Thanks to Porepunkah CFA Parks Vic for their assistance at Eurobin Falls.

19.01.2022 Our "neighbours" are holding their annual raffle. In COVID times, selling tickets to the public can be difficult. It may take a little more effort to purchase some, but we would encourage everyone to do so.

19.01.2022 Watch Out This Weekend The BOM have forecast possible thunderstorms bringing damaging wind gusts and/or heavy rainfall across most of Victoria on Thursday, possibly becoming severe across the parts of the Northern Country and North East weather districts. ... With many Victorians heading to the region’s magnificent camping and holiday spots this New Year’s long weekend, SES urges locals and visitors to be Storm Ready. To be Storm Ready, follow these two steps to storm safety: 1. Set up your campsite or caravan well away from trees and branches as these can fall unexpectedly. 2. Secure and tie down your camping gear and bring loose items inside your tent or caravan ready for the forecast gusty winds and heavy rain. So, if you are camping or holidaying this long weekend, you should: Check the Vic Emergency app and local forecasts for any warnings or updates. If you haven't already, set a Watch Zone to include your camp location on the VicEmergency app so you receive any warnings. If a flood warning is issued for your riverside campsite leave before the water starts to rise and move your camp to higher ground. If you need help during a storm or flood emergency call SES on 132 500. If your emergency is life threatening, call 000. Be STORM READY this weekend.

17.01.2022 H A P P Y N E W Y E A R To the residents of the Alpine Shire, we wish you all a year of happiness, whether it be in great events and achievements or in life's simple pleasures. After a year of threat and menace from bushfires and a virus, of disruption to normal life beyond anything we could have imagined, we are looking forward to a calmer, more settled year.... Thanks to all our members, and to members of other SES Units, who managed to maintain their commitment to the community through responding to requests for help and by continuing to maintain and develop their skills, despite the uncertainty of the times. Thanks to everyone with whom we have worked during the year: the other emergency services - VICPOL, Ambulance, CFA, FRV other SES units - Beechworth, Myrtleford, Kinglake, Tallangatta the other organisations involved in supporting the community during the major emergencies - Forest Fire Management, DELWP, the Army Reserve, Red Cross, the Alpine Shire, VicRoads. -

16.01.2022 A late night call to assist ambulance in rescuing six people stuck in snow on the top of Mount Bogong. Although they were well equipped, they were caught by bad weather and were unable to make their way down the Staircase Spur. They set up two tents, one of which became damaged, and spent a cold night at the highest point in Victoria. Bright SES, Falls Creek Ski Patrol and Police Search and Rescue responded, going in to Camp Creek car park at the bottom of Mount Bogong on roa...ds covered in ice and snow. Chains were fitted when the snow deepened and became slippery. Falls Creek SES supported the rescue with logistical support back at Mount Beauty. In the morning, three Ski Patrollers, 4 SES and 4 Search and Rescue Police, assisted by the police helicopter, located the six people on the very top of Mount Bogong. The helicopter was unable to pick the party up as, although the early morning was clear and sunny, clouds came in quickly. The party was escorted down the Eskdale Spur to Camp Creek car park and then driven to their vehicles at Mountain Creek. Another long overnight task, involving over 100 hours of SES and around 40 hours of Ski Patrol time. See more

12.01.2022 Get Flood Ready. The State Emergency Service is preparing for floods this Spring, and asking every community member to take notice now and Get Flood Ready. The Bureau of Meteorology outlook includes potential for La Niña weather, bringing heavy Spring rains to SE Australia and a higher risk of floods in the already wet North East and Goulburn Broken rainfall catchments.... Adding extra risk, areas affected by last Summer’s bushfires respond differently as heavy rains can trigger dangerous landslides on burnt ground, and can be more prone to flash flooding. Neil Payn, Acting Assistant Chief Officer of the VICSES North East Region (ACO Payn) said Indications from the BOM are for floods similar to the major floods of 2016, possibly even as damaging and widespread as 2010 where if a similar flood happens, hundreds of homes may be flooded above floor level, many evacuations, roads and bridges flooded or damaged and power, drinking water, sewage and other essential services interrupted."

10.01.2022 A rescue just before Christmas ... Young Marley had got stuck under a building. With some shovel work and lots of encouragement for Marley from her family, we were able to successfully extricate her from her predicament.

09.01.2022 Today is Blue Ribbon Day, which coincides with National Police Remembrance Day. On Blue Ribbon Day, Bright SES would like to thank all those police officers across Victoria and the rest of Australia who protect and serve their communities. In particular we would like to note the service of the local police in the Alpine Shire. As an SES Unit, we are privileged to work with such committed police officers. Their commitment to this community makes our work more effective and more efficient.

09.01.2022 Stage 3 Restrictions in Rural Victoria In case people are wondering how life will change in the Alpine Shire ...

09.01.2022 The Bright Unit has been turning out regularly over January, for a variety of tasks - road crashes, mountain bike injuries, trees down, etc. This week we have had three "tree down" calls - one for a tree branch on a vehicle in a caravan park, another for a branch on a caravan annexe, and the last for a tree that brought down a power supply line at the Scout Hall. On Tuesday two members headed over to Stanley to support Beechworth Unit in the rescue of a person from a vehicle down a steep embankment. Given the rain that day, it was not surprising that the ropes returned wet and muddy and in need of a wash. Some lateral thinking was needed to make a drying rack for two 200m ropes.

08.01.2022 Training last night was held down by the Ovens River. We had two groups out - one at Porepunkah doing some high angle skills practice and one in Bright working with sandbags and the water pump. It was pleasing to have such a good attendance.

08.01.2022 With today’s rain, it is a good time to bring to your attention that SES is preparing for a very wet Spring. Heavy rains and floods are likely in North East Victoria We know a flood is the last thing Victoria needs in 2020, but we are asking every community member to take notice now and Get Flood Ready while we have time to prepare. Over the next few weeks, we will be posting information to help you prepare for floods (and other emergencies).

07.01.2022 The number of deer around the local area is increasing. The reduced amount of traffic may be encouraging them to be 'bolder' and their level of activity during daylight hours is beginning to pose a risk for drivers, particularly near plantations and wooded areas. This collision occurred on Wednesday afternoon. The driver suffered bruising and shock, while the deer picked itself up and fled into the pines. Be careful on the roads ....

05.01.2022 There is a severe weather warning for the North East, including the Ovens and Kiewa Valleys.

04.01.2022 Our colleagues in Melbourne continue to support their communities in this difficult time.

04.01.2022 In case anyone is planning on travelling to Geelong via the Ring Road or using the West Gate Freeway in the near future, there are some significant road works which may affect your journey. More details at the website www.bigbuild.vic.gov.au

02.01.2022 Flash Flooding The heavy rain across Victoria today, along with what is forecast for tomorrow, may result in flash flooding in some areas. Flash flooding can occur quickly, and you may not receive an official warning. ... We would like to remind people to never attempt to walk or drive through flood water. We know the number one cause of historical flood fatalities is from people trapped or swept way in their vehicles. It can take just 15cm of water to float a small car. That’s the height of an average pen. If you ever come across water over the road, turn around and seek an alternative route. Also, note that there is an added risk locally due to the fires earlier this year. With lack of ground cover and unstable dead trees, the areas affected by last Summer’s bushfires respond differently as heavy rains can trigger dangerous landslides on burnt ground. Latest weather warnings available via the Bureau of Meteorology website: www.bom.gov.au/vic/warnings/

02.01.2022 A major landslide has blocked the Great Alpine Road near Ensay. Check the Vicroads website for updates. Photo courtesy of SES Tambo Valley Unit.

01.01.2022 Given the upcoming long weekend and the likelihood of people going camping, we thought this is a valuable piece of advice.

01.01.2022 The Great Alpine Road near Ensay has reopened. Take care when travelling. Check the VicRoads website for updates.
