How many well bred cattle out there are not reaching optimum performance when one link in the chain is under done ? 12.01.2022 Herd health facts - Abortion Cows can suffer abnormalities during pregnancy leading to mummification of the foetus or resulting from maternal or foetal abnormality. All cases where the pregnancy terminates early and the foetus is expelled are called abortions.... There are multiple causes of abortion and the incidence of abortions in a herd can vary greatly depending on the husbandry system and calving pattern, the incidence of abortion at herd level also varies markedly. It has been suggested that an abortion rate of 5% or more in a herd should be considered an indication of an abortion problem. Causes of abortion - Drug-induced (prostaglandin (PG) injection most often used in FTAI, HDAI programs and in females under going advanced reproduction technologies / breeding management strategies ) Hypothyroidism Stress (transport, environmental, veterinary / husbandry treatments, poor handling.) 01.01.2022 Artificial Insemination semen quality and collection - Written by James Matts Semen quality is crucial, to determine semen quality this is best done by a qualified morphologist who will use a high powered digital microscope to assess the contents of a single straw from a batch of straws to determine what the post thaw qualities of the semen are going to be. Each time a bull ejaculates this is referred to as a batch, batches vary from a few straws to hundreds of straws dependi...ng on age, breed, body condition etc. Batch quality will vary from batch to batch from the same bull due to factors such as nutrition and stress. Semen ejaculated today was made in the testicles around 8 weeks earlier. Any good morphologist or collection centre laboratory should have no problem providing you with a written report which will include the identifying particulars of the straw/s and semen specific qualities might include motility, defects, agglutination, sperm count etc. When buying straws it is becoming an increasingly popular practice for buyers to request a post thaw certificate at purchase often with minimum requirements set out as a prerequisite to a successful sale. Semen straws will have various codes and info printed on them which include the collection centre code, bull name, registered ID, batch number or code, export qualifications etc. Straw colour in some breeds may also indicate the intended destination for the semen in the straw. Straws produced in modern centres are usually 1/4ml and older collections or bulls producing more dilute semen many be processed in 1/2ml straws. Conventional semen straws generally contain 10 million to 15 million sperm or more per dose. Sexed semen straws contain 2 million to 10 million sperm per dose depending on the bull, semen sex and the sexing technology used. Semen from an ejaculate is mixed with a diluent to help maintain semen integrity during the freezing process. In a bull collection centre, bulls are usually disease tested, sperm is also checked for suitability for freezing and once they’ve passed this series of tests they begin semen collection this is usually done by one of two methods AV ( Artificial Vagina ) which is generally the best method for bulls to provide high quality ejaculate, the second method is Electroejaculation which is not generally as good as the first method however it is still effective at procuring sperm from a bull which for a variety of reasons may not respond or be able to perform AV collection ie; leg injury. Generally, bulls with poor temperament are collected in a crush using the second method for safety reasons, and even bulls who are long term residents of centres where they have learnt the daily routine, these bulls will sometimes auto ejaculate on the way to the collection area. Using an AV requires the collector to get up close and personal with the bull and a great deal of bravery for the collector.
