21.01.2022 One of our elegant palms: Brahea armata. Brahea is a genus of palms in the Arecaceae family. A very attractive plant, with large, blue-grey fan leaves that grows slowly to about 12m tall. A drought tolerant palm from the dry inland areas of the USA and Mexico. The spectacular inflorescences that extend out beyond the crown add more beauty to the already stunning specimen.... # waitearboretumpalms #waitearboretum #palm #droughttolerantplants #califonia #mexicopalms #brahea #braheaarmata #arecaceae #visitthearboretum #universityofadelaide #universityofadelaidebiodiversity #plantkingdom #monocot #uoasustainability #urrbrae #waitecampus

21.01.2022 The Waite Arboretum has two main palm collections: the first one was established in 1928, the handsome Chilean wine palm Jubaea chilensis (featured in the video) is part of this stunning old collection. The second collection was established in 1994 with donations from the Palm & Cycad Society (S.A.) and contains many cycads specimens apart from palms. Altogether there are more than 280 palms from 33 genera and more than 100 cycads from seven genera. #waitearboretumpalms #palms #cycads #universityofadelaide

01.01.2022 Tipuana tipu. Originally from South America and only species in the Tipuana genus, T. tipu is largely grown for shade and for its beautiful and fragrant yellow pea-like flowers that appear in late summer (last year photos). The flowers mature to a legume type pod called samara with one seed at the end. In South America they grow much taller and wider than in the drier South Australian environment. Beautiful avenues in Buenos Aires, Argentina are framed by these giant beauties which, when in flower, impregnate the air with their delightful scent. #tipuanatipu #waitearboretum #peaflower #yellowflower #connectwithnature #lovetrees #southamericantrees
