21.01.2022 Two Sentenced to Death for Killing of 24-Year-Old Maryam in Egypt’s Maadi Egyptian Streets November 26, 2020 The Cairo Criminal Court sentenced two men to death for the killing of a 24-year-old woman earlier this year in Cairo’s Maadi.... The death sentences are preliminary and will be confirmed after Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawki Allam either approves or rejects the punishment, a non-binding legal tradition in Egypt for all death sentences in the country. In a statement to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Hisham Amer, the lawyer acting on behalf of 24-year-old Maryam Mohamed’s family, said that the death sentence is a victory for all Egyptian girls. Amer added that Maryam’s family were relieved after the ruling. The two defendants, along with a third perpetrator, were accused by prosecutors of deliberately killing Maryam Mohamed after an attempt to steal her handbag. A statement released by the Egyptian Public Prosecution in October revealed that Maryam died from sustaining head injuries after being dragged by the defendants’ car. According to the Public Prosecution, Maryam was wearing the handbag and as a result of attempts to steal it, she was dragged by the defendants’ car until she hit a parked car, leaving her with serious injuries. An ambulance arrived 30 minutes after the incident, following which Maryam died. The statement added that a firearm and another weapon were found in the possession of the defendants. The third perpetrator referred to in the Public Prosecution’s statement was not present at the scene of the crime. Instead, the third man was charged with assisting the two defendants by providing them with his vehicle for the purposes of carrying out the crime. At the time of the killing in October, initial local media reports had indicated Maryam was killed after resisting sexual harassment and assault. This stirred outrage across Egypt, with many shedding light on the issue of sexual crimes which continue to occur widely in Egypt. Age: 35 Tour: 11 years Badge: 83 Military Veteran Incident Details Cause: Gunfire Incident Date: Monday, October 16, 2006 Weapon Gun: Unknown type Offender: Sentenced to death Officer Michael Briggs succumbed to a gunshot wound inflicted the previous morning when he and his partner responded to a domestic disturbance call. Both officers were on bicycle patrol and they located one of the participants in an alley at the corner of Lake and Lincoln Streets. Officer Briggs was shot in the head as he was questioning the male subject. Officer Briggs was transported to Elliott Hospital, where he remained until succumbing to the wound. The suspect fled the state but was arrested later in the day while hiding in his grandmother's home in Dorchester, Massachusetts. In an odd twist, it was discovered that the suspect was the same man whose life Officer Briggs had saved in 2003 following a shooting. The suspect was convicted in November 2008 of Capital Murder and sentenced to death. He is the only inmate on New Hampshire's death row. The last New Hampshire death sentence was in 1959. Officer Briggs was a US Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Manchester Police Department for 5 years. He had previously served as a correctional officer for the Hillsborough County Department of Corrections for 6 years. During his time as a correctional officer he had also served as a part-time officer with the Epsom Police Department. Officer Briggs had previously served with the United States Marine Corps and is survived by his wife, two sons, parents, and three sisters. A local court in Jhang has sentenced to death a man for raping and murdering a 10-year-old girl last year. Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Khizar Hayat Minhas found Asif Habib guilty of kidnapping, raping and murdering the minor and gave out additional sentences of life and 10 years. Habib was told to pay a fine of Rs0.2 million, and Rs0.5 million to the minor’s family. Habib, who is the minor’s neighbour, lured the child into coming inside his house in November last year, then raped and murdered her. He put the body in a bag and disposed it off at a deserted place. Police found her body on November 19. Investigation had revealed that she was strangulated to death. The verdict described her actions as extremely cruel and cold-blooded. The 30-year-old woman surnamed Wu () raised an eight-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son on her own after a divorce. After an argument with her brother and his wife, Wu took her children to a motel in New Taipei City’s Wugu District (), where she attempted to suffocate the children with pillows, but failed as they fought back, the court filing said. Two days later, Wu drugged her children with sleeping pills and strangled them to death, it said. She then wrote a text message to the children’s father, saying: I’m gone. I’m going to be with the kids, or they will feel lonely, the filing said. Wu’s ex-husband rushed to the motel, where he found his children dead and Wu lethargic after taking sleeping pills, anti-depressants and alcohol. Wu was taken to hospital and treated. During the trial, Wu confessed to committing the murders, saying that she felt overwhelmed with the burden of caring for two children on her own. These seven years, people looked down on me. I was left alone with the pressure and was not able to find a steady job, the filing cites her as saying. I have been caring for them 24 hours a day, without any freedom for myself. In the verdict, the court said that Wu committed the extremely cruel and cold-blooded murders because of stress and dissatisfaction with her personal circumstances, and failed to show remorse for her crimes. Despite acknowledging the ongoing debate over capital punishment in Taiwan, the court said that it had the responsibility to uphold the inherent right to life guaranteed to every child by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. I know when it comes to Nancy Grace, you either love her or hate her...but, that’s not importan...t in this particular situation...she has a show, called Injustice with Nancy Grace, that comes on the OXYGEN Channel on Thursdays @ 9pm. Next Thursday, November 5th, the episode is about Chris Newsom and Channon Christian. I knew Chris, I never had the pleasure of meeting Channon, but even if you never met either of them, they are OUR victims...they were brutally murdered in our city. We watched their families grieve day in and day out and they became everyone’s child, sister, brother or friend...bc it could have happened to any one of us. Although, it’s been a long time and we think we know everything, even if we do, I ask that everyone watch, as a way to pay tribute to both Channon and Chris and to their families... Their families have been put through hell and back so many times, it’s hard to fathom...and not just through the loss of their children, but by corruption among numerous other things, in our justice system...or as Nancy Grace would call it, INJUSTICE If you can’t watch it live, record it. Do it in their memory and as what isn’t much, but can at least serve as a tiny way, to allow us all, to show the families, that we STILL care and we will NEVER forget these two beautiful individuals, that were: children of loving parents, a brother, a sister, a friend and family to so many and most notably of all...they were: INNOCENT ... just having barely stepped out of childhood into the beginning of adulthood, where they were trying to start their lives and ended up never having a chance.
