21.01.2022 Physical therapy can help to manage pain. Chronic pain is like a broken alarm clock. Imagine that your morning alarm clock goes off at 7 am, and you roll over to hit the snooze button, but it doesn’t turn off like it’s supposed to do. You try banging the snooze bar, switching the alarm off, unplugging the clock, taking out the batteries, and even throwing it out the window, but it still keeps ringing. You’re clearly awake at this point, so the ringing alarm clock is not d...oing any good anymore, but it just won’t turn off. The pain alarm in our body can be just like this broken alarm clock. It can just keep ringing and ringing even though it’s not helping us in any way (Coakley 2013). Monitored and guided exercise can help to reduce the sensitivity of chronic pain and can help you to be active in a safe way. You can train your body to recognise sensitivity and work in conjunction with your psychology (thoughts. attitudes and conceptions) to re-train your nervous system while becoming physically strong. 20.01.2022 Our scans only tell us part of the story When it comes to pain, diagnostic scans do not reveal all the details unique to you and your pain. This could be the amount of pain you feel, the pain you might have in the future and your current abilities. Although scans are helpful for highlighting a physical issue, that may or may not relate to your pain, it is important to understand they are not the be all to end all and there are different ways to think about pain. There... is now a new way of thinking about pain. Did you know that just as you can learn to play a musical instrument or a new language, our bodies can learn and also UNLEARN pain? 20.01.2022 The myths of chronic pain There are many common myths associated with chronic pain that must be uncovered. Notions such as relying on diagnostic scans for a full diagnosis or avoiding activity with the fear that it will cause more pain are just some of the common myths out there. We need to really look deeper at these notions and separate the negativity associated with them to focus on what CAN be done. For instance, the common belief that surgery is my only chance of imp...rovement is in fact a misconception. Only 1-5 % of lower back pain is caused by serious disease or injury and natural therapies such as physical therapy should be utilised first until all other efforts have been exhausted before even considering surgery. 19.01.2022 Music and the Brain There are other tools you can utilise to help you on your pain journey towards recovery. Listening to the music you enjoy and making music has incredible healing powers and can help with decreasing anxiety, stress and help to reduce pain. Did you know that Alzheimer's patients can recall and sing songs long after they have stopped being able to recognise names and faces? This just goes to show the incredible influence music can have on our brains an...d how it can be used to stimulate good experiences and wellbeing. What is the Mozart effect? It is commonly thought that listening to classical music such as that of Mozart enhances cognitive performance. However, recent findings show that listening to any music that is personally enjoyable has positive effects on cognition. Our cognitions have a huge influence on chronic pain sufferers especially which is why it is so important to adopt positivity and stimulate our brains in the best ways possible. 15.01.2022 Diagnostic reports do not always reflect your actual problem As we age, there are several common changes that we observe in spine imaging that are completely normal in the majority of people. Research shows from as young as 20 years of age there are signs of disk and joint changes in those who do not even have any pain. These findings are clearly part of the normal ageing process and are not associated with pain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3EK9h4JQlo... Are your x-ray and MRI results helpful or harmful? 05.01.2022 Who else is beyond ready for things to get back to normal? Proactively supporting the immune system certainly isn’t new or groundbreaking news, but I feel tha...t it’s currently being overlooked. The world is spending so much time thinking about vaccines and restrictions and re-openings vs closures and masks and the funding of economic stimulus packages... when really, the best thing we can do right now (as a society) and the one thing we have the most control over is our own immune health. Stop this situation in its tracks, starting with yourself. Take a break from the news if it’s stressing you out. Rest. Breathe deeply. Nourish yourself with healthy food. Supplement with healing herbs such as echinacea, elderberry, and garlic. Get plenty of vitamin D, C, B complex, and zinc. Eat your veggies. Make love. Diffuse pure respiratory supporting essential oils. And move your body every single day. Find what you love and then do it DAILY. 02.01.2022 The Why Behind Pain Pain's Purpose The goal of pain is to motivate some sort of action. . Similar to an alarm!... . It lets you know when you've: Stepped on a tack Sat on a hot, leather seat Sprained your ankle . Pain is not inherently bad; in fact, you need it. . Pain helps you stay safe and gives time to heal. . It should go up when you need it...and back down when you don't anymore. . But, sometimes the alarm can malfunction and get disconnected from its original purpose resulting in chronic pain. . 01.01.2022 Understanding Pain from a whole new perspective Pain is not just physical like we think. It has a snowball effect that can be very disruptive if not attended to.... First the body is affected with inflammation, fatigue and pain flare ups. As the body is actively fighting this new problem your emotional centres start to activate in order to "cope" with the pain and discomfort. During this time, we tend to become overwhelmed and anxious leading to eventually feeling distraught and thus, spiking up our physical exhaustion. In this spiralling process, the next centres affected are mental cognition and basic motor functions. When the body is in pain and overwhelmed by anxiety, we stop paying attention to our daily life tasks. We become distracted, forgetful and lost in our own stressful emotions Wonder why? The brain literally does not have enough energy to support both day to day life and the energy draining effects of being in pain. Once the will to "get better" is weakened by pain, stress, anxiety and low cognitive function, we begin to fear active movement, indulge in unhealthy nutritional intake and end up overusing pain medications- all in all blinding ourselves to the root problem. Such non-constructive behaviors can further fuel our pain induced cycle and it becomes never ending.... How Can you help yourself through this? The first steps involve Awareness and acknowledgement of the changes going on in your body. Next, address it with a healthcare professional GP, Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, Massage therapist, Podiatrist and so on. Someone you trust and someone that will "listen" to you and guide you accordingly You don't have to be stuck in a spiral down effect of the pain cycle. Seek help proactively

01.01.2022 Stress Response The Stress Triangle (2/11) [Series] Nearly every time stress is written, talked, or blogged about, it is framed as if any source of it ought t...o be drowned in lavender oil and epsom salts until it dissolves away. . The word has become synonymous with distress: anguish, suffering, torment, in shortharm. Stress, to many, is bad 100% of the time. . But, is it? . Picture a triangle with the word stress inside of it. Each side of the triangle plays a role in determining whether stress is good or bad for us. . Although we often only remember the major stressors of life, like the death of a loved one or a job loss, that’s not what we brush shoulders with the most. Most of life is made up of small, repetitive stressors. . It's waking up to a dead phone because the plug came out of the wall; it's someone already using all the hot water in the shower; it's hitting a traffic jam on your way to work. . It’s the same way a small stream carves through rock. It cuts through because of its persistence not its intensity. Likewise, although most stress we encounter is not greatly intense, if we are not prepared for it, it’s sufficiently frequent to wear us down. . Continued in Next Post... .
