17.01.2022 On this day in 1941, the historic battle between the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney (II) and the disguised German auxiliary cruiser HSK Kormoran took place. The loss of HMAS Sydney (II) with its entire crew of 645 men is Australia's worst naval tragedy. 80 Kormoran sailors also lost their lives. ... Today, exactly 79 years on, we pay our respects to all of the men who lost their lives on that fateful day. To mark this anniversary, we invite you to view two wide-ranging conversations that were recently produced to accompany Deep Light: Illuminating the Wrecks of Sydney and Kormoran, a poignant exhibition which features remarkable footage and imagery of the wrecks taken at the wreck sites in 2015 by the Western Australian Museum and Curtin University. To view these conversations, please visit: http://museum.wa.gov.au/conversation-sydney-kormoran-project This free exhibition is on display at the WA Shipwrecks Museum until Sunday 31 January 2021.

11.01.2022 THE FENIANS FESTIVAL - ANNUAL WILD GOOSE LECTURE The last convict ship to Australia, the Hougoumont, arrived in Fremantle in January 1868. On board were 62 Irish Fenians who published a hand-written newspaper, the Wild Goose, on their 90 day journey. To commemorate the literary achievement, this year's Wild Goose Lecture will be presented from Ireland (via video link) to a live audience in the NWS Shipping Theatre at the WA Maritime Museum at 4 pm on Sunday 13 June. The prese...nters, Dr Patrick Maume and Mairead Maume, are relatives of Hougoumont 62 Fenian John Sarsfield Casey. Grab your tickets and after the lecture, head to the Kelp Bar at Kidogo Arthouse to finish off the evening with music and song. You can contribute to the collection at the WA Shipwrecks Museum during this 16 day campaign to help support those experiencing the challenge of family violence.... See www.communities.wa.gov.au/projects/16-days-in-wa/ for more discussion and ideas for how we can all contribute.
