25.01.2022 LEAVE LOADING What is leave loading? Leave loading is an extra payment that entitled employees receive whilst on annual leave; usually an extra 17.5% on top of their normal wage according to Law Access NSW. Leave loading is a common feature in some industry awards in Australia, but not all employees are entitled to it. Be sure to check with your employee to see if youre entitled to leave loading.... Who is entitled to leave loading? Leave loading is a legal entitlement in some industry awards. An award is a legal document setting out minimum rates of pay and employment conditions for a particular industry. According to Fair Work Australia, there are 122 different awards in effect which cover most of Australias working population. Some examples of industries whose awards include leave loading include: building and construction, trades, manufacturing, hospitality, hair and beauty and real estate. 23.01.2022 SIMPLER DEPRECIATION FOR SMALL BUSINESS You can choose to use the simplified depreciation rules if you have a small business with an aggregated turnover (the total normal income of your business and that of any associated businesses) of less than: - $10 million from 1 July 2016 onwards - $2 million for previous income years.... Simplified depreciation rules for small businesses include: - an instant asset write-off for assets that cost less than the relevant threshold - a general small business pool for assets that cost the same or more than the relevant threshold, which has simplified calculations to work out the depreciation deduction. RECENT CHANGES From 12 March 2020 until 31 December 2020 the instant asset write-off: - threshold amount for each asset is $150,000 (up from $30,000) - eligibility has been expanded to cover businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $500 million (up from $50 million). From 12 March 2020 until 30 June 2021 the Backing business investment measure provides a time-limited (15 month) investment incentive to support business investment and economic growth, by accelerating depreciation deductions. The key features of the incentive are as follows: The benefits are either - deduction of 50% of the cost or opening adjustable value of an eligible asset on installation. Existing depreciation rules apply to the balance of the assets cost - if you are using the simplified depreciation rules for small business, you can claim 57.5% of the cost of the asset in the first year you add the asset to the small business pool. Eligible businesses businesses with aggregated turnover below $500 million. Eligible assets new depreciating assets (for example, plant, equipment and specified intangible assets, such as patents). The assets must be first held, and first used or first installed ready for use for a taxable purpose on or after 12 March 2020 until 30 June 2021. Some exclusions apply. Source: www.ato.gov.au

18.01.2022 BOOSTING CASH FLOW FOR EMPLOYERS Temporary cash flow boosts will support small and medium businesses and not-for-profit organisations during the economic downturn associated with COVID-19. Eligible businesses and not-for-profit (NFP) organisations who employ staff will receive between $20,000 to $100,000 in cash flow boost amounts by lodging their activity statements up to the month or quarter of September 2020.... The cash flow boosts will be delivered as credits in the activity statement system. They will generally be equivalent to the amount withheld from wages paid to employees for each monthly or quarterly period from March to June 2020. In practice, this means you keep the amounts you have withheld from payments for these periods. However, there are some exceptions. An additional cash flow boost will be applied when activity statements for each monthly or quarterly period from June to September 2020 are lodged. These credits are equal to the total boosts credited for March to June 2020. They will be paid out in either two or four instalments depending on your reporting cycle. 18.01.2022 JURY DUTY Jury duty, also known as jury service, is a type of community service leave. Employees, including casual employees, can take leave to attend jury selection and jury duty. Notice and evidence... Employees must advise their employers of the period or expected period of leave as soon as possible. If an employee requests leave they need to provide evidence showing they attended jury selection or jury duty. Payment for jury duty Full-time and part-time employees have to be paid 'make-up pay' for the first 10 days of jury selection and jury duty. Make-up pay is the difference between any jury duty payment the employee receives (excluding any expense-related allowances) from the court and the employee's base pay rate for the ordinary hours they would have worked. Before paying make-up pay, an employer may request evidence from the employee to show: - that the employee has taken all necessary steps to obtain jury duty pay - the total amount of jury duty pay that has been paid or will be payable to the employee for the period. If the employee can't provide evidence, they won't be entitled to make-up pay.
