25.01.2022 Meet our new arrivals!! This beautiful Black Swan was proudly showing off her gorgeous, fluffy cygnets at the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre this morning. Even though we are temporarily closed for our renovation (more exciting news on that soon!), the walking trails around the centre are open and are a wonderful school holiday activity. We are still fundraising to add the finishing touches to our new centre. Please help us if you can! https://donorbox.org/help-revitalise-the-h...erdsman-lake-wild #perth #herdsmanlake #westernaustralia

25.01.2022 Please remember to not release pet fish into drains and waterways. A recent find of feral Koi fish in Tomato Lake has our aquatic pest biosecurity team concerne...d about the potential damage to the system from the dumped species. Pet species such as Carp and Koi can breed quickly and are hard to eliminate once established. They’re capable of laying millions of eggs, growing to very large sizes, outcompeting our native species, and destroying habitats. They can also contribute to toxic algal blooms by upsetting the natural balance of the water system. Please remember: If you own a fish pond, release wastewater onto your lawn or garden and do not dispose down a drain or toilet. If you no longer want your fish, give them to an aquarium, or contact an organisation such as the Koi Society of Western Australia. The RSCPA has information on how to humanely euthanise fish. https://bit.ly/3a2jxJP If you catch a pest or ornamental species, please contact us and do not return it to the water. Any unusual activity can be reported by email [email protected], or call FishWatch on 1800 815 507. https://bit.ly/3ihKr3f

23.01.2022 Happy Tadpole Tuesday! It's that time of year, when tadpoles are starting to appear in our ponds. Jacqueline in Padbury has some excess tadpoles she's looking to re-home. If you are interested and live within 2 - 3 suburbs, please let us know and we'll put you in touch. We're still raising funds to help us renovate the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre. Please contribute if you can! https://donorbox.org/help-revitalise-the-herdsman-lake-wild

23.01.2022 A new initiative between BirdLife Australia and RSPCA Victoria aims to raise awareness of Australia's native ducks. They have created a website all about native duck species and how we can protect them --> https://discoverducks.org.au/. While the information is centred on Victoria, it is also relevant for us in WA. They are calling for images of native duck species to be shared with #DiscoverDucks. Which species can you spot living at Herdsman Lake?

22.01.2022 Interesting research led by Curtin University PhD Candidate Damian Lettoof has found tiger snakes are good indicators of wetland pollution levels. They found snakes at Herdsman Lake had the highest levels of accumulated heavy metals than the other Perth wetlands in the study. 11.01.2022 We have some FANTASTIC news to share! You may have noticed that we've been a bit quiet for the last few months... The reason is that we've been planning and scheming and we are now ready to share our exciting news with you!... We have been fortunate enough to secure a Lotterywest Grant to renovate the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre, create new displays and increase the range of programmes and events we offer. We've been working with amazing local exhibition designer, Creative Spaces, to come up with an exciting new plan for the Centre. There will be new, interactive displays and hands-on activities for kids (and big kids!) to learn about the amazing creatures that call Herdsman Lake home. However, these things take time and we will be CLOSED for the JULY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS and TERM 3 while building and construction take place. We appreciate your patience during this time. We'll keep you informed with some sneak peeks of our progress!

11.01.2022 We love being part of the Threatened Species Bake Off run by the Threatened Species Commissioner! This year, our entry is the Night Parrot or Wangawang (Pezoporus occidentalis). Our cake celebrates the achievements of Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa’s Rangers in locating the elusive Night Parrot on Martu Country in the Pilbara.... The Night Parrot is an endangered parrot that was believed to be extinct, but thanks to the collaborative effort of Dr Stephen Murphy and the Martu Rangers, there are now 5 confirmed populations in WA. Martu Rangers manage over 14 million hectares of country in the Great and Little Sandy deserts and their work is critical in finding new populations, roosting sites, and protecting these locations from bushfire. To see the full story visit: https://www.abc.net.au//elusive-night-parrot-disc/12581900 We have a soft spot for the Night parrot as Ornithologist John Gould (after whom our organisation was named), described the night parrot in 1861, from a specimen that was collected 13 km southeast of Mt Farmer in Western Australia. This submission is a lemon butter cake, drizzled with lemon icing and topped with a ginger nut biscuit crumb. The Spinifex and Night Parrot are made from fondant. #TSBakeOff #tsbakeoff2020 Threatened Species Commissioner Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa Image Credit: The Night Parrot illustrated by Elizabeth Gould (1804-1841) for John Gould’s (1804-1881) Birds of Australia (1972 Edition, 8 Volumes)

07.01.2022 Spring has sprung at Herdsman Lake! Not only are we excited about the new arrivals at the lake, we're also over-the-moon that we are just weeks away from starting construction work on our Revitalisation Project for the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre. We are still looking for additional funding to complete this exciting project that will benefit thousands of visitors to Herdsman Lake. Please donate if you can! https://donorbox.org/help-revitalise-the-herdsman-lake-wild... #herdsmanlake #perth #westernaustralia #justanotherdayinwa

03.01.2022 So many great reasons why the natural environment should be conserved... here is another.

02.01.2022 The first phase of the revitalisation plan for the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre is under way! The generous support of Lotterywest has enabled us to start creating a new, state-of-the-art Discovery Centre with interactive exhibits and displays. However, more funding is required and we are calling on our valued supporters to help.... Raising $50,000 will enable us to complete our project and ensure that future generations of Western Australians will be able to enjoy this idyllic location, learn about nature and develop a passion for the environment. PLEASE HELP US IF YOU CAN and SHARE OUR CAMPAIGN to help us reach our goal. All donations are tax-deductible.
