24.01.2022 A 'mutant enzyme that eats plastic'? Interesting and hopeful.

23.01.2022 For children - magnesium citrate or glycinate powder or add Magnesium salts (Epsom salts) or Mg flakes to their bath.

22.01.2022 Latest stats are 1 in 68 children in U.S. with ASD. This study looked at the contribution that heavy metal concentrations in a childs body may have on developing ASD. Unique to this study, they looked at baby teeth so they could measure exposure before a diagnosis has been made.

22.01.2022 Did anyone else catch this tonight on SBS? Poo talk has hit the mainstream! My prediction is that there will be patented poo supplements in our future :-). And I loved the koala story - did you know that baby koalas arent able to digest eucalyptus leaves until mumma koala feeds it some of their poo?

21.01.2022 Lots of vegan teenagers so paying extra attention to iron is key. Iron in plant foods is harder to absorb so eat more high iron plant foods for a start (1.8 x RDA), eat with vitamin C foods, away from tea and coffee. Soak, sprout and ferment foods to decrease phytates and cook in a cast iron pan.

20.01.2022 Yellow pea milk? Hmm. Substitutes for milk can be tricky with kids. "Soy milk can taste chalky, and soy beans are notorious for being genetically modified. Almond milk, despite its high-protein reputation, has only one-eighth the protein of dairy milk and requires huge amounts of water to produce. Rice milk has a pleasant enough flavor but is also low in protein"

20.01.2022 So my last post peaked my interest around any research into health effects of glyphosate exposure long term and this turned up in my inbox...

19.01.2022 Does your pregnancy multi contain choline? Choline plays an important role in DNA methylation and brain development and its absorption from our diet is decreased if there is gut dysbiosis. Im particular about which nutritional supplements I prescribe especially for pregnancy (FYI - Elevit doesnt contain choline).

18.01.2022 A sobering read (I encourage you to read it). Sad as I love crystals but it's completely changed my position on buying any for now.

18.01.2022 Depression hits new dads too My youngest daughter has been a part of the Growing Up In Australia study. Here are some interesting findings as a result of the same project in New Zealand. http://jamanetwork.com/j/jamapsychiatry/fullarticle/2601411

18.01.2022 I spent the weekend at the MINDD Forum and was inspired by the speakers and topics. I think my take home was around the concept of chronic infections and their implication in triggering auto-immunity. Auto-immunity (our immune responses directed at our own cells) is a looming health crisis in my opinion. And the current paradigm of killing bad bugs or the antibiotic era is no longer part of the solution. So what is? Building resilience and robust self defence. Hope you enjoyed your weekend!

17.01.2022 Handy website for baby food recipes, categorised by age group

17.01.2022 Interesting new strategy for diagnosing and assessing gut health. Swallow a sensor which measures gut gases which tell us when food is being fermented and potentially replace biopsies. Might be a great diagnostic tool in IBS, FODMAPS, SIBO etc.

16.01.2022 The top 6 sources of calories (or kilojoules) for children and adolescents according to the USDA (2010). Similar story in Aus Im guessing? 1. Grain-based desserts (cakes, pastries, sweet biscuits etc) 2. Pizza 3. Soft drinks/energy drinks/sports drinks... 4. Yeast breads 5. Chicken and chicken mixed dishes (hello KFC, Maccas nuggets :)) 6. Pasta and pasta dishes See more

16.01.2022 A diet high in refined sugars makes children and adults more susceptible to opioid addiction and overdose according to this research. In particular, HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), dampened the dopamine response to opioid drugs (eg, Oxycontin) so more of the drug is needed for effects which increases amount taken and increases risk of addiction. Take home: if you or your kids require opioid medications (for pain), stay away from soft drinks etc which contain HFCS.

15.01.2022 50,000 disposable coffee cups are thrown away every 30 minutes in Australia. Woah! Time to think twice before buying a take away coffee methinks. Drink in. Or bring our own. Wonder if any cafes on North side are doing this?

14.01.2022 A friend posted this slide from a conference she's at in the U.S. (focusing on neuro and dementias) but check out the toxins implicated in ADHD. Interesting too that Glyphosate (Round Up) makes the list but data pending on consequences..hmmm! P.S. Testing is available if you're interested in seeing your own (or your child's) risk profile.

12.01.2022 "Today 1 in 4 young Australians has a mental health condition, 1 in 3 have allergies, 1 in 4 have asthma, 1 in 10 have ADHD, and 1 in 63 have Autism. Childhood cancer, diabetes, obesity and depression have each more than doubled over the past 2 decades." (MINDD Foundation) We see statistics like this all the time but today I actually saw them. We can be thankful to modern medicine for lots of things but lets not be blinded to what else is going on in the meantime. Shocking statistics wouldnt you agree?

12.01.2022 Yes! Love that this idea is getting airplay.

12.01.2022 I've had teenagers with sore throats at home this week. Made Sage tea with honey for them. I just used Blooms Sage dried herb and added some Manuka honey and a slice of lemon. I'm not renowned for my home mother nursing skills (too impatient with my own kids ) but this sorted them out.

11.01.2022 Vitamin D supplementation halved the risk of acute respiratory infections in those who were severely Vitamin D deficient and reduced risk in those less severely deficient. Clinic Note: It costs $50 to test your vitamin D level (blood serum). If youre deficient, supplementation can make a big difference in many health conditions.

10.01.2022 Key Points: 1. Antibiotics still account for majority of medication prescribed to children in Western countries. 2. Intestinal microbiota acquired initially during birth and enhanced by breast milk plays an important role in early metabolic programming with lasting health consequences. 3. Broad spectrum antibiotics effect Bifido spp levels, low Bifido is associated with increased BMI, adiposity and metabolic diseases. 4. It takes about 2 years post antibiotics for levels t...o normalise. 5. Low Bifido leads to an increase in LPS producing organisms which contribute to intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and induces inflammation, insulin resistance and weight gain. Got all that? Phew! :-) See more

09.01.2022 Teenagers with acne. Im amazed at how effective these 2 treatments are at improving this condition. Want to know what they are? Zinc and water. At least 25mg zinc and at least 1.5-2L water (no soft drinks/juices). Measure it out and make sure they drink this every day. Try it!

06.01.2022 Just came across this one. Witnessing a baby/child hold their breath is quite scary. This Cochrane review found that Iron supplementation (at 5 mg/kg/day of elemental iron for 16 weeks) was successful in reducing the frequency and severity of breath-holding attacks. Worth doing full iron studies for this condition.

04.01.2022 A study looking at health outcomes in vaccinated and unvaccinated children and if any association between vaccination, preterm birth and NDD (neurodevelopmental disorders). Initial findings - vaccinated children were significantly less likely than the unvaccinated to have been diagnosed with chickenpox and pertussis, but significantly more likely to have been diagnosed with pneumonia, otitis media, allergies and NDD (that is, ASD, ADHD, and/or a learning disability). Vaccina...tion was significantly associated with NDD, while preterm birth without vaccination was not. Preterm birth coupled with vaccination, however, was associated with a synergistic increase in the odds of NDD, suggesting the possibility that vaccination could precipitate adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants. These results provide clues to the epidemiology and causation of NDD but question the safety of current vaccination programs for preterm infants. https://worldmercuryproject.org//Preterm-Unvaccinated-vacc

03.01.2022 So, oysters really are an aphrodisiac! This research showed that couples consuming two or more servings of seafood every week enjoyed more sex and got pregnant faster than those eating seafood less often (Im assuming that the zinc and omega-3 fats found in seafood played a role too )

03.01.2022 Oxalates are a natural food compound which some people have trouble breaking down efficiently which can then accumulate in organs, joints and body tissues causing them pain and inflammation and symptoms such as urinary urgency, vulvodynia, burning sensation, fatigue and kidney stones. Foods which are very high in oxalates include spinach, beetroot, kiwifruit, raspberries, pomegranate, nuts, beans, soy, quinoa, dark chocolate, green tea, sweet potato and turmeric (all the healthy stuff). If oxalate issues are suspected, urinary testing can assess the body load and treatment involves reducing high oxalate foods along with supporting oxalate metabolism with co-factor nutrients and improving gut health.

02.01.2022 Ideas for nature play - address school holiday boredom and any Nature Deficit Disorder (just need to rug up if youre in Sydney :-)) http://theplayfiles.blogspot.com.au/

02.01.2022 Helpful graphic about abdominal pain

02.01.2022 This is so good to see!

02.01.2022 Oils used were rosewood (5 parts), clove (1 part) and litsea (1 part).

01.01.2022 A rewarding day in clinic today. Highlights were formulating a way forward with a lovely family with their 3 year old boy recently diagnosed with ASD. I love these kids (heart melt). And a follow up with a 10 year old girl who first saw me in January for weight issues. From a desperately worried mum (being told to stop worrying by other health providers) and a child in tears to a vibrant positive kid who feels in control again (now down from obese to overweight category, 4cm off waist). In her case, testing and treatment for blood glucose issues and a low functioning thyroid along with supporting dietary changes. Have a great weekend everyone. Off to Taste of Manly for me.
