19.01.2022 On Sunday, four of the Valued Lives team are heading up to the Kimberley region for a week of workshops in Broome on Peer Networks, Support Coordination, ILO (Independent Living Options) and Microenterprise, plus a 'Shark Tank' session for all those microentrepreneurs in the Kimberley who have ideas around starting up their own small business. The team, consisting of our CEO, Bronia Holyoak, ILC Project Lead, Clare Gibellini, ILC Project Coordinator, Nadege Anderson and Ne...twork Manager of Support Coordination, Paula Elliot, are very much looking forward to connecting with our friends in Broome and sharing information that has the potential to be life-changing for people with disability and their families. This morning on ABC Radio Kimberley's Morning Show, Clare had a conversation with Ed Cowlishaw to explain more about what's happening next week. You can hear Clare and Ed's conversation from 17:39 onwards in the audio clip below and for more information on where and when these workshops are happening, check out the attached flyers. https://www.abc.net.au//programs/mornings/mornings/12653546

19.01.2022 Today we farewelled one of our favourites, Dylan, as he moves onto the next phase of his life and career journey, moving interstate. Dylan worked with us as a Network Advisor for the past 19 months and brought so much good to that role - and more - for Valued Lives and the people he helped in that time. We are going to miss you Dylan! We wish you all the best for your future and much success in your new career!

18.01.2022 This webinar is not to be missed - especially if you are considering starting up a Microenterprise! Check out the information on our Valued Lives Microenterprise Project page!

14.01.2022 Day one in Broome was a day of peer conversations at the Peer Connect Cafe this morning. The Valued Lives team were on hand to have a chat about people’s experiences with NDIS and share their knowledge and experience; helping people to understand their NDIS plans. This afternoon there was an important conversation about independent living options (ILO), with Bronia presenting The Home Stretch; talking about the opportunities and challenges that could be faced when exploring ILO’s and sharing success stories of people who have already achieved their vision of independent living and who now live in a place they can truly call home. A great first day, with lots more good stuff to come for our friends in Broome over the next two days!

12.01.2022 Another big day in Broome for the Valued Lives Team today; a morning of Microenterprise where people came to find out about the VL Microenterprise Project, what a Microenterprise is, what Customised Employment is and possible NDIS funding options. This afternoon’s Shark Tank Session was a great success and the team felt privileged to meet Victor, who drove all the way from Derby to Broome with his support person, to share his Microenterprise dream! Victor, a true entrepre...neur, excited to share his small business ideas in the session and with a fantastic outlook on life - said I was born to live before I die ...and live I will! Do you get the feeling - like we do - that Victor’s Microenterprise is going to be a rip-roaring success??!!

12.01.2022 Our friends at Community Resource Unit shared some important information about the Building Better Homes campaign which is determined to see minimum accessibility standards included in the National Building Code, ensuring the Code meets the needs of all Australians. The next few months will be critical, with Building Ministers due to decide early in 2021 whether to support a minimum access standard for housing in the National Construction Code. This decision will affect hund...reds of thousands of Australians who cannot currently find appropriate housing. You can help by: Please signing and sharing this petition to the Hon Karen Andrews MP, Chair of the Building Ministers Meeting here: https://www.buildingbetterhomes.org.au/take-action.html The petition will be presented to the Building Ministers Forum at the end of February. Their signatures will strengthen our call for change. Please send an email to our Building Ministers to inform them of your support for a minimum access standard for housing in the National Construction Code. Email addresses can be found at the following link: https://www.buildingbetterhomes.org.au/take-action.html You can also write to your local MP and help raise awareness about the importance of mandatory accessibility standards in your local community. By writing to them to let them know why you support changes to the National Building Code, you are helping build momentum for change. You can Download a pre-written letter and post it to your local MP or Email your local MP. here: https://www.buildingbetterhomes.org.au/take-action.html Guidelines on how to address mail or emails to Senators and Members can be found here: https://www.aph.gov.au//guidelines_for_contacting_senators

03.01.2022 Our friends at the Migrant Resource Centre (Northern Tasmania) have released their first podcast! They've been chatting with Jit Rai, a Bhutanese man who migrated from Nepal to Tasmania. You can listen to Jit as he talks about his journey, how his family first realised he had a vison impairment and how he earned the nick name Superman in a Nepali refugee camp.
