12.01.2022 NOTE: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the following post may contains images of deceased persons. CAIK is excited to announce the launch of our new branding! The new style and design draws from Buldyan ... (Grandfather), 2018.This beautiful acrylic/ink on canvas piece was done by our fantastic PhD student Shannon Foster. Below is Shannon's artist statement on the piece: Buldyan (Grandfather Fred Foster) is inspired by my grandfathers body painting. A Dharawal, saltwater, snake man from La Perouse (Sydney), my grandfathers body painting represents the fish an important animal in our saltwater Dreaming and everyday life. This artwork is a stylistic representation of several key cultural icons; the fish skeleton; the movement of water in Gamay (Botany Bay) and the forms of the snake dance that my Grandfather was known for." Buldyan has been created not just to honour my grandfather but also to celebrate the Indigenous visual arts and cultures of the Sydney region that have been long overlooked in favour of Indigenous knowledges from other areas of Australia that are deemed to be the more traditional and authentic Aboriginal cultures. Buldyan contributes to a body of work that has been created to ensure that the very real and thriving Indigenous Sydney cultures and art are shared and preserved for the future." **CAIK has received permission from Shannon Foster to post these images***

04.01.2022 The resurgence of the #BlackLivesMatter movement in Australia and around the world has prompted a cultural reckoningnot least within the media. Drawing on a study of 45 years of news media reporting of Aboriginal activism, this seminar series poses the question: is the media failing in the way it tells Aboriginal stories? How can the media more effectively and fairly represent Aboriginal political worlds? What does the shift from print to online and social media mean for Abo...riginal stories? This Zoom seminar series hosted by Indigenous Land and Justice Research Hub - UTS brings together media researchers, historians, former policy makers and members of the growing cohort of Aboriginal journalists whose work is disrupting the patterns of the past, to discuss these questions. 03.01.2022 This year, in the lead up to Reconciliation week, Rio Tinto detonated explosives and destroyed 46,000 year old caves at the Juunkan Gorge in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The destruction of these important Aboriginal sites unleashed waves of shock, grief and anger across the country. A Joint Standing Committee has been appointed to investigate whether Australian heritage laws protect Indigenous cultural heritage and pressure is mounting on governments to ensure that heritage laws are fit for purpose. Please register below to join the webinar for Friday 18th 1-2:30pm https://utsmeet.zoom.us//register/WN_TEFCUIl0TZKeKKUGfzwOjg
