15.01.2022 ISOLATE 2020 M.Arch Graduate Exhibition, University of Tasmania Isolate showcases the culminating studio projects of the graduating cohort in the Master of Architecture program at the University of Tasmania for 2020.... This exhibition demonstrates the resilience and ambition of a cohort that have endured an extraordinary year in which borders hardened, cities emptied out, and the educational experience was reduced to traversing gridded matrices on glowing screens from private cells. Graduating into a new world upended by economic and environmental crisis, the exhibition title refers both to the historical circumstances and geographical nature of these students’ professional formation. This year is also the first that the capstone studio, coordinated by Professor Julian Worrall, has been organised as four independent research studios, each advancing a distinct focus and agenda. Studio leaders Miranda Nieboer; Helen Norrie; Andrew Steen; and Julian Worrall; focussed respectively on Antarctic extremes; urban food exchanges; auxiliary architectures for culture, and framing artists’ worlds through architecture. The exhibition will be presented in two distinct iterations the main show in Launceston; and a select show in Hobart, presenting the work of nominees for the Barry McNeill Student Prize. A printed catalogue of the exhibition will be distributed at the openings. Isolate: 2020 Master of Architecture Graduate Exhibition. Lantern Gallery, A&D Building, Inveresk. Opens Friday 20 November, 6:00pm. Runs to Sunday 13 December 2020. Registration required at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/isolate-2020-master-of-archite

12.01.2022 Is the dynamic environment of Antarctica a canvas for alternative architectures? University of Tasmania architecture graduate Kaelan Durbin’s Antarctic ‘Aeolie...n’ project recently took out the 2020 Australian Institute of Architects (TAS) Barry McNeill prize. Kaelan’s project investigates how the Antarctic environment can inform a new type of research station. His speculative project is inspired by processes of interaction between the wind and the Antarctic icescape. Kaelan’s project is part of the research by design studio With/In Antarctic Extremes, led by IMAS affiliated Dr Miranda Nieboer, which explores the relationship between the environment and people. 10.01.2022 We’re continuing our efforts to protect Tasmania’s iconic birds of prey by joining forces with the University of Tasmania and Greening Australia in a new partne...rship to provide safe perching places for large birds of prey in the vicinity of our assets. Designed and built by UTAS Architecture and Design Students, the innovative new perches will be installed alongside Greening Australia’s ‘Species Hotels’, and positioned in proximity to our power poles, which are known to be used as perches by large birds of prey, such as Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagles in the Northern Midlands area. The first design workshops are underway and we’re pleased to share a first look at some of the initial designs by first year Bachelor of Architecture and Built Environment students. We’re excited to see what’s to come! Find out more about our focus on protecting threatened birdlife at tasnetworks.com.au/threatenedbirds
