25.01.2022 Great news, the camping grounds in Walhalla are now open! All campgrounds have been made COVID safe. In line with current restrictions the following changes h...ave been put in place: Communal BBQ's and shared kitchen facilities are currently unavailable. Increased scheduled cleaning of amenities. COVID safe signage installed. If you are heading out to Walhalla for a break this weekend, please follow the guidelines and restrictions in place. To keep up to date with the current restrictions, please visit our COVID-19 community hub here https://www.bawbawshire.vic.gov.au/COVID-19-Community-Suppo
23.01.2022 The staff and volunteers of Walhalla Museum and Corner Store would like to say farewell to our much loved Mal. It is really difficult to post this, and no words can explain the love we have for him.
23.01.2022 We have been advised that the Long Tunnel Extended Mine tours will recommence on Friday 23 October, with Covid distancing measures in place. For information and bookings, please call 5165 6259.
23.01.2022 Work on the extensive museum renovation is continuing well, with attention now focused on the middle shopfront facing the street. We are making sure that special care is been to protect the historic fabric of the building interior, which is now over 120 years old. Today we removed the painted-over front door lock to remove generations of paint and give it some long overdue attention. After stripping and cleaning, it turned out to be a genuine Carpenter and Tildesley lock, made in Staffordshire, UK. The company operated between 1795 and 1919. In a few days time the lock will be returned to the door after being painted in a traditional gunmetal finish - it will look fantastic!

22.01.2022 An interesting story about the 1952 floods which caused huge damage in town.
20.01.2022 We are happy to announce that we will be re-opening the Corner Store Post Office from this Friday at 10am just in time for school holidays! The Museum renovations continue but the shop welcomes you. Come in and say hi!
20.01.2022 Have you voted for Gippsland History's 'Seven Historical Wonders of Gippsland' yet? We are looking after the seven nominations from Baw Baw Shire that will go into the final list from the whole region. The list is aimed at identifying built heritage which can be classified as a wonder- either engineering, socially or economically significant. Whilst Walhalla obviously has a huge number of possibilities, we are aiming to cover the entire municipality - so please feel free to nominate something that you think is really important. Some worthy wonders were left off, not the least being the draining of the Moe Swamp, which opened up Gippsland and allowed development of a highly productive agricultural area. Any thoughts on items left out?
19.01.2022 https://www.abc.net.au//tourism-bonanza-for-regio/12894626 Another great reason to plan a short stay in beautiful Walhalla!
18.01.2022 HISTORY MONTH The Gippsland History group is asking local people to nominate significant historical sites for its History Month poll, which will nominate the Seven Historical Wonders of Baw Baw Shire. Other municipalities in Gippsland will do the same and each Council area's top nominations will be aggregated to find out the top seven for Gippsland as a whole. Voting will run from 1-23 October with a Gippsland-wide poll during the final week. ... We are carrying this out on behalf of all of Baw Baw Shire - whilst the Walhalla area clearly has a wealth of assets, there are many other places in the Shire which have a claim to important heritage significance. Some early thoughts: - Long Tunnel Mine, Walhalla (the richest gold mine in Victorian history, not to be confused with the smaller Long Tunnel Extended Mine, open for tours) - Walhalla Goldfields Railway (Thomson-Walhalla) - Brunton's Bridge - Noojee railway Trestle Bridge - Warragul Railway Station - main building including restored Refreshment Rooms - Queen St Warragul - rare substantially intact heritage landscape - Timber tramways and bridges If you're in Baw Baw Shire - what do you think is an important heritage asset that should be recognized? Please feel free to pass on and respond with comments to this page.
18.01.2022 The Walhalla Goldfields Railway is really doing it tough because of the forced Covid closure, and hasn't sold a ticket since 22 March. They have just launched a virtual trip from Thomson to Walhalla as an urgent fundraiser to keep the railway afloat. We suggest you take a virtual ride up the beautiful Stringers Creek gorge and think about donating - they would really appreciate the support and all donations are tax-deductible. https://youtu.be/5472XWFTqus... #visitgippsland #visitwalhalla
16.01.2022 We are advised that the North Gardens Campground and informal roadside camping areas in the south of town will be remaining CLOSED due to recent storm damage, w...ater issues, previous vehicle damage and to allow for rehabilitation of these areas. Large rainfalls over July and August has made many trees unstable and grassed areas saturated. While this is disappointing, it’s best that these areas be made safe and usable for the summer holiday period. See more
15.01.2022 Something else we need to mention: whilst postal services have continuously operated to Walhalla since 1864, we really need everybody's support to use the service - particularly once the town opens up after COVID restrictions are eventually relaxed. Did you know that quite a few bills such as any Council and water rates can be paid at Walhalla - and we get a small commission on each transaction! Just look at your bill and the payment section will show where it can be paid. Also, Christmas is on the horizon - why not come up to Walhalla post COVID and send your Christmas cards, and every envelope gets the genuine Walhalla postmark.
14.01.2022 What are the Seven Historic Wonders of Baw Baw Shire? The poll is now open, and you can vote from here - but you do need to be a member of the Gippsland History Group to vote.
14.01.2022 An interesting historical milestone from the WGR.
13.01.2022 The Long Tunnel Mine - surface workings, 1910. In the centre of the photo is the quartz crushing battery, opened with great ceremony by then State Premier Sir Thomas Bent in 1908. The new battery facility was the culmination of almost ten years reinvestment by the Long Tunnel Co aimed at unlocking new gold reserves more than 1000m underground. Unfortunately, despite the advanced mining and gold processing technologies introduced, the Long Tunnel Mine closed in December 1914 ...due to lack of payable ore, labour shortage caused by WW1 and a major drought. Until recent years it was the largest individual gold producer in Victoria. Photo: W.H. Lee, Walhalla This photograph is part of an album, the Seven Historic Wonders of the Baw Baw Shire. It currently contains more than seven items, as it is in preparation for a poll. To see the whole album, start at https://www.facebook.com//a.174618580886/1746185875536083/
13.01.2022 While sorting through some photographs I stumbled across this early photo of Walhalla (circa 1878) which is taken from an unusual vantage point. We are really lucky to have so many excellent photographs of Walhalla.
13.01.2022 After almost 12 months of renovations the Museum is almost ready for re-opening. Here is a sneak peek of the work so far. We hope to have our collections back on display in the next couple of weeks.
12.01.2022 If you're able to comply with the new Covid travel rules and thinking about coming up to Walhalla over the next few days, watch out for this brand new duck family! They are moving all around town and have been seen crossing the road, so make sure you obey the Walhalla road rule 'Ducks have right of way'. The Corner Stores shop is open Saturday and Sunday (but not the Museum, currently undergoing a major transformation).
12.01.2022 Our landline phone at Walhalla Railway Station is out of order and we aren't anticipating it will be fixed till Monday. For any urgent enquiries, please call th...e station mobile 0491 741822. Our online booking system is also affected, so we suggest arriving at the station at least 20 minutes before scheduled departure times, as the trains are busy this weekend. We do apologize for any inconvenience! WGR
10.01.2022 There is some great Spring flowering in town at the moment - if you're a regional Victorian and would like to come and visit, Kitty's Cafe and Walhalla Lodge Hotel are both open for meals tomorrow. (The Long Tunnel Extended Mine tours and Walhalla Goldfields Railway remain closed until further notice). And whilst renovations at our new look Museum are not quite complete, the Corner Stores and Post Office is open every day apart from Tuesday and Thursday. We have some great local books and gift items available as well as our Trembath's grocery store.
10.01.2022 Great to see the WGR "back on track!"
10.01.2022 Looking for information about Walhalla's Criterion Hotel - authoritive please. We have information in the archives, trove news articles, some information from Robert K. Cole's Index of Victorian hotels and searched through our books. A few things we know -Mary Jane Jacomb ran the hotel for many years until it was delicensed in 1913. - It was possibly the hotel Warwick armstrong said he could hit a six and land a ball on the roof from the cricket ground as the Star was too... far away. -Owner John Newton Jacomb played cricket for Victoria and Otago, played football for carlton FC, he was possibly the first CFC player to break his leg and may have been CFCs first goal kicker. Plus all the information on the information sign pictured. (1897, November 20). Weekly Times (Melbourne, Vic. : 1869 - 1954), p. 17-20 (SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE WEEKLY TIMES). 08.01.2022 A short video on one of Walhalla's recently renovated cottages. The cottage was built in 1957 but aesthetically it never fitted in. Sancreed Cottage is now owned by WH&DL Vice President Brian Brewer and his wife Joanne who were responsible for its renovation. It now resembles the cottage that occupied the site prior to the November 1888 fire. It now operates as short stay accomodation.
07.01.2022 IMPORTANT NOTICE We regret to advise that due to the Victorian Government's just-announced Stage 4 lockdown, all scheduled train services are cancelled until at least Saturday 20 February. Our office will automatically refund prebooked tickets and we hope you will return at a later time.

06.01.2022 This Album is a work in Progress - there are still sites to be added. Apologies if you are seeing this without spacing - does not seem to be working. HISTORY MONTH The Gippsland History group is asking local people to nominate significant historical sites for its History Month poll, which will include the Seven Historical Wonders of Baw Baw Shire. ... Other municipalities in Gippsland will do the same and each Council area's top nominations will be aggregated to find out the top seven for Gippsland as a whole. Voting will run from 1-23 October with a Gippsland-wide poll during the final week. Our poll will open on 8 October. We are carrying this out on behalf of all of Baw Baw Shire - whilst the Walhalla area clearly has a wealth of assets, there are many other places in the Shire which have a claim to important heritage significance. These are some early thoughts, we are still working on the final list for voting. However we do know that possibly only the top three from one postcode will make it through to the final. - Long Tunnel Mine, Walhalla (the richest gold mine in Victorian history, not to be confused with the smaller Long Tunnel Extended Mine, open for tours) - Walhalla Goldfields Railway (including Thomson bridge) - Walhalla Historic Area, including the cemetery, post office, rotunda, masonic hall, corner store, cricket ground, Long Tunnel Extended mine, fire station. What else? Private homes are not being included. - Brunton's Bridge - Coopers Creek - Mountain Goldfields - Walhalla to Matlock - Noojee railway Trestle Bridge - Warragul Railway Station - main building including restored Refreshment Rooms - Queen St Warragul - rare substantially intact heritage landscape - Timber tramways and bridges If you're in Baw Baw Shire - what do you think is an important heritage asset that should be recognized? 06.01.2022 In 1910, William Harrison Lee published an album of Walhalla images to celebrate opening of the narrow gauge railway from Moe - titled 'The Switzerland of Australia'. After a brief dusting a few weeks back, we had sustained snow for quite a while today - it looked fantastic! Here are a few shots from the afternoon.
06.01.2022 75 years ago Victory in the Pacific. Lest we forget. National Archives posted a fascinating feature today.
05.01.2022 Great news from the Railway - no more COVID restrictions on passenger numbers as of Boxing Day!
05.01.2022 It looks like the rules say people can't travel to their holiday houses after midnight.
04.01.2022 Today, the Railway had a very respectful ceremony to mark Remembrance Day, complete with bagpipes and the last post played on a bugle. The Walhalla Railway Sta...tion was the final departure point from their home town for a large number of young Walhalla men, quite a few of whom were killed in action. Over a 100 years later, the town of Walhalla never forgets those who paid the supreme sacrifice. Here are a couple of images and sounds from today. See more
03.01.2022 A book will be available at the Museum for everyone to sign who knew and loved Mal. It is difficult to call in with restrictions so if you would like to email your message or fond memories of Mal we would be happy to include it in the book. email: [email protected]
02.01.2022 The train is back on Wednesday - please check out the advice below.
01.01.2022 It’s a very sad day for Walhalla today - we have lost Sally Barton, a towering figure in town for many decades. Sincerest sympathies to the Barton family.
01.01.2022 All very quiet in Walhalla this week as we wait for things to get back to normal. Meanwhile, the blossom and daffodils are really starting to make themselves known!
