20.01.2022 Last week, National Mental Health Commissioner, Professor Helen Milroy, was awarded the 2020 Australian Mental Health Prize in a joint win with Professor Gordon Parker, founder of Black Dog Institute. Professor Milroy is a descendant of the Palyku people of the Pilbara region here in Western Australia and was born and educated in Perth. She was recognised with the prestigious 2020 Australian Mental Health Prize for her passionate work and advocacy for the mental health needs... of children, and those affected by social, cultural and systemic trauma. WAAMH was honoured to host Professor Milroy at the WA Mental Health Conference in 2019 (pictured), and congratulates her and her fellow winner, Professor Parker, for their outstanding contributions to mental health in Australia and here in WA in particular. Upon receiving the award, Professor Milroy commented, I believe Australia’s greatest hope for the future rests in the potential of our children. I look forward to a greater focus and investment in our children, their family and community. I hope we can feel proud when we look back, knowing we did everything to give children the opportunity to thrive, to support them when they faltered and to make sure they receive the most comprehensive and well-resourced mental health services available. That would be something to celebrate. 16.01.2022 WAAMH welcomes the long-awaited Productivity Commission Mental Health Inquiry Report, released yesterday. The report contains 22 recommended reforms encompassing approximately 100 actions, across a wide range of mental health services and supports across the nation. Recommendations in the report focus on 5 key areas, including prevention and early intervention, recovery-focused healthcare, services beyond health, training and work, and key enablers of change. WAAMH is pleased... to note the strong focus on prevention and community supports, the integration of mental health services, and the social determinants of health. The report also highlights the need for alternatives to attending Emergency Departments, and the required whole-of-government, cross-sectoral approach to achieving a person-centered mental health system. The reinforcement of the crucial role that social determinants play in mental health is especially welcomed by WAAMH. The wrap around supports that address these social determinants, (in particular employment and safe housing, which continue to demonstrate their interconnectedness with good mental health), are vital to ensuring people aren’t just supported by the system in the short term, but are given every opportunity to live full and contributing lives in the long term. The recommendation to expand the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model is fantastic to see. IPS is an international evidence-based model and has some of the highest success rates for securing meaningful employment in the competitive labour market for people with mental health challenges. WAAMH's IPS WORKS project supports 24 sites across Australia to deliver this model. The Productivity Commission report underpins the fundamental imbalance that exists in our mental health systems at both national and state levels, speaking to the over-reliance on acute hospital-based supports, and the urgent need for investment into community supports, which are far more cost effective compared to bed-based treatments. While the report is extensive and will require further analysis, WAAMH has made its preliminary comments from initial readings of the first volume of the report available here: https://waamh.org.au//productivity-commission-mental-healt We look forward to updating you with more in-depth commentary soon. #mentalhealth #auspol #balancethesystem

14.01.2022 Congratulations to the McGowan Government on the opening of WA’s first therapeutic women’s refuge, Warlang Bidi - Supporting Women and Children. The refuge, which was opened in the Peel region, is a state-first initiative to provide accommodation for women and children escaping violence, as well as coordinated and tailored services for family and domestic violence victims who may have mental health concerns and/or harm from alcohol and other drugs. Family and domestic violenc...e prevention and supports like the Warlang Bidi refuge are integral factors in lessening the mental health issues in women and children experiencing or at risk of family and domestic violence. Having safe, stable accommodation with access to appropriate mental health and alcohol and other drug supports will help to build capacity, resilience and safety for WA women and children and support them to rebuild their futures. #16daysinwa
13.01.2022 Congratulations to the Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia - AHCWA and its Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services members on the launch of the history-making AHCWA Mappa Platform. Mappa is a free-to-use online mapping platform designed to clarify the health and mental health care being delivered across remote, rural and metro areas in WA. The platform provides comprehensive, culturally appropriate and reliable information for health services, health profe...ssionals, clients, consumers and patients, and their communities. The AHCWA Mappa Platform is the meeting of three worlds: The patient or client and consumer world, the healthcare world, and the technological world, to help Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people and their communities to better-access health services as close as possible to family, home and country. Well done on bringing this platform together and congratulations again to AHCWA, their supporting partners, and to the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services that inspired the design and development of this important tool to strengthen the patient and consumer journey. The right care, in the right place, at the right time. Explore the Mappa site here: http://mappa.com.au

02.01.2022 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures often incorporate mental health into a broader holistic framework of Social Emotional Wellbeing. This #NAIDOCweek, WAAMH recognises that inequities in mental health outcomes exist for Aboriginal people in WA. The Prevent Support Heal State Election Platform outlines several election asks that seek to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' wellbeing, including: - Investing into Aboriginal Community Controlled Heal...th services with social and emotional wellbeing programs that are Aboriginal developed and led, - Establishing a local grants fund to support culturally based wellbeing and suicide prevention programs, and, - Facilitating the continued improvement of cultural competency of mainstream mental health and alcohol and other drug services.
