25.01.2022 Tell us how did you felt about online exams and ProctorU! We'd love to hear what students have to say about their experiences last semester, and if you have any concerns please let us know in the chat below or email us confidentially at: [email protected] You can check out our Ask Abe Q&A Article on ProctorU here: http://srcusyd.net.au/ask-abe-about-proctoru-concerns/
24.01.2022 Instead of empty words and hollow gestures, the SRC encourages students to go beyond R U Okay. Dont just ask how people are going work out why they arent okay. Dont just post on social mediaunderstand the structures that create stress and misery. Dont just gesture towards Lifeline or Beyond Bluefight for public housing, fight for increases in health funding, fight for an end to the system which takes all it can from us while depriving us of the social and economic resources we need to be okay. And, if nothing else, read this piece, published by Honi Soit in 2018 and written by USyd student Dan Reede, to understand the limitations of the sloganeering and tokenism we see on days like today. https://honisoit.com/2018/08/beyond-r-u-okay/

23.01.2022 Today the police shut down over a dozen simultaneous COVID-safe, 19-person protests, arresting and finding numerous students for safely challenging attacks on the University system and cuts by USyd management. One student is being kept at Newtown, and many more face large fines. The University of Sydney Students Representative Council condemns the Police repression, and demands the rescission of all fines and charges against protestors. We also encourage students to attend ...tonights Democracy is Essential - Restore the right to protest in NSW campaign launch tonight to join the campaign against the police powers which attempt to silence the defence of our education https://facebook.com//photos/gm.24670164/115820296931110/ Despite the repression, staff and students will continue to publicly protest and disrupt until we realise a better University system. 22.01.2022 Have you been asked to 'Show Good Cause'? If you do not satisfy the University’s progression requirements (e.g., WAM of 50, failed same unit twice, failed practical), you may be asked to show good cause as to why you should continue studying your degree. If you are already on a progression ‘stage’ or if you believe you are going to fail a compulsory or practical unit of study, you may want to consider how to write a show good cause appeal, and more importantly, consider what you need to do with these exams and during the summer break to help your situation. Read the full article on Show Good Cause appeals here and contact the SRC if you need help! http://ow.ly/VlwF50CgcAO

19.01.2022 Activists are phoning the office of Acting Immigration Minister, Alan Tudge, to condemn this department's latest act of crueltythe denial of phones and communication to refugees in detention. We encourage all students to participate in this phone-a-thon, which began earlier today, to communicate the gravity of this injustice and the scale of our resistance. https://www.facebook.com/events/410415659930177/... From the event: "Refugees detained in the hotel prisons have already spent seven years confined in detention centres on Manus Island or Nauru for seeking asylum, which is a human right. They have now spent a year detained inside these hotels, 24/7 inside a lifeless building, no freedom to take a walk in the park or to go outside at all, no freedom to choose what to eat, surrounded by security guards, as least one of which has tested positive for COVID-19. Their only lifeline is a phone for external human contact. Now the Australian Government want to take away their final freedom, the dignity of communication with family, friends, and the outside world."
17.01.2022 The inaugural SRC INFORMS session on tenancy was recorded live! Our first session, presented by SRC's own, Caseworker Mel De Silva, discussed tenancy issues and dealing with your landlord. Mel focuses on the before, during and after of living somewhere (especially stuff that'll stop people getting their money back when they move out would be my focus). Check out the video and ask any questions in the comments below or by emailing [email protected]
17.01.2022 Yesterday, police repressed attempts at peacefully, safely, and (probably) legally protesting vicious attacks on education quality and accessibility perpetrated by Morrison and management. Today we learnt that, despite crying poor to justify significant incursions into the quality of our education, the Uni is likely to finish the year with a net surplus of $58 million, with projected student fee revenue *increasing* from $1.688 billion in 2019 to $1.735 billion in 2020. Whil...e we reject the premise that a revenue crisis necessitates savage attacks on quality education, we nonetheless welcome the Uni's figures, which we think suggests their brutal cuts were not necessary. Now that it's clear there's scope for increased spending, the University of Sydney Students' Representative Council demands an immediate end to austerity, the reversal of all course and job cuts, and a return to putting pedagogical practice before elitist spending programs. More specifically, we demand that USyd maintains its measly reductions in upper management pay, and instead restores courses and work for casuals. We demand that they stop lavish building programs which dont improve the learning space to student ratio and instead spend money on extra admin staff to reduce work stress and improve turnaround time. We demand that we ditch the VC's business class flights around the world, and instead fund smaller tutorials, more intimate education, and increased funding of student unions, like the SRC. Stay tuned for further information on how you can join the fight to re-prioritise what really matters.

14.01.2022 President's Report, Week 3, Semester 2: ~ Liam Donohoe The comprehensive repression of the August 28 National Day of Action Fridays protest cast a long shadow over what was a comparatively quiet week. Angered by the brutality of the NSW Police, the defence against the Liberals attacks on higher education was, unsurprisingly, the weeks theme. Solidarity rallies raged across campus, organising meetings were well-attended, and plans were put into motion for further new campai...Continue reading

12.01.2022 At the Council meeting on Tuesday the 10th of November, the 92nd's final for the year, a motion passed in defence of Jeremy Corbyn, critical of his expulsion from the UK Labour party. The motion read: Preamble Jeremy Corbyn is the victim of a monstrous campaign of slander. His suspension from the British Labour Party in October, on the pretence of his supposed anti-semitism, is an attack upon the anti-racist and anti-imperialist left internationally and the Palestinian soli...darity struggle in particular. Jeremy Corbyn is not anti-Semitic. There is no evidence that he has ever done or said anything indicating prejudice against Jewish people. The accusation is a cynical lie intended to intimidate and silence the left. Unlike many establishment politicians and journalists who are joining in the pile on, Jeremy Corby has a decades long history of activism against racism and fascism. What the leaderships of the British Labour and Conservative parties and the mainstream media object to is Corbyn’s support for the Palestinian struggle against the racist, apartheid state of Israel. They are trying to paint any serious criticism of Israel as anti-semitism in an attempt to undercut the growing opposition to Israel’s war crimes against the Palestinian people. As a bonus they can paint the left more broadly as anti-semitic in an attempt to smear any opposition to the system. This is all the more concerning as the revival of the far right internationally has led to a growth in actual anti-semitism. However the critics of Corbyn are blind to this and either exclusively focus on false accusations that the left is anti-semitic or else try to draw an equalivance between alt right anti-semitism and left wing opposition to Zionism and the Israeli state. Platform The University of Sydney SRC rejects the claim that Corbyn is anti-semitic and opposes his suspension from the British Labour Party. The SRC also recognises that the suspension of Corbyn is part of a broader attack on the anti-racist and anti-imperialist left, and in particular on those seeking to show solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for self determination and justice. The SRC rejects the idea that opposition to Zionism is anti-semitic. Instead it affirms that opposition to Zionism and the apartheid, racist state, of Israel is a legitimate anti-racist and anti-imperialist position

10.01.2022 President's Report, Week 2, Semester 2: ~ Liam Donohoe Amid the backdrop of the governments attacks on students and the slow strangulation of the higher education sector, the return to semester has proven both historic and eventful. Beyond the remarkable, and potentially risky, return to in-person classes, the first week of semester two also featured elections, protests, and even arrests. ...Continue reading

08.01.2022 In addition to organising protests against the destruction of our education, the University of Sydney Students' Representative Council also recently provided a comprehensive and well-researched submission to the Senate Inquiry into the Higher Education Support Amendment Bill 2020. The submission addresses many aspects of Morrison's attack on students and the sector, but particularly demonstrates that it will not achieve the government's stated aims while punishing and deterr...ing aspiration. We encourage students to read it here: https://drive.google.com//1psoOEzmS0V-8FnpAsRF0LPEpH/view And with the news that Tasmanian and South Australia Senators intend to sell us out, we urgently need to fight to avoid the countless harms detailed in the submission. Join us at this Wednesday's Day of Action in defence of our education https://www.facebook.com/events/349737656213531

07.01.2022 Today student and staff protesters had our largest education actions so far, with 200+ marching through Victoria Park and occupying City Road. Many thanks to the staff who organised the sensational teach in an education event on the law lawns, which brought hundreds onto campus. We commend all students for their bravery, particularly students who have been arrested or fined. Please consider donating to this GoFundMe to support those students. We will be back with more d...ramatic action imminently. https://gf.me/u/y2afcj

06.01.2022 President's Report, Week 4 Though we are only four weeks into the semester, you could be forgiven for thinking its been longer. For one, thanks to the extended holidays were now basically already half way through September. For another, the return to class, and, for some, classrooms has been dramatic. But of late the epicness of the early semester, with its arrests and protests, has given way to a calmer freneticism, with the SRC offering its usual beneficent services while...Continue reading
03.01.2022 Student and staff protestors need your help paying fines issued during last Wednesday's police repression. At least $9,000 worth of fines were issued throughout the actions, with some protestors facing protracted legal battles and potential further financial penalties. But while we welcome all help, we particularly encourage alumni and more securely employed staff to donate. https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-students-fined-at-quotno We see fine-assistance as a crucial way allies can support us if they cannot physically protest. And with another Day of Action planned for this Wednesday, further opportunities for financial support are likely to emerge in coming days. https://www.facebook.com/events/349737656213531

02.01.2022 Join the Students' Representative Council at Wednesday's launch of the Democracy is Essential campaign! The right to protest is a necessary feature of democracy and an essential tool in the fight against oppression. While our personal obligations to isolate and maintain physical distancing are crucial for protecting vulnerable people during this pandemic, the inequalities and injustices of society are too pressing and too ongoing to cop silently. We encourage all students to attend this campaign launch and to join the fight to restore the right to protest in NSW, for both the sake of our civil liberties and the better world they help us win. Joining us at this launch, which will immediately follow Wednesday's Day of Action against the cuts, is a great start.

01.01.2022 BREAKING: The Liberal's attack on the University sector has passed the House of Representative. The Senate will now decide whether working class students are deterred from higher education, whether the University sector is defunded to the point of no return, and whether student debt will exponentially increase during a devastating recession. The USyd Students' Representative Council will continue to work with the NUS National Union of Students to resist the Higher Education Reform Package 2020 by whatever means necessary, and even in the face of oppressive policing.

01.01.2022 Well, this is it. After 48 weeks, and 32 written reports, I feel weird to have reached, finally, my last for Honi. And while at times it felt like it would never come, or that it couldn’t come soon enough, I am still surprised, and perhaps just a bit unprepared, to find myself here so soon. With the year coming to an end, and my activities slowing down, I ask that you forgive some indulgence. Read the full report here: http://srcusyd.net.au/src-presidents-report/
