25.01.2022 Rowan Archer Thank you for your question about how you can get into sailing locally. We think this is an awesome question because at the end of the day this is what we're all about, getting out on the water and having fun. So if there is any chance we can help others enjoy the water then that's what we will do. Question: I've just moved to Melbourne from NZ. I used to sail and race 1 man boats and would love to get back into it. Just saw an add on Face book. Thought I would ...see if anyone knows how I could get back into it. Or might need a crew man. I'm in Chadstone so maybe St kilda would be the closest. Cheers Our thoughts: Check out the local sailing clubs. Albert Sailing Club South Melbourne VIC, Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS) St Kilda VIC, Port Melbourne Yacht Club Port Melbourne VIC, Dockland Sailing School Melbourne - Lessons and Gift Voucher Melbourne VIC Elwood Sailing Club Elwood VIC Williamstown Sailing Club Inc. Williamstown VIC Melbourne Sailing Club Kew VIC Sandringham Yacht Club Sandringham VIC Royal Brighton Yacht Club Middle Brighton VIC Royal Yacht Club of Victoria Williamstown VIC Albert Park Yacht Club (APYC) Albert Park VIC Some of these clubs have sailing school and weekly events/racers and may have an event that suits you, i would also check the notice boards of these clubs and see if any one is looking for a crew. Alternatively, look to social media for any sailing groups in your area that will hold like minded discussions and be able to point you in the right direction. Alternatively, if anyone with a yacht reads this, is in Melbourne region and can accommodate Rowan Archer on a sailing trip, please reach out.

25.01.2022 Found some photos of a restoration done years ago, we had allot of fun with this job. It turned out to be an awesome boat to cruise around in.

24.01.2022 Daniel Balta Thank you for your questions today regarding your soft spot, I would love to take this opportunity to clarify my stand point on this for everybody. "Question: Hi there! I recently bought a 6m boat and once I removed the bench seat I found a small soft spot in the floor about 100mm x 100mm should I be worried about that as the rest of the floor is really solid and transom has no play in it what so ever?? The boat is under cover at my house and was the same with t...he previous owner" Our thoughts: Timber already has moisture in it when you pick it up of the shelf at the hardware store, also your boats floor was likely reinforced with polyester resin which is more water resistant then water proof and separates from the timber very easily because it has little mechanical bonding strength. So, even if your boat was undercover its whole life, moisture can still easily disrupt the timber under traditional manufacturing standards. However, we feel there are the odd occasion when a certain part of the floor will need replacing but the rest of it is still in structural condition. More often, we find that once rot sets in, it spreads through the floor, to the transom and the stringer. So it is best to carefully investigate this situation and seek to repair any soft spots ASAP before it spreads. It is also worth looking into the reason for the moisture penetration. Does your hull have appropriate drainage? Are screw and bolt holes not sealed correctly? Is there damaged fiberglass or worn gelcoat/flowcoat? Identifying the cause of the moisture will help you fix the problem and reduce the possibility of future rot. Thank you for your questions everybody, keep them coming and we will do our best to reply back to all of them.

22.01.2022 FAQ How do I identify if there is timber rot in my boat? The best ways to find out if you boats timber core is starting to degrade, is to:... Firstly, observe it's physical appearance, if it is obvious that there are holes, cracks, damage, loose fibreglass, poorly sealed screws or bolts around an area where water will be able to penetrate, you have a cause for concern. your bilge area will see some water at some point, it could be when it rains, when you wash your boat or when a wave washes over. If you find there are crack and holes in your bilge area, you can rest assured that water is likely to be penetrating your timber. This also applies to your floor, and bellow the water line on the outside of your transom. Secondly, you can sense if you have a rot problem by feel, if you walk on your floor and feel a soft spot of any kind, it is likely water has softened your timber and has started to spread. Finally, if you have an outboard motor, you can check your transom's core by tilting the motor up on its highest tilt, then apply significant pressure on the leg, press down on it and release several times. If you see any movement of the transom, you can be assured the transom has either been replaced incorrectly, or there is a significant amount of rot in the core. If youre buying a boat and the seller refuses to let you inspect these 3 things or try to convince you its normal, I would highly consider walking away.

19.01.2022 Shame for a stunning boat like this to be damaged. Looking forward to getting it back to it's former glory.

19.01.2022 FAQ Can you just do a quick fix for me? One thing all boat owners must realize is that boats (either out on the water or when getting towed) are constantly under pressure. They must be always over engineered when it comes to construction and repairs because you don't know what conditions your boat will endure when it is in the water or on the road.... you must consider that when youre out to sea and something goes wrong, help may be very far away or in some cases not accessible at all. So, for the safety of all my clients, their families and their friends, we have a no quick fix repair policy. We build, repair and charge, taking all worst case scenarios into consideration. This way we can sleep easy at night knowing all of our customers can safely enjoy their time on the water. If you chose to negotiate, always seek the lowest price and the easiest fix with any repairer, please consider if its worth putting yourself and others at risk. Get the job done once, get it done correctly and have fun out on the water.

15.01.2022 This is what happens when you use the wrong resin. Please please take note, polyester, is designed only to bond with itself when it is still in chemical form, not when it's dry. If you need to repair something, replace a transom, floor, bulk head, then use Vinyl Ester or Epoxy only. Do NOT use Polyester or you will be pulling it off by hand in only a short period of time.

04.01.2022 FAQ Why is annual maintenance of your hull important? During our annual maintenance, it is important to inspect the boat for any timber rot, fibreglass damage that may be causing leaks, or any structural issues. Additionally, it is very important to keep your Gel Coat or paint in top condition. A cut and/or polishing for your vessel at least once a year helps extend the life of the top coat and helps hold the value of your vessel.... For our customers who keep their boat in the water full time, it is highly recommended to check the condition of your antifouling, anodes and prop speed at least once a year. This will prevent future problems arising which are far more costly then a simple maintenance job. If your antifouling, anodes, or prop speed is due to be replaced, it should be done without hesitation because failing to do so may cause complex costly issues for the boat owner and dramatically reduce the value of the vessel.
