21.01.2022 *Be careful what you FISH for!* This Australasian Darter was spotted at a local lagoon distressed and repeatedly trying to regurgitate. A concerned observer managed to safely capture the bird and brought it into us for assessment. A mask anaesthesia was required so we could take radiographs of a noticeable bulge in the Darter's throat. Interestingly, we discovered the following... 1. The Darter had swallowed a fish backwards...... 2. The fish had spines on its dorsal fin... 3. The spines had become lodged in the Darters oesophagus... No wonder the poor bird was distressed! Whilst it was still under anaesthetic, our vet managed to extract the fish with surgical forceps and check for any internal damage. Fortunately, the bird was somehow unscathed and able to be recovered and released back to it's lagoon home! (Sadly, not so fortunate outcome for the fish) See more

16.01.2022 Murphy proud to be selected as our third Christmas photo competition winner!

16.01.2022 We had a good laugh at this! But on a serious matter, please be careful with Christmas lights around your pets, chewing an active cord can lead to electrical burns or electrocution - and no-one wants to deal with this kind of bad hair day!

16.01.2022 It's time to talk about the Birds and the Bees! (Well, the birds part, mostly...) It's that time of year again where baby birds will literally be falling at our feet. If you happen to find a healthy looking chick on the ground, PLEASE take some time and check to see if it's parents are still around. If the nest has also fallen on the ground, prop it back up in a nearby tree. If the chick has genuinely been injured or abandoned, only then is it ok to bring the bird to your closest vet for help. If you are ever unsure, call us or FNQ Wildlife Rescue for some over the phone advice

09.01.2022 It's really heating up in Cairns and we need to be vigilant in keeping our furry friends cool. Heat stroke can occur within a matter of minutes and serious situations will be fatal. Signs of heatstroke include; -Heavy panting -Red gums and tongue... -Lethargy -Profuse salivation -Red gums/tongue -Lack of co-ordination -Vomiting/Diarrhoea -Rapid pulse Always have shade, good airflow and fresh water available to your pets, and NEVER leave them unattended in a car. 08.01.2022 Would you believe it, this Sugar Glider was found laying on the ground by a zookeeper at Hartley's Crocodile Adventures - in a crocodile enclosure!! We don't know if the 4 month old glider was trying to show off to his mates or simply lost his way, but we do know he's a very lucky guy! After passing his veterinary health check he's now in the experienced hands of our wildlife carer Montana who will support him while he matures a bit more, and teach him that Sugar Gliders don't make friends with big, scaly reptiles!

07.01.2022 We hope you're feeling as relaxed as Esme to welcome in the weekend! This Basset Hound sure knows how to show off her beautiful ears! Happy Fri-YAY!

06.01.2022 Today is R U OK day Working in the medical field, whether human or veterinary, is an emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausting job. Compassion fatigue and sheer exhaustion can sometimes take over. In Australia, statistics show that a vet will fall to suicide once every 12 weeks. Other high stress professions are sadly much the same. ... We would like to take a moment to recognise the struggles people may experience on a day to day basis, and that there IS help available. Take the time to ask a colleague, a mate, a family member if they are OK, or, let them know if you are NOT. Some helpful sites to look at are; Love your pet love your vet R U OK Day Beyond Blue Official Lifeline Australia And remember, YOU are amazing xx

06.01.2022 Congratulations to Snowy, Coffee, Cookie and Fah, our week 2 Christmas photo winners!

05.01.2022 It is Paralysis Tick Season! Please check your pet daily for ticks and use tick prevention . Signs of tick paralysis As they feed, female paralysis ticks inject a neurotoxin that binds to the point where nerves meet muscles. It usually takes about 3-4 days of feeding before sufficient toxin is injected to cause signs of illness. Initial signs are vague, but progress over the following few days. The most common clinical signs that we see are:... -Vomiting, regurgitating or refusing to eat -A change in voice (bark or meow) -Weakness/ Wobbliness in the back legs -Lack of coordination or inability to climb stairs, (may progress to collapse and paralysis) -Breathing problems panting, coughing or slow laboured breathing As the poisoning progresses, pets become unable to stand and have extreme difficulty breathing. Eventually, untreated tick poisoning will result in death.

05.01.2022 Puppy Kai was so relaxed in our waiting room he squeezed a nap in before seeing our vets for his routine health check! It even looks like he's smiling - what do you think he's dreaming about?!

05.01.2022 Show us your kitten beans! Which one do you have at home?!

05.01.2022 Meet Eywa, the gorgeous Dalmatian puppy with a beautiful name! "Eywa" means 'Sacred Love' in Indian Sanskrit, and is also referred to as 'the guiding force and deity for Pandora' in the movie Avatar. What other special pet name meanings are out there?

04.01.2022 Over the long weekend, we would just like to remind people who go fishing to be mindful of other animals that reside in local creeks and waterways. This Kreftt's Turtle was lucky to be captured after it was seen swimming with a hook in his mouth. It was brought into us and fortunately we were able to remove the hook which hadn't caused any serious damage. So please, be aware of your surroundings, take your rubbish, and look after our native wildlife

03.01.2022 We were all smiles to see Douglas the Devon Rex waltz into our clinic wearing his harness and lead! Does anyone else have a lead trained cat?!
