16.01.2022 THOMAS'S STORY Thomas presented to our youth service, Passages Youth Engagement Hub Peel at the age of 19 experiencing homelessness and struggling with depression, self-harm and heavy drug and alcohol use. He told staff that he had been squatting in an abandoned house and hadn’t had much sleep over the past few days but found it very confronting to say anything else.... After being given an introduction to the services and support Passages could offer him, Thomas continued to visit over the following days and slowly found the courage to engage in discussions about the trauma he had experienced growing up and how he came to be homeless. Until the age of 10 Thomas was living with his mother and her partner, but was removed and placed into Department for Child Protection (DCP) care after experiencing emotional and physical abuse from his mother’s partner. Unfortunately the DCP care arrangement was unsuccessful and Thomas returned home to his mother at age 13. At this time his mother was struggling with alcohol and drug use and was unable to function on a daily basis nor ensure the security and safety of Thomas. At times Thomas was left alone with strangers which led to him experimenting with drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism. A year later, Thomas was again removed from his mother and placed under the care of DCP. After being placed under DCP care again, Thomas began to struggle with the arrangement and ran away, starting a cycle of homelessness and sleeping rough. With the assistance of the staff at Passages, Thomas was able to receive the appropriate help to address his alcohol and drug use along with counselling to help with his battle with depression and self-harm. This led Thomas to make positive steps towards his recovery and creating a better life for himself. Moving into secured accommodation and attending regular counselling sessions as well as successfully completed training in hospitality obtaining a White Card certification. www.passages.org.au Passages Youth Engagement Hubs are a joint venture between Vinnies WA and Perth Rotary - Western Australia

11.01.2022 PAIGE'S STORY Paige was just 15 when she found herself all alone no one to turn to, nowhere to go. My mother was diagnosed with leukaemia when I was 13, and she passed away when I was 15. I had no family support. I couldn’t go to my father’s because my stepmother was abusive. I used to come back from their house traumatised. I didn’t have any contact with other family members. I was 15, on my own, living on the streets.... A violent and unstable childhood, a series of abusive relationships and subsequent depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder made even just surviving a huge feat. Paige kept going to school but could barely focus. A strong student up until then, she started falling behind, but kept quiet because she was embarrassed to tell anyone what was going on that her family had left her to fend for herself. She had to fight to keep herself afloat, working in different jobs from the age of 16, and couch surfing with friends when she could, and sleeping rough when there was no one to turn to. All because of circumstances completely beyond her control. Struggling to cope with being abandoned by her father and the stress of living on the street, Paige dealt with the traumas she continued to experience as best she could. After some ups and downs Paige had a nervous breakdown, and was admitted to hospital. When she was discharged, she again found herself with nowhere to go. Thankfully, while Paige was in hospital she found out about Vinnies who provided immediate support from helping her cover ongoing medical costs, through to finding her a place to live. Without Vinnies, I really do not know where I’d be today. Vinnies has saved my life. Until the end of the year SUPRÉ will donate all proceeds for their Supre Foundation products between Vinnies, Food Bank and Beyond Blue, with WA Vinnies donations going toward supporting Western Australians affected by domestic and family violence through our specialist support services.
