18.01.2022 Fireworks Fireworks are typically accompanied by times of grand celebration! However, for our pets, fireworks can be a stressful event. We have put together some tips to help your pet deal with the stress of loud noises and fireworks. Keep your pet indoors. The walls of your house will help soften the noise.... Distract your pet from sudden and loud noises by putting on the TV or radio. Move fragile items to a different room. If your pet does get spooked, you don't want them accidentally injuring themselves. Avoid paying them too much attention This can be difficult to do; however, as long as your pet is not endangering themselves, it can be the best way to reassure them that there is nothing to be concerned about. Make sure their microchip details are up to date. If your pet does somehow manage to escape, it is important that they can be identified. If you want more tips or advice on how to help your pet cope with fireworks and loud noises, speak to one of our vets. Contact Hume Animal Hospital on 02 6025 4088 or Melrose Animal Hospital on 02 6056 1544 for an appointment. Plus don't forget we have online booking available below!

07.01.2022 Heartworm is transmitted to dogs by infected mosquitoes causing heartworms to develop in the vessels of the heart and lungs. The signs of the disease can be coughing, exercise intolerance, breathing difficulties and sometimes collapse during exercise due to heart failure. Prevention is best from 12 weeks of age Monthly products come in the form of an oral medication or a spot on liquid and must be continued for their whole life. An injection can be given at 3 months, 6 mont...hs and 12 months of age and then given yearly for the remainder of their life. If your pet has not started heartworm prevention by 6 months of age they will require a blood test to determine if they are incubation or carrying heartworm. Cats can be affected by heartworm, and it can be a fatal disease. However the level of cats affected in the area is currently unknown and considered to be low. Prevention by a monthly chewable or a spot on prevention are available. See more
