24.01.2022 Thought for the week: How important is it that Art teachers are also artists? Of course we need to be proficient in the skills we are teaching, but how different are the roles of art teacher and artist? Do artists make better teachers? Can an art teacher be any good if they are also not creating and exhibiting their own work? https://theconversation.com/do-arts-teachers-have-to-be-art

24.01.2022 The 2021 Adelaide Fringe Schools Poster Design Competition is on again. This is a great opportunity for Primary and Secondary Art/Design students to get involved in with prizes including their work being featured on the Schools Booking guide, a spot in the Schools Poster Competition exhibition and a performance by a 2021 Fringe artist for their school. Head to the webpage for more details.

22.01.2022 From us at VAESA to our member: We have decided that VAESA will not be running our Annual Conference this year due to the uncertainty around COVID-19. In some ways this was an easy decision, as our fundamental concern is the health and wellbeing of all, and yet it is also heartbreaking, as our largest event for the year provides us all with much needed Professional Development and Networking.... Although the conference was scheduled for 31/7-1/8, by which time we may be back at school, we have (understandably) been unable to confirm presenters and venues. Additionally, we would need to begin selling tickets shortly, and with the current uncertainty coupled with many schools and families struggling financially, we appreciate that approving attendance to our conference is not going to be a priority for many schools. We will hold our next conference at a similar time in 2021. Thank you to everyone who has submitted applications to present. We will continue to contact you and develop this for next year. What will we be doing instead? Although we are not hosting a conference this year, we are still working to provide support to teachers and opportunities for networking. To do this we want to: Add a Webpage to our website of curated teaching resources for Visual Arts and Design from R - 12. This will be a combination of our own resources, resources collected from other organisations and resources from our members - you! We will review each one to ensure that it is aligned with the Australian Curriculum, and that we are offering diversity. If you have resources you would be happy to share, or know of resources that you think should be included, please send them to us at [email protected]. Continue to run our primary and secondary network meetings, using zoom rather than face to face meetings in schools. We are very aware of the concerns regarding the security of zoom, and we have adjusted our settings accordingly and are confident in the changes that zoom is making to address these concerns. Create regular meetings to support pre-service and early career teachers who will be struggling in this teaching situation to either plan their classes or complete their teacher training. In lieu of our planned country visits this year, we will run specific online sessions for country teachers through zoom. Offer specific support to year 12 teachers through liaising with SACE and organising regular online meetings to address specific concerns and moderation opportunities. I am sure that like us you have been feeling a combination of stress and anxiety for ourselves and our students. Know that you are not alone. This is going to be a process of trial and error, and the more that we can support each other to work through difficulties the stronger we will all be and the better off our students will be in the long run. Please continue to contact us with ideas, concerns or just to vent!

22.01.2022 Good morning, If you are interested in attending our secondary network meeting , Wednesday 1st July 7pm Parkside hotel numbers are limited to 12 therefore please indicate that you are going. See you there!

21.01.2022 Across the world, precautions are being taken to protect us from novel coronavirus COVID-19. It is with this in mind that we sadly have to cancel this years 2020 Art & Design Student Forum. This has not been an easy decision but we can not ensure the distance of 1.5 metres between guests and our event caters to over 500 participants on the day. ... Some presenters and guests were traveling from interstate and country locations so we wanted to make this decision swiftly to help everyones planning. VAESA is committed to working with the speakers to make their presentations available online for teachers to access in the future. All ticket sales to the event will be refunded through EducatorsSA. Thank you for your understanding.

20.01.2022 Did you have a year 12 student this year who balanced the uncertainty of 2020 with the demands of the subject and produced exemplary work. Would their experiences benefit the class of 2021 as they begin their journey through Visual Art and Design? For 2021 VAESA has decided to film student presentations and have these resources available to members for access with their students in early term 1. Filming of the Forum will happen in 2 sessions in December/January at Trinity Col...lege Gawler and in a central city location (yet to be decided). To nominate a student please use the google form available at https://forms.gle/DdQ36j2fsV4SfupR7 . Time is running out to have your nominations in! Please process the form by the 4th of December to ensure there is plenty of time to organise a time to film sessions.
