25.01.2022 CMEMS/PMRG Public Lecture TONIGHT Hi all, just a reminder that there is a CMEMS/PMRG Public Lecture on tonight. Dr Elizabeth Reid will be presenting on "Gendering Political Relationships in Genoese Ceremonial Entries! ... DATE: Monday 15 July 2019 6:00 PM 7:00 PM VENUE: Arts Lecture 10, UWA Arts Building (First Floor) Theres no need to book in advance - there will be plenty of seats available. We look forward to seeing you there! Abstract: Gender is a valuable lens for interpreting the hierarchies at play in political performances and entry iconography. Throughout the preparation, enactment, and chronicling of ceremonial entries during the Italian Wars (1494-1559), cities and their entrants utilised gendered performance and allegory to articulate and negotiate their political relationships. The northern coastal republic of Genoa was a pivotal ally, first for Valois, and then for Hapsburg rulers, and in this capacity was the stage for both triumphant entries and entries-in-arms. Viewed collectively, the respective entries of King Louis XII of France, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and his son Prince Philip of Spain, demonstrate the entered citys subjection to foreign interpretation as well as its flexibility of self-representation. Political interpreters, be they organisers tasked with staging an entry or poets tasked with shaping its cultural memory, drew upon familiar gendered scenarios to place the city in relation to the entrant. In this talk I will suggest that Genoas allegorical identity shifted from that of a dependant mistress, to a ruined woman under the French Valois; and then to a supportive brother, and uncle under the Austro-Spanish Habsburgs.

23.01.2022 Edited by Raphale Garrod (Magdalen College, Oxford) and Yasmin Haskell (University of Western Australia), the fifteenth volume in our Jesuit Studies book serie...s investigates the ways in which the Jesuits employed emotions to change heartsthat is, convert or reformboth in Europe and in the overseas missions. The early modern Society of Jesus excited and channeled emotion through sacred oratory, Latin poetry, plays, operas, art, and architecture; it inflamed young men with holy desire to die for their faith in foreign lands; its missionaries initiated dialogue with and accommodated to non-European cultural and emotional regimes. The early modern Jesuits conducted, in all senses of the word, much of the emotional energy of their times. As such, they provide a compelling focus for research into the links between rhetoric and emotion, performance and devotion, from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. https://brill.com/abstract/title/33846
