25.01.2022 In accordance with the clubs new heightened safety protocols, we ask our members to strictly follow the hygiene procedures outlined below for every session. These measures were created to ensure everyones safety, and it is up to you to help the club in preventing any transmissions of bacteria during training.

24.01.2022 If I had to come up with guideline Rules for Muay Thai based on my nearly 8 years of fighting fulltime in Thailand, my secrets for success or things I aspire to or watch for, these are my 15, as of now. Kevin made this nice graphic.

24.01.2022 "In our previous COVID-19 outbreak update, we announced that Sydney Uni Muay Thai would resume training with heightened measuresan informed decision made during a difficult yet still manageable period. I extend my thanks to everyone who helped keep each other safe in training last week. As you know though, the COVID-19 situation has deteriorated quickly, culminating in the Universitys first confirmed case on campus. Even with our current heightened measures, these recent ev...ents mean we can no longer guarantee your safety in the gym. To persist training otherwise would be utterly irresponsible and a breach of your trust. As such, we are suspending SUMT training between 17 to 31 March. This includes the structured training sessions, open Sunday time slots and Monday sparring classes. Know that this decision was difficult to make, and will be equally hard for us all to endure. It is however a necessary step to keep everyone safe and strong during this time. And believe me. When we return to the gym, we will do so stronger than ever. That is, after all, who we all are at SUMT. In the meantime, stay tuned to our group messenger chat, Facebook page and Instagram for more information. Take good care of yourself and your loved ones, including everyone in this family." - Philip Le, SUMT President

23.01.2022 What is the secret to Sagats power? Golden era Muay Thai legend... (the REAL street fighter Sagat!) Sagat shows us how resilience and self-belief gave him pow...er that endured the test of time and hardships. At the peak of his career, Sagat LOST 9 fights in a row. He thought his fight career was coming to an end. He could have hung up his gloves then. On all accounts, he had a good run winning multiple championship titles from the top stadiums. Retiring from the sport at 25 years old is not uncommon in Thailand. But a wise monks words to him would change his life: "Dont be seduced by fame when you are rising, dont give up when you fall. Keep going." Holding these words close to his heart, Sagat came back to the sport and won 9 knockout wins in a row. At 62 years old today, Sagat still considers himself an active fighter. He hopes to fight his last fight at 70.

22.01.2022 Looking at some common mistakes our coaches see most often with Cortex Training Academy Muay Thai Coach Shunsuke Namiki and Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness Kickboxing Course coach James Kwok. How many of these do you need to look out for?

21.01.2022 We are experiencing an unprecedented event, one that affects every single aspect of our individual and collective existence, in our respective communities. Time...s like these bring out the worst and best in people. Many amongst us are hugely affected; particularly ones who have lost their jobs, incomes and those who are ill, isolated and vulnerable. We must try to pull together as a community and help where we can. For those who need a decent meal or meals, please let me know directly. I reckon Im a dab hand at home-cooked fried rice (nasi goreng with egg) and Ill be able to whip up a take away box (and deliver, within reason around inner west Sydney), or leave out for fast collection. Please feel free to share this post with those who need it. Community - we are what we make it. https://www.facebook.com/SocialAlchemyAustralia/ *Ps - If you would like to adopt this as a personal contribution that you could easily roll out in your communities, please feel free to copy this message and use in your individual networks. Substitute accordingly your specific culinary expertise and offerings. I know that many of us are already contributing in many diverse ways to the community. Keep fighting the good fight.

20.01.2022 As kids, Destyne Butler Jr and Kenneth Sims Jr dreamed of boxing glory. Both found early success as youth boxers on the South Side of Chicago Butler demonstrated enough promise at age 12 to merit a profile in the Chicago Tribune, in which he proclaimed his intent to box in the London Olympics, to front a Wheaties box, to haul in winnings. Simss determination to box in the 2012 Olympics caught the attention of German film-maker Andr Hrmann, who made a documentary short on him and his coach his father, Kenneth Sims Sr in 2009, with the intent to make a feature film on the two boxing prodigies.

20.01.2022 Jamel Herrings dark story could be overwhelming but the world champion boxer speaks with such a light touch that all the death and depression, the memories of the Iraq war and his PTSD, are lit up as markers of a past that has shaped him. Herring is explaining how revisiting the bleakest moments actually help him and others who hear everything he overcame on his way to winning the WBO superfeatherweight title a year ago last week.

19.01.2022 How to spar with a legend masterclass edition. When you are elite, like @asatenpow (the #1 USA prospect in GLORY), you have nothing to prove in sparring. ... This is his FIRST spar with Saenchai. 1. Start the round light, fun, and smiling let Saenchai dictate the pace. Is it really that hard to have some fun? Play is an integral part of Thai style sparring. And letting the legend dictate the pace is a great form of respect. 2. Playfully shake your head when you shut down techniques: this is the equivalent of busting your friends balls! This is a tease, challenge done in a light hearted way. 3. Use his techniques against him: imitation is the ultimate form of flattery. He loves it when you use his techniques, it means you studied him a lot! 4. Earn respect by denying his technique with skill, not athleticism: brute force is not respected, especially against a GOAT Muay Femur like Saenchai. If you show that you know Muay Thai skill, you earn his respect. 5. Pull the shots you know have a good chance of landing: you and Saenchai both know he can take a good shot. No need to follow through unless youre looking for a war. Pulling your shots is a form of respect, especially so if its your first spar together. 6. Let him count you out! Its an honor to play around and play dead against the greatest. Its letting go of the ego and just having fun. Had to share this because too many people dont know sparring etiquette, and Asa displayed an absolute masterclass and it was beautiful to watch. Khongsittha Muay Thai is such a great gym! They look like theyre always having way too much fun . Tag a respectful sparring partner you appreciate!

18.01.2022 For three months I thought nothing of it then I plucked up the courage to go, says the bantamweight. I was the only girl there but the minute I walked in it changed my life dramatically. I knew it was where I was meant to be. I walked out of the gym, threw my cigarettes in the bin, got up at 5am the next morning and went running. My life changed that day and Ive never looked back. Before then, Courtenay had no idea where she was meant to be. Her father had walked out on ...the family when she was 10, while her mother ran a pub and gave driving lessons to support her daughter and son. A teenage tearaway, Courtenay kept her own hours, many of them forever lost in a drunken haze. I was really unhappy and I had no direction but suddenly I knew what I wanted to do, she says. Boxing made me happy and the weight started falling off because I wasnt smoking or drinking any more. I realised what I was doing was going to turn my life around. See more

16.01.2022 "My interview with Phettae, a Thai female fighter who has been told to train to fight as one of the first female fighters at Lumpinee Stadium. This potentially looks to be a Muay Thai changing event, something thought impossible only a few years ago. Hear what she think about being one of the first, and if she ever dreamed of one day fighting there: Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu - Muay Thai"

15.01.2022 We are so pleased to start up training again after getting the green light to return to SUSF! Check out our new training protocol designed to keep our members and team safe.

13.01.2022 How to push a sparring partner 1. Offer constant exchanges and pressure: this forces things to happenaction and reaction. Things will reveal itself quick. ... 2. Match speed and power: if you are bigger, faster, stronger, or more experienced, it doesnt matter if you match their traits. This way you both get good training. 3. Give and take shots: sparring isnt always about winning. Give some, take some, you guys are teammates. 4. Relentless pressure if they fading: you are helping them by pushing them to new heights and building mental and physical toughness. 5. Show them their weakness: training is where you can practice a fight finish without actually getting finished. If weaknesses arent shown and corrected here, it will happen in the fight. Tag a great training partner / coach who has helped you out more than you could ever ask for! See more

08.01.2022 Cuteness Overload: Muay Thai Wondergirls Meet 6-year-old Riina and 8-year-old Remina, 2 half-Thai, half-Japanese sisters from Udon Thani, Thailand. The sisters ...started training Muay Thai 3 years ago with their dad, ex-Muay Thai fighter Bunthung Kaennorsing. Living in the remote countryside, Bunthung wanted the sisters to be able to protect themselves. Riina and Remina love it so much theyve both started competing. Remina even won the title for 20kg girls champion in 2019. Reminas favourite fighter is Saenchai, while Riina admires Lerdsila. Bunthung believes that Muay Thai training gives the village children a positive goal to work towards, and keeps them away from bad influence or getting into trouble!

07.01.2022 Among the steady stream of stretchers nurse practitioner Phillipe Nover saw pass through his New York City area hospital last weekend, the former UFC fighter was shocked to see a familiar face. It was another nurse around his age, a man Nover knew was as fit and healthy as himself, having spent many shifts working side by side with him. I cant breathe, man, he told Nover, as other gurneys buzzed past them and paper-gowned medical personnel hustled back and forth through a chaotic emergency room. Nover put on a brave face and wished his colleague well, trying to bury the thoughts that the virus currently sweeping through New York City could take him out as well.

07.01.2022 The tears of Ruqsana Begum, which splash down on the blue canvas of the ring, are not a sign of weakness. They are, instead, markers of the battles she has won over the years. As a young Bangladeshi woman from east London on her way to becoming a Muay Thai world champion, Begum endured an arranged marriage, panic attacks, depression, bullying in the gym and ravaging bouts of ME [chronic fatigue syndrome].

06.01.2022 Due to the numerous COVID-19 hot spots that have been appearing recently throughout Sydney, SUMT has decided to temporarily suspend training once more. Members can no longer register for a training session on the booking system Calendly. SUMT will continue to closely monitor the evolving situation to consider when it would the safest to return to training. We apologise to those who have looked forward to training consistently again, and wish our members and the community the best of health in these trying times.

05.01.2022 "You would have seen numerous announcements by the Australian government, NSW Health and the Universitys Vice-Chancellor about the COVID-19 outbreak. Many of you are understandably concerned about what this means for SUMTs training during this time. Weve spoken with the Coaching and Executive teams on how we proceed as a Club. Your safety and welfare are our priority, and any decision around training continuity is always done with your safety in mind. To that effect, the f...ollowing will take effect immediately. Based on our safety assessments and current guidance by SUSF, we will resume training as scheduled. Your coaching team has agreed to continue running training sessions under heightened safety and hygiene measures. Given the current circumstances, the following measures will be in place: Executives will notify the Club if the upcoming training session is proceeding as scheduled or cancelled. This notice will be 24 hours in advance, via this chat and socials. Coaches will request any attending members showing symptoms to cease training and return home. This is to ensure everyones safety. Brydens Boxing Gym is to be cleaned prior to each training session. Tuesday training will transition to the group fitness studio at 8pm, to give all members additional space. Please note this is an evolving situation and that our continuity is subject to SUSF guidance. These measures can change at any moment, so we ask that you check our FB Messenger chat regularly for updates. This is an unusually intense time, and we thank you for your patience and flexibility as we navigate this. So that we all train safely, we ask you of the following: If you are feeling unwell, do not attend training and instead stay home. Disinfect your personal equipment (gloves, hand wraps) and wear clean apparel for each training. We understand that some members may be uncomfortable training with us during this period. If you make this decision, know that you have our full understanding and support, and that we will be here when you resume training. Stay strong and flexible--as we always have in the gym, and we will absolutely get through this." Philip Le, Sydney Uni Muay Thai Club President

03.01.2022 Boxing training starts with coach Andre Murrell on Mondays (for all levels) and Thursdays (intermediate-advanced) at 7:30pm! Come join us for a hit Andre has... learnt from striking gyms across Sydney and in Thailand, and has built previous coaching experience at Sydney Uni Muay Thai. He started striking immediately out of high school, committed entirely, and years later reinforces that consistency is key. Andre believes that the product of this hard work is building technique and striking IQ alongside unmatchable endurance. Andre aims to build this philosophy into his classes. See more
