Chymotrypsin is an enzyme which digests proteins in the intestine of most mammals. The reaction rate of this enzyme is about 6000 product molecules per minute. 1. Explain why a slight change in the pH as the food passes through the intestine might alter the reaction rate of this enzyme. 2. In industrial processes chymotrypsin may be immobilized onto sheets of film and the substrate allowed to flow over the surface of the film. Explain why the reaction rate of the enzyme in this process is slower than when it is free in solution.
