25.01.2022 No one should be made to feel broken because of their sexuality or gender identity, and that's why the Victorian Greens welcome the news that harmful sexuality and gender identity conversion practices will soon be outlawed across the state. This follows years of calls from the Greens and LGBTQA+ survivors to stamp out the bigoted practices, and we look forward to voting in support of the state government’s bill next year. Today is a win for equality and a day to celebrate wi...th the rainbow community right across our state.

23.01.2022 In a historic vote this week, the Victorian Parliament backed our motion calling for a #GreenNewDeal sending a clear message that our state's economic recovery from COVID-19 should invest in jobs that also help solve the big issues we face, like the climate emergency and rising inequality. The upcoming 2020 state budget is a chance to reimagine our economy and build a better future for all Victorians. Learn more about our Green New Deal: greens.org.au/vic/gnd

23.01.2022 Interesting coincidence!

22.01.2022 Today's state budget was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rebuild Victoria for the better and we're pleased to see the Victorian Government use this budget to make ambitious investments in social housing, environmental restoration, renewables and a big battery, energy efficiency for Victorian homes, and jobs in the caring economy. These unprecedented investments resemble policies the Greens took to the 2018 state election and follow months of campaigning for a Green New Deal. They are also some of the most significant steps towards climate and social justice in Victoria’s history.

21.01.2022 Greens on council have been leading local action on climate change all across Victoria. In the last four years, Greens councillors have: Declared the world-first climate emergency from a council Set zero net emissions targets Joined the climate emergency movement... Led 48 councils to switch to 100% renewable electricity Installed solar farms on council buildings Establishing projects like a ‘Virtual Power Plants’ Provided 1000s of subsidised solar panels to homeowners Acted on energy efficiency policies, like LED street lights There's more work to do. Vote for a Greens councillor this October who will refuse donations from vested interests like the fossil fuel industry, and work hard for real local climate action https://greens.org.au/vic/finder

18.01.2022 Today's state budget was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rebuild Victoria for the better. It's positive to see the Victorian Government use this budget to make long overdue investments such as: A big investment in community and affordable housing More renewables, and energy efficiency for Victorian homes... A big battery near Geelong Extra funding for teachers, and health and mental health workers These unprecedented investments resemble policies the Greens took to the 2018 state election and follow the months of campaigning we’ve done, together, for a Green New Deal. With your support, we've successfully put these policies on the political agenda, leading the way for some of the most significant steps towards climate and social justice in Victoria’s history. With many budget initiatives aligning with our proposals, this is a testament to the progressive ideas and campaigns run by the Greens and community advocates over the past few years. This shows the importance of strong Greens voices in your state parliament.

16.01.2022 Greens local government candidates proudly joined 630+ communities across Australia to speak out against Morrison’s dangerous gas plans. Gas is as dirty as coal. We need a renewables revolution! Powerful work from School Strike 4 Climate today demanding Morrison #FundOurFutureNotGas

16.01.2022 The Victorian Labor government's proposed tax on people who drive electric cars isn't just a backwards step for climate action it's also a dangerous step towards more privatisation.

15.01.2022 This morning, we brought thousands of voices with us to the Victorian Parliament look closely at our Green New Deal sign! Thousands of you joined the call and signed our petition for a Green New Deal our plan to reimagine Victoria’s economy to look after both people and planet. Thank you! The Government will be spending billions of dollars in today’s budget and making major decisions about who will be looked after, as it looks to lift Victoria out of the COVID-19 recessi...on. But we can rebuild even better than before by creating jobs that also promote equality and take action on climate change. This means big investment in public housing, so everyone has a safe place to call home. Or in publicly-owned renewable energy, so Victoria can reach 100% clean energy. All of these things are possible. Victoria recently made history when our parliament became the first in the country to support a Green New Deal. And in the last couple of weeks, the Government made a number of pre-budget announcements that align with our plan. We're already making significant steps towards building a fairer Victoria that leads the way on climate action. Thank you so much for being a part of this movement for a Green New Deal.

12.01.2022 Today is World AIDS Day. And I have some good news, next year the Federal Government will subsidise HIV treatment for temporary residents in Australia (i.e. pe...ople who are ineligible for Medicare). I've spent 20 years struggling to obtain HIV drugs for people without Medicare, a dilemma familiar to others working in this field. When I stopped working as a doctor, our clinic had well over 100 patients without Medicare cards receiving free medication via a number of clunky "compassionate access" schemes from pharmaceutical companies. Shortly after I started treating HIV patients, about 20 years ago, I met a woman from PNG who developed AIDS symptoms while visiting Australia for a conference. She was about to be sent home with a plastic bag of pills, which would keep her alive for a few weeks longer and that would be the end. I wrote to an Indian company manufacturing a three-drugs-in-one pill in defiance of patent laws, which would have cost $1000 a month here. They sent me six months of treatment for a couple of hundred dollars. I transferred her care to her doctor in PNG and continued the supply for a year or two until she was able to obtain a local supply. Due to international NGO efforts that little Indian company was now shipping by the container-load. But people remaining here without Medicare had less access to treatment than she did in PNG. Private cover usually excludes HIV treatments. We got patients who were changing treatments, to keep their unused pills and bring them in. Pharmacists and managers disapproved of the little plastic bags of pills lying around in filing cabinet drawers. It wasn't legal but it kept people alive. Sydney's Kirby Institute set up a supply scheme and used it as an observational study. In a way it was a free supply disguised as research. It was great, but soon it was full. Then the drug companies started compassionate supply. But it was the lobbying by the Kirby, the National Association of People with HIV Australia, and others in the community that did the trick. I also raised it in state parliament last year and with then Health Minister Mikakos earlier this year. And finally I can say thank-you Greg Hunt and everyone who pushed for this change.

11.01.2022 "I never thought that I’d end up in politics. It’s not a career choice it’s just something that happened, a continuation of the fight for justice for our people and for people who don’t have a voice. In this country, poor people, women, the land, and the water they don’t have a voice either. So to be the first Indigenous Senator for Victoria is incredible. But it also shows how far behind Australia is in ensuring that Indigenous voices are heard in the federal parliament." ICYMI: A must read interview with Lidia Thorpe in Jacobin magazine.

11.01.2022 Fantastic to see this campaign backed by Aus Post

10.01.2022 Some more excellent news - Councillor Jonathon Marsden has been elected Mayor of Hobsons Bay! This is Jonathon’s second term on Council, and his second time serving as Mayor. Hobsons Bay City Council has a lot to look forward to.

10.01.2022 Today the Greens moved a motion calling on the Victorian Parliament to support a Green New Deal and it passed! This is big. This is the first time that any parliament in Australia has voted in support of a Green New Deal. By passing our motion, the Victorian Parliament sent a clear message that our state's economic recovery plan from COVID-19 must take action to solve the big issues we face, like the climate emergency and rising inequality.... The upcoming State Budget is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine our economy for the better. Now that the Parliament has backed our plan for a Green New Deal, we want to make sure the government follows through in the Budget when it's handed down in two weeks on 24 November. We can create a new vision for Victoria, a new way forward. A Green New Deal.

09.01.2022 Gunnai and Gunditjmara woman Lidia Thorpe was the first Aboriginal woman elected to Victorian Parliament, and the first Aboriginal woman to become a Senator for Victoria. Tune in from 5pm AEDT today and watch Lidia give her historic first speech to the federal parliament.

08.01.2022 Yesterday, the upper house in the Victorian Parliament passed our motion calling for a Green New Deal for Victoria. This means that parliament sent a clear message ahead of the 2020 state budget that Victoria's economic recovery from COVID-19 should invest in jobs and industries that also help solve the big issues we face, like the climate emergency and rising inequality. We can create jobs through:... Building publicly-owned renewable energy and storage projects A big build of public housing to ensure everyone has a safe place to call home Boosting employment in health, education and community services And more! 08.01.2022 We all want a recycling system that keeps our parks, rivers and oceans clean, and our wildlife free from the threat of plastic. Did you know your local Greens councillor has been working to do just that? Here's a short list of what they've achieved in the last four years: Introduced a four bin system to increase recycling Brought in green bins for food waste composting... Protected our waterways with bans on single-use plastics Resurfaced roads with 90% recycled materials including tyres Supported and introduced zero waste strategies Opposed dirty energy from burning waste Lead waste solutions that State Government has followed Sustainability budget increases of up to 400% This October, vote for a Greens councillor who will revolutionise recycling in your neighbourhood. 08.01.2022 The Morrison Liberal Government proudly wants to drill for more polluting gas. But did you know: The Victorian Labor Government is also expanding gas drilling across Victoria. Since March, the Victorian Labor Government has lifted the hard-won ban on gas drilling across Victoria, opened our oceans to destructive new gas drilling and pushed ahead with plans for a new gas import mega-ship in a beautiful wetland in Westernport. Yet Victoria has everything we need to stop using g...as, and doing it as part of a renewables-led recovery would tackle climate change AND create thousands of jobs. That’s why we have a plan to get Victoria off gas: Grants to help households replace gas heating with cheaper electric heat-pumps Retrofit manufacturing plants so they’re run on clean energy New publicly owned big batteries and energy storage Build large-scale wind and solar, and fix up the energy grid New laws to ensure new homes are all-electric, not connected to gas Stop gas drilling, onshore and offshore, across Victoria Stop the Westernport gas mega-ship Join the campaign to get Victoria off gas greens.org.au/vic/campaigns/victoria-says-no-gas

07.01.2022 The evidence is clear: to create a fair housing system that helps those in the greatest need, we need to invest in public housing. Yet the Victorian Government mostly avoided the opportunity to do this in the state budget. The Greens will continue our push for a big build of public housing which would create jobs, tackle the homelessness crisis and cut the growing public housing waiting list.... Every Victorian should have a safe, secure place to call home.

07.01.2022 Greens councillors have been keeping our neighbourhoods green and liveable for people and animals alike. Created new dog parks and open spaces Enhanced local environment with new parks and sanctuaries Enacted biodiversity policies to protect flora and fauna Created and expanded safe bike lanes and trails Built new footpaths and coastal walks Introduced active transport strategies This October, vote for a Greens councillor who grow green, active neighbourhoods for everyone. 03.01.2022 Greens councillors have been working hard to support our vibrant high streets, celebrate local arts and tourism, and create world-class libraries. In the last four years, Greens on council have achieved so much, including: Making developers pay a levy for community projects Reworking community spaces to enhance dining and socialising... Funding sports, museums, libraries, markets and more Supporting artists with strategies, festivals, and mural walls Introducing a live music strategy Tightening donations policies to ensure councils serve everyone Leading ambitious anti-gambling policies Protecting heritage sites and created new community hubs This October, vote for a Greens councillor who will rebuild a thriving local economy. 02.01.2022 We don’t need to wait for climate action at a state or federal level. We can lead solutions from a local level that tackle the climate crisis while building thriving local economies at the same time That’s why your vote in this Local Government election will be more important than ever. Unlike other candidates, Greens Councillors don’t take donations from vested interests like big property developers, pokies or the fossil fuel industry. They'll work hard to achieve thing...s like: Helping Council source renewable energy, Changing Council fleet to electric vehicles Bringing down people's bills through solar bulk-buying And so much more! 02.01.2022 The 2020 state budget makes record, and long overdue, investments that will help to rebuild a better Victoria for everyone such as in affordable housing, renewable energy, and jobs in the caring economy. These investments resemble policies the Greens took to the 2018 state election and follow the months of campaigning we’ve done together for a Green New Deal. But while this is a once-in-a-generation budget, it’s important to ensure this isn't one-time support. The big issue...s we face like homelessness, climate change and job insecurity won’t vanish after one budget. Join your Victorian Greens MPs for an online budget briefing tomorrow at 1pm, where we'll share with you how the budget measures up against our Green New Deal and what needs to happen next. You'll also have the opportunity to ask questions and join in on the discussion! RSVP to attend and we'll send you the zoom link for tomorrow: greens.org.au/vic/budgetbriefing See you there!
