17.01.2022 Congratulations to Richard Reeve Thesis Title: Economics of water infrastructure options to address salinity damage in Western Australian rural towns Supervisors: Assoc/Prof Michael Burton and Assoc/Prof Benedict White ... Thesis Abstract: In Australia, clearing of native vegetation has led to groundwater tables rising, bringing with them naturally occurring salts that degrade agricultural land, broader landscapes and rural town infrastructure. This research examined the economic viability of remedial action, applying cost benefit analysis to a case study in the WA Wheatbelt town of Wagin. Findings suggest that groundwater abstraction, desalination and water sale for reuse is economical, although external costs and benefits were not considered. Externalities and property rights are key in explaining how this situation developed, and how we could learn from history and avoid similar situations in the future.

17.01.2022 TRIFLURALIN resistance has disappeared in two populations of ryegrass that are being studied by researchers at the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative. Dr Busi said via Farm Weekly. "My aim was to select for resistance to Sakura and Boxer Gold in ryegrass, but I found that when I sprayed ryegrass with prosulfocarb, which is the main active of Boxer Gold, the subsequent progeny of those plants lost trifluralin resistance."

11.01.2022 Congratulations to Juliana Mendes Monteiro for completing PhD Microbial mats are organosedimentary structures organized as multilayered carpets of microbial communities growing in aquatic environments. Within the microbial mat microenvironment, water chemistry influences the occurrence of different biofunctional groups of microorganisms, which via their metabolic activities can lead to carbonate precipitation and potentially, microbialite formation. In Juliana's PhD resea...rch, metagenomics was used to: (i) compare taxonomic/functional diversity of lithifying and non-lithifying mats from Rottnest Island hypersaline lakes, and (ii) observe the mats response to water chemistry seasonal variation. This study has improved our understanding of the environmental limits for microbialites formation and whether distinctions in the microbial mat community and their functional gene composition influence microbialites accretion.
