20.01.2022 We’re rolling on with our series of stories celebrating 20 years of putting your fishing licence fees to work and this week we’re reflecting on these ripping re...efs! Throughout the next few months we’ll look back at some of the significant projects your licence fees have funded over the years. We’ve already touched on the history of the Recreational Fishing Licence Trust Account, turning Eildon into a Murray cod mecca and the contribution of Geelong’s local legend John Hotchin. This week it’s all about these recreational fishing reef modules off the Surf Coast. In 2015, artificial reef modules were installed off Torquay, to boost fish habitat and attract popular species like kingfish and all the baitfish they love to eat! The purpose-built reef modules are about 3 kilometres offshore in 25 metres of water between Breamlea and Torquay. The huge structures weigh up to 20 tonnes each and are 4 metres high as you can imagine installing them wasn’t the easiest job in the world. But with some very heavy machinery and a bit of ingenuity, the job was on! You can watch a video of them being installed via our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDxTadNBc8M Since deployment, the reefs have attracted all kinds of marine creatures, providing plenty of chances for fish to head in for a feed. What’s more, the reef modules have become anchor points for our Fish Aggregating Devices in recent summers, further boosting their capacity to deliver great fishing. The bright yellow buoys are attached by specialist divers ahead of the peak fishing season to attract pelagic game fish to the area. How good! 07.01.2022 A vehicle has ended up in Mordialloc Creek in a boat ramp mishap. Pictures provided to the Herald Sun show the SUV submerged in the waterway this morning. It's ...since been pulled out. It's understood the mishap occurred when the vehicle was being reversed down the ramp, which is off Governor Rd. Police were at the scene. There was a large number of onlookers. Nobody was hurt.
