Australian casualties were, D Coy 17 men KIA and 24 wounded. Plus one soldier from 1 APC Squadron that succumbed to his wounds 9 days later that were susutained during t...he battle Enemy casualties officially was 245 enemy soldiers KIA, a clearing of the battlefield the next day suggested that there was a great deal more enemy KIA than the official numbers and a large untold amount of wounded.

23.01.2022 Royal Australian Navy to receive first Victoria Cross. The PM has recommended the Queen posthumously award World War II hero Edward 'Teddy' Sheean a Victoria Cross, the Navy’s first VC recipient. Sheean, an 18-year-old with less than two years at sea, was an Ordinary Seaman on the minesweeper HMAS Armidale when it came under heavy attack from Japanese aircraft off the coast of what is now Timor-Leste in 1942.... Sheean is recorded as helping launch life rafts before returning to his anti-aircraft gun to fire at enemy aircraft that were strafing his shipmates as they floundered in the water, despite the order having been given to abandon ship. Witness accounts from the day have him firing as the ship sank. He was never seen again. Lest We Forget!!

07.01.2022 Why are they selling poppies, Mummy? Selling poppies in town today. The poppies, child, are flowers of love. For the men who marched away.... But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy? Why not a beautiful rose? Because my child, men fought and died In the fields where the poppies grow. But why are the poppies so red, Mummy? Why are the poppies so red? Red is the colour of blood, my child. The blood that our soldiers shed. The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy. Why does it have to be black? Black, my child, is the symbol of grief. For the men who never came back. But why, Mummy are you crying so? Your tears are giving you pain. My tears are my fears for you my child. For the world is forgetting again..... At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, please Pause, Reflect & Remember those who have paid the Ultimate Sacrifice for the Freedom we have in our beautiful country today, Australia!!!! Lest We Forget

Grant (pictured left) was a 35-year-old born in Nambour, Queensland, who had previously deployed to East Timor and Iraq. Thomas, 21, hailed from Lancashire in the UK and was on his first deployment.
