip: Opportunistic scavengers is a good way to describe Red Rockies, they wont miss their breakfast for anything. Look for ambush places where these fish use their splendid camouflage and great patience waiting to pounce on unsuspecting prey. Lying in amongst broken boulders or the L shape of meeting rock ledges are likely starting places to look. Spearos often encounter their first sighting as the Red Rocky attacks the divers just speared fish. Use enough angle on with shot placement so as spear will not bounce out, or become stuck. Recipe thanks to Chef jai Gibbons http://usfa.org.au/red-rock-cod-bacon-fermented-chilli-sti/

10.01.2022 Claytons cup day 2 update. We have just seen the water and the seas have come up an little. We dont need a safety vote, however please be very careful entering an exiting the water. If you feel you must dive, find sheltered spots and use common sense and err on the side of caution alway.
09.01.2022 The Canada Cup scheduled for this coming Sunday has been postponed due to safety concerns for water quality on Central Coast beaches. Storm water run off and effluent overflow has made it unsafe to dive several of the local beaches with warnings issued by the state government and Beach Watch. Divers enjoyment and safety is our utmost priority and we dont want to see any divers getting sick in these atrocious conditions. A new date will be announced in coming days which will likely be in April or May. Thankyou all for your understanding and hope to see you at the new scheduled event. Thanks from the Sealions committee.

08.01.2022 Update for the Kingfish Cup 2020 Ticket sales will now be closed at 8.00am on the 14th November. After this time you will not be able to purchase tickets and enter the competition. Good luck....
07.01.2022 Hello Everyone, You can Sign on tomorrow for the Adreno Sydney Kingfish Cup at 7:00am Please remember to text.
07.01.2022 Kingfish Cup 2020 is almost upon us, this weekend the 14th and 15th November ( see link here http://usfa.org.au/ ) The build up with Kingies to this year and last feels similar, a patch of big fish appearing late October last year, as did occur again this year, then everything went quite for a short period, then the Kingies obliged and came right on queue for the inaugural event. Some photos to come in future posts this week of those who were in the right place at the right... time and then were skillful enough to land their fish. The USFA cannot thank Adreno for being involved in the KFC and especially Craig Seadog for his efforts to obtain the sponsors that make the event’s great prizelist; see here CraigSpearedDog testing the gantry in preparation for the coming weigh-in. Craig is great value, and and takes it to another level with his customer service he and his crew deliver at Adreno Sydney. A few pics will be added throughout the following days of last year’s fish, and some great Kingfish recipes from SpearoChef Jai Gibbons, so stay tuned Spearos!
06.01.2022 That concludes the competition. Thank you for participating in the Adreno Sydney Kingfish Cup Thanks for diving safely Thank you to the USFA & Adrenos Tim Neilsen, Robbie Lewis, Samuel Cox & most of all thank you
06.01.2022 Squid - Claytons Cup Species 5 Characteristics Squid have eight arms and two tentacles around the mouth, with each arm having two rows of tentacles and four rows on the club ends of the tentacles. Loligo Squids have an elongate mantle with rhombic terminal fins while Calamari Squid have a more robust mantle with a rounded end and fins that extend nearly the entire length of the mantle. Arrow Squid have a heavily muscled, narrow mantle and tentacles with suckers containing sha...rp teeth. Size Southern Calamari squid have been known to grow to 38 cm (mantle length). Bag Limit 20 in total Distribution Various species inhabit NSW waters from the shallow inshore reefs and weed beds to the offshore, open water areas. Mitre Squid have been recorded from northern NSW down to Botany Bay, while Southern Calamari Squid are found throughout NSW usually to a depth of less than 100 m. Arrow Squid are also found throughout NSW waters and live anywhere from the estuaries to 500 m deep offshore areas. Spearo Tip: Squid are readily accessible for the spearo, they are masters of camouflage and easily spooked therefore extremely difficult to locate when they reside over their favoured weed beds. Dive off the weed, be flat on the same depth as the weed, quietly begin to search looking above the weed where it is easier to detect this tasty specie. 04.01.2022 Claytons Cup: Results time. We had some suprising results. I must first say that Grayson Hinrichs fishes the event with his right arm fractured, decided on a strategy mid week to resort to shooting fish left handed, yes read that again he speared fish doing it too. ... Derrick Cruz took out honours as the innaugural Claytons Cup winner landing 7 of the 10 species with a total length of 250cm. Garfish were not in abundance over this weekend, and I think somewhere on the northern beaches theres a junior breathing a sigh of relief... Congratulations again to these spearos for their meritorious efforts and spend your voucher wisely... 04.01.2022 Leather Jacket: Claytons Cup Species 8 Characteristics Several features set Leatherjackets apart from other fish species, these include: a small mouth with beak-like teeth, rough sometimes sandpaper like skin, small gill openings, and a single serrated spine on the top of the head that fits neatly into a groove. Most Leatherjackets are considered opportunistic feeders and readily feed on many different items including algae, crustaceans, molluscs, fish and polychaete worms. ... Size Are generally found under 1 kg in weight but some offshore species can grow to 3 kg. DPI Bag Limit: 20 in total Claytons: 30cm minimum and just one only leatherjacket of any specie to be presented Distribution There are more than 20 species of Leatherjackets found throughout NSW waters and, depending on the species, can be caught in estuarine, coastal and offshore waters to depths of 250 m or more. In estuarine waters these fish are often found around artificial structures such as pylons and wharfs or are found near seagrass beds e.g. Fan-belly, Six Spine and Rough Leatherjackets. In coastal and offshore areas they can be found on rocky reefs, sand/mud bottom or in sponge beds e.g. Six Spine, Yellow-finned, Black Reef, Velvet Recipe thanks to Chef Jai Gibbons http://usfa.org.au/leather-jacket-satay-spicy-peanut-sauce/

03.01.2022 Eastern Rock Lobster - Claytons Cup Species 3 scientific name: Jasus verreauxi Characteristics... Eastern Rock Lobster have a green body and brownish-orange legs. Their abdominal segments are smooth and unsculptured on their dorsal surface. They generally move into deeper water in early winter, and return closer to the shoreline in late August. Size Maximum weight of 8 kg and a carapace length of 26 cm (1 m including the antennas). Distribution Eastern Rock Lobsters inhabit the continental shelf along the east coast of Australia, from Tweed Heads in New South Wales, around Tasmania, through to Port MacDonnell in South Australia. They hide in holes and crevices around rocky areas and reefs, preferring vegetative cover such as weed/kelp. Legal Sizes Minimum - 10.4cm Maximum - 18cm therefore keep none over 18cm nor below 10.4cm. You are allowed a bag limit of 2 Eastern Crays. Rock Lobsters (crayfish) are measured along the length of the carapace or head, along a straight line from the point of the union of the second antennae or large feelers to the centre of the posterior margin of the carapace or head, ignoring any attached hairs. Confusing species In the south of the state the Southern Rock Lobster (Jasus edwardsii) is found. Eastern Rock Lobsters are green in colour, Southern Lobsters are red. In the north of the state the Ornate Rock Lobster (Panulirus ornatus) occurs. Ornate Lobsters are greenish blue to reddish brown in colour, with orange spines on the head. Spearo Tip: Crays become more abundant after big winter swells where they move in from the Continental Shelf and reside along our coastline. Crays can be found all year round, if you know where to look. Think of Crayfish like Cockroaches; cockys hide under fridges, behind ovens, down drains, basically nooks and crannies; Crays are similar, taste a lot better though. Vertical slots in the rock platforms that have weed covering these cracks are great hang outs; scout around areas you see where the cunjevoi has been stripped off the rock shelves a sure cray feeding area. Good luck! Thanks again Chef Jai Gibbons Recipe: http://usfa.org.au/eastern-cray-mornay-serves-2/

01.01.2022 Garfish - Claytons Cup Species 7 Hyporhamphus australis Distribution: Sea garfish are endemic only to Australian waters and live in sheltered bays, clear coastal waters and some estuaries to waters about 20m deep. These fish school near the surface at night and over weed and seagrass beds during the day.... Size: Known to attain 40cm total length. Characteristics: These fish are a pale, greenish blue on the back and upper sides and have a blue edged silver band along the sides. They also have three narrow brown lines along the back, above the silver band. Confusing species: Other species of garfish, but are distinguished by their three brown bands along their back. DPI legality: Bag limit of 20 Claytons size: 25cm tip of beak to tip of tail Spearo Tip: Yes, there is not much to aim at, however they taste delicious and are definitely worth pursuing when encountered. Often best to exhale slightly so you sink a few centimetres under the water line and this then stops your speargun from waving about, keep your speargun close to your body and when a fish is chosen (best not to shoot into the school randomly) smoothly extend your speargun and release your spear in one motion. If you misplace the school look over your shoulder as they will be skipping over your rig line. Thanks for the recipe Chef Jai Gibbons http://usfa.org.au/herb-and-parmesan-crumbed-garfish-tarta/
