25.01.2022 2020 Volunteer of the Year - Tim Miller Tim has applied passion, dedication and determination and is our outstanding 2020 Volunteer of the Year. His contribution across several organisations has made a significant impact on the Canberra region. Tim’s Holden Rally Team participates in outback rallies to raise money for a range of causes, and Tim operates the Aranda Street Library with his family. However, if you recognise Tim’s name, it may be for his work in creating Lid...s4Kids Australia In May 2019, Tim founded Lids4Kids, a completely volunteer-run organisation that collects used plastic bottle tops. These were originally processed for Envision Hands, a not-for-profit organisation that creates mobility devices for children. Due to overwhelming support, Lids4Kids are now creating other items out of recycled plastic to benefit kids. As of March 2020, more than 1 million lids have been saved from ACT landfill. Lids4Kids has now moved to the national collection of lids, and Tim oversees 30 regional volunteer coordinators and thousands of volunteers across Australia. Last year Tim also arranged a donation drive for the G-Spot Taree Bushfire Victims Appeal, and with the support of businesses, donated a car to a family in need. Tim is a living testament that with a bit of passion, you can move mountains. Congratulations Tim! #2020VolAwards #2020Volunteeroftheyear

25.01.2022 2020 Canberra's Choice Award - Roundabout Canberra Roundabout Canberra is a volunteer powered organisation that takes donations of baby and children’s items and provides them to local families in need. Roundabout Canberra volunteers have supported over 1,500 local children since February 2018, spending countless hours sorting, cleaning, packing, and safety checking thousands of donations before passing them on. Assisting families in vulnerable circumstances, Roundabout Canberra has supported families fleeing domestic violence, experiencing homelessness, and those suffering extreme financial hardship. Well voted, congratulations Roundabout Canberra. #2020VolAwards

24.01.2022 The @LaborClubGroup Volunteer Team of the Year was awarded to TWO TEAMS this year: ACT Emergency Services Agency The ACT Rural Fire Service and ACT State Emergency Service have faced an unrelenting year, faced with fires, storms and of course, COVID-19. This year, volunteers of the Agency have gone beyond their normal duties and spent a significant amount of time away from their families, to protect the safety and wellbeing of our community. ESA battled the East Coast b...ushfires, protected the ACT against our own bushfires, and ensured food and relief parcels were provided for those who did not have access to food and essential items during Canberra’s initial COVID-19 lockdown. ESA volunteers have had an immeasurable impact on the Canberra community over the past year. We cannot thank you enough for your enormous contribution to our community’s safety and wellbeing. #2020VolAwards See more

17.01.2022 2020 Galent Management Consulting Volunteer Leadership Award - John Brookes Quite honestly, it’s going to be hard to touch on everything John has done to achieve the 2020 Volunteer Leadership Award. John has lived a life of community service, having spent over 25 years working in the charity sector. Leadership is about sharing knowledge and John has been able to contribute his expertise to create websites and digital content that have increased the reach and impact of ...several organisations. This includes developing a website and online consumer forum for Perinatel Wellbeing centre; developing an e-newsletter for the Victims of Crime Assistance League; and through ongoing volunteer work with the ACT Mental Health Consumer Network. Most recently, John has set up a voluntary group using the arts as a recovery and self-empowerment tool for those living with a disability; and has also joined the Emergency Volunteer Response Team in Canberra, assisting those affected by bushfires to process their claims. We are thrilled to recognise your contribution tonight. Congratulations John! #2020VolAwards See more

15.01.2022 The second team to be awarded the @LaborClubGroup Volunteer Team of the Year was Lifeline Canberra Crisis Support Supervisors Lifeline Canberra has a team of 40 in-shift Crisis Support Supervisor volunteers who look after the welfare of Telephone Crisis Supporters while they are on shift. Crisis Support Supervisors are required to make immediate decisions regarding a caller’s safety. They calmly and efficiently assess the situation whilst simultaneously supporting both ...the caller and the Crisis Supporter. Often, the supervisor is required to intervene and get emergency help for a caller who may be at risk of suiciding or pose a harm to themselves or others. Lifeline Canberra answers over 37,000 callers in crisis every year, and Crisis Support Supervisors are paramount to saving lives in our community. Since March, Lifeline has seen a 25% increase in calls, as mental health criseeees are magnified by the pandemic. Crisis Support Supervisors are integral to the Lifeline team, and are vital to our community during these trying times. Congratulations! #2020VolAwards See more

From natural disasters to a global pandemic, 2020 really has been the year of the volunteer. International Volunteer Managers Day is a time for us to stop... and reflect on this often-invisible line of work that makes our community thrive. We are delighted to celebrate this day through recognising our local champions in the Volunteer Management profession. 14.01.2022 Today the lovely Lynn spoke about volunteering at ANU's Virtual Volunteering Expo for #NSVW2020. It's been fast learning having to deliver so much of our training and education online. However, the transition has been a positive one, which will increase our service to the community, alongside face-to-face as it returns.

14.01.2022 We acknowledge and celebrate that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. This week is #NAIDOCWeek, a time when all Australians celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This year's theme "Always Was..., Always Will Be" recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. There are many events taking place this week, and plenty resources to learn more and get involved! #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOC - https://buff.ly/35b3etf.
