23.01.2022 Do LOUD Fitness Classes NEED to Take a Toll on Instructors’ VOICES? The answer is NO. And my mission & passion is to help you learn why. BIG THANK you to @nyt...imes, @gerrenliles, & @fitnesscareermastery for spreading awareness about this topic so VERY near and dear to my heart & central to the mission of Voxfit. . . Motivating, inspiring, coaching, & guiding clients through a fitness journey they cannot do alone does not require you as the instructor to shout OR damage your vocal folds (your INSTRUMENT). It DOES require you to prepare your instrument for use (optimal vocal health, realistic vocal schedule, consistent vocal exercises), use it efficiently (in & outside of the studio) & use it dynamically while teaching (see my post about vocal spice & stay tuned for more info! There are MANY more ways to motivate & inspire than being loud). It requires you to empower yourself with education, learning, & awareness about your beautiful motivator inside your neck (& how to protect it) & it requires you to be an ADVOCATE for yourself (& your fellow fitpros)! It does NOT require you to turn down your music (yasss!). . . I remember awhile back when a private client of mine mentioned she had gone to voice therapy once before but was told to simply turn down her music. This #fitpro felt annoyed & disconnected because the medical world did not seem to understand the monumental IMPORTANCE of MUSIC within a group fitness class. Herein lies my #mission againmerging the medical & fitness worlds to improve awareness, education, advocacy, health, efficiency, & dynamics related to the VOICES of occupational voice users, especially fitness professionals. Music truly gives MEANING to movement, & MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE. Clients need to FEEL the music & allow it to EMPOWER them to push past self-imposed limits & get outside their minds. Simply turning down the music will almost immediately change the whole energy & vibe within the room as well as possibly pull clients away from the zone you created for them that had them en route to achievement of their goals. MUSIC, VOICE, & the CONNECTION between the two are incredibly important to the success of a fitness class as well as the engagement between instructor & client. The MAGIC is in how to successfully balance, vary, & SPICE up these huge components of your class. Stay tuned for more as we dive deeper into this topic. . . #voxfit #voice #voicefitness #vox #fitnessinstructor #GFI #fitness #groupfitness #boutiquefitness #indoorcycling #lagree #barre #yoga #bootcamp #hiit #zumba #dance #coach #instructor #occupationalvoiceuser #speechpathologist #voicespecialist #poweredbypassion #voicesfittoinspire #yourbestvoice #music #movementismedicine #prioritizeyourvoice #fitness @voxfit_ See more

12.01.2022 Your Voice & Bushfire Season Much like second-hand cigarette smoke, or general air pollution, inhaling bushfire smoke has the potential to really put your voice... off it’s A-game. And unfortunately for Australians, it looks like this is an unavoidable problem that is only going to get worse in the coming months and years. So, it’s important to understand what you can do to mitigate the effects of bushfire smoke. What does bushfire smoke do to the voice? Without going into huge detail, bushfire smoke particles are really small, smaller than a blood cell in some instances, and when you inhale they are capable of crossing into the bloodstream. Your body treats smoke particles like an invasion and goes into a defensive mode (if you get hayfever you’ll experience a similar response). Typical symptoms include: Itchy red eyes Inflamed/dry vocal folds Sore and inflamed throat Sinusitis Bronchitis Difficulty breathing, particularly during exercise Bushfire smoke has been found to be even more harmful to asthmatics than regular air pollution, so it’s pretty nasty stuff. What can I do about it? It’s all about managing risk, and you may find that smoke affects you more or less than some of your colleagues. The most important thing you can do is to limit your exposure as much as possible. None of the below measures are going to totally remove the risk, but a combination of them should at least help you mitigate some of the effects on your voice. - Get an air pollution mask. If you’ve been to China, you know what a lifesaver these can be. It’s really important that the mask is rated at least N95, which removes 95% of PM2.5 (tiny particulate matter that are 2.5 micrometres in diameter, 20x smaller than a human hair). It also has to be completely sealed around your mouth and nose - if it isn’t, then it’s almost completely useless. Respro and Cambridge masks have been well reviewed. - If indoors, keep the windows and doors completely sealed, and the air conditioner on recirculate. Make sure your air conditioners’ filter is cleaned regularly. - Most air purifiers in the home have limited benefit, as they are not generally designed to filter out the smallest particles. If you do have a purifier, check it has a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter. Make sure the air purifier is big enough to work in the space too - they are only capable of purifying a certain amount of air. - Stay well-hydrated - Use a saline solution nebuliser or steam inhaler before bed/when you wake up. - Use saline solution nasal irrigation if your sinuses are blocked/inflamed (in consultation with your medical professional) - If the Air Quality Index is higher than 160 you shouldn't spend much time outdoors and certainly don't exercise outdoors.

11.01.2022 READING BITE : Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is one of the most common voice disorders. This condition causes nasty s...ymptoms such as a hoarse voice quality, vocal fatigue and even muscular pain/cramping. MTD is defined as excess tension in the larynx and pharynx. This decreases the efficiency of vocal fold vibration patterns. Did know there are 2 ? Absence of a vocal fold pathology such as nodules Presence of a vocal fold pathology. Any form of tension in the back, shoulders, neck, tongue, larynx can affect the perfect coordination of respiration, phonation and resonance, leading to symptoms of MDT. ? For those with primary MTD, the best available evidence indicates behavioural voice therapy consisting of voice exercises/retraining and vocal hygiene/education. One study indicated that those who underwent voice therapy had statistically significant improvement compared to the no treatment group. Interestingly, preliminary data for treatment groups of voice therapy, a combination of voice and physical therapy, and physical therapy alone, all saw improvement in the Voice Handicap Index. While using physical therapy alone to treat MTD is not common practice, for a subset of participants with MTD and excess muscle tension outside of the larynx, physical therapy is a technique that can be used in conjunction with voice therapy. More research looking at physical therapy as an independent therapy approach is needed in this area. As always, a thorough assessment is important to determine, if any, the underlying cause of your MTD so that the appropriate therapy can be assigned. , , REFERENCE Craig, J., Tomlinson, C., & Stevens et al. 06.01.2022 #TipTuesday today is about primary #MuscleTensionDysphonia This disorder is treatable by speech language pathologists who specializes in #voicedisorders. It occ...urs in people who may have had a cough, illness, upper respiratory infection, laryngitis, or other event that caused extreme swelling of the vocal cords. Sometimes it happens from stressful events. It usually occurs in my clinic when the patient tries antibiotics and steroids with no improvement. Many patients are completely aphonic (whisper only voice) Here’s a visual explaining what you might see on videostroboscopy and how IMPORTANT visualization is in order to treat appropriately. Videostroboscopy shows us hyperfunctional underclosure and this exam shows MTD. There is no paralysis.
