25.01.2022 Where is your favourite SA rail trail? The Coast to Vines trail begins at the train station at Marino Rocks and follows an old railway corridor south to McLaren Vale and Willunga. The section from McLaren Vale to Willunga is known as the Shiraz Trail and takes you along a scenic path, taking in wineries and vineyards. ... 24.01.2022 Explore Adelaide's newly opened Hope Valley Reservoir, with forested areas and views over the reservoir to the hills. Walk across the dam wall to the park in the north western corner on a 2.3km return short walk, or do a 5.2km full loop of the reservoir reserve. Open 7.30am 8pm daily, closed Christmas Day. Take a picnic and enjoy the shelters and picnic tables, or sit in one of the dam wall shelters and enjoy views over the reservoir to the hills (the tall fence between you... and the view is heavy but necessary on a dam wall!). 23.01.2022 Have you seen the new Australian Warning System? The Australian Warning System is a new national approach to information and warnings during emergencies and natural disasters like bushfire, flood, storm, extreme heat and severe weather. The System uses a nationally consistent set of icons, like those above, to show incidents on website and apps. The System has been designed based on feedback and research across the country, and aims to deliver a more consistent approach to ...these types of emergencies, no matter where you are. Australia’s fire and emergency services aim to provide you with timely and relevant information during emergencies. Remember don’t wait for a warning. Take action quickly and don’t delay. For more information, head to: https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/warnings-and-/about-cfs-warnings/

21.01.2022 How do you improve the transport system (to decrease congestion, increase health, decrease cost, increase mood and wellbeing, decrease carbon emissions, and many other things)? Enable active transport. Provide safe, connected, enjoyable routes for people who choose to walk and cycle. When this is prioritised, every user of the transport system gets better outcomes. 21.01.2022 WHAT’S IN YOUR PACK? We asked Melanie Sjoberg (President of the Friends of The Heysen Trail) what she takes with her on a day walk, and where she loves to walk! Rain jacket, rain pants and pack cover depending on weather. Beanie and Sun Hat. Sunglasses. Fly net - necessary in some areas. 19.01.2022 According to Dr. Jo Barton, Senior Lecturer of the School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences at the University of Essex, you can improve your self-esteem and your mood with just five minutes of exposure to nature. Why does it work so quickly? As Barton shares, exposure to nature helps us switch from voluntary attention, which draws on our reserves of focus and energy, to involuntary attention, which requires less focus and energy. This allows us to recover from mental fatigue. https://hbr.org/20//dont-underestimate-the-power-of-a-walk

19.01.2022 Have your kids just gone back to school? Leading advocacy agencies Walking SA, Bike Adelaide and Heart Foundation, are urging all levels of government to radically rethink school precincts to prioritise children’s physical and mental health and safety by providing safe, enjoyable walking and cycling routes to school. 08.01.2022 Have you seen the 7 principles of LEAVE NO TRACE? Principle 5: MINIMISE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS "Fires vs. Stoves: The use of campfires, once a necessity for cooking and warmth, is steeped in history and tradition. Some people would not think of camping without a campfire. Campfire building is also an important skill for every camper. Yet, the natural appearance of many areas has been degraded by the overuse of fires and an increasing demand for firewood. The development of lightwei...ght efficient camp stoves has encouraged a shift away from the traditional fire for cooking. Stoves have become essential equipment for minimum-impact camping. They are fast, flexible and eliminate firewood availability as a concern in campsite selection. Stoves operate in almost any weather conditionand they Leave No Trace." 07.01.2022 By designing for car dependency, we plan for poor health. The planning system needs to change to make cycling and walking easy and attractive choices, giving people a chance to change their travel behaviours to local shops, schools and amenities: https://bit.ly/2I5jCTG

07.01.2022 Excellent visualisation explaining why we need to prioritise walking, cycling and public transport. This is not to exclude private vehicles, they are part of the mix, but instead to shift the delivery of transport infrastructure from the historic norm (prioritising cars), to the evidence-based, well-planned future (recognising that prioritising walking, cycling & PT brings greater efficiency and a raft of other benefits to ALL transport users). 04.01.2022 Have you seen the 7 PRINCIPLES OF LEAVE NO TRACE? Principle 3: DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Check out all the great tips here: https://lnt.org/why/7-principles/dispose-of-waste-properly/... Here are a couple to get you started: TOILET PAPER:Use toilet paper sparingly and use only plain, white, non-perfumed brands. Toilet paper must be disposed of properly! It should either be thoroughly buried in a cat hole or placed in plastic bags and packed out. Natural toilet paper has been used by many campers for years. When done correctly, this method is as sanitary as regular toilet paper, but without the impact problems. Popular types of natural toilet paper include stones, vegetation and snow. Obviously, some experimentation is necessary to make this practice work for you, but it is worth a try! Burning toilet paper in a cat hole is not recommended. Toilet Paper in Arid Lands: Placing toilet paper in plastic bags and packing it out as trash is the best way to Leave No Trace in a desert environment. Toilet paper should not be burned. This practice can result in wildfires. Tampons TAMPONS:Proper disposal of tampons requires placing them in plastic bags and packing them out. Do not bury them because they don’t decompose readily and animals may dig them up. It will take a very hot, intense fire to burn them completelycampfires are not an adequate solution. Urine URINE:Urine has little direct effect on vegetation or soil. In some instances, urine may draw wildlife which are attracted to the salts. They can defoliate plants and dig up soil. Urinating on rocks, pine needles, and gravel is less likely to attract wildlife. Diluting urine with water from a water bottle can help minimize negative effects. 02.01.2022 What does a dementia-friendly trail look like? Ms Rogan said the final design of the trail was centred around ensuring there was something in the park for people at all stages of dementia from early on when mobility was fine, through to when people might need assistance. Paths are wide and sturdy enough to give access to people with wheelchairs or frames. There also are seats at regular intervals and large nooks for groups to gather.... Principle 1: PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE "Adequate trip planning and preparation helps backcountry travelers accomplish trip goals safely and enjoyably, while simultaneously minimizing damage to the land. Rangers often tell stories of campers they have encountered who, because of poor planning and unexpected conditions, degrade backcountr...y resources and put themselves at risk" Read more here: https://lnt.org/why/7-principles/plan-ahead-and-prepare/ Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics
