25.01.2022 We're talking food on World Food Day... What food (or beverage) says "WA" to you? Or maybe you'd like to share how you'd describe quintessential Western Australian tucker to a tourist? We’d love to know! Food is an expression of our culture and it helps shape who we are. Here in WA, we have so many different cultures and a wide range of superb produce at our fingertips, from succulent seafood and truly world-class wines to grass-fed beef and highly prized black truffles. ... Part of the Reflections gallery in the new Museum will focus on the role of food as a way of sharing culture and traditions. After all, we learn a lot about our identity through food and from family or other influential people in our lives. Share your thoughts this beautiful Friday afternoon on anything related to WA food or drinks. Delicious! Frances Andrijich
24.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day. This day is special to Australians as at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, all Australians are encouraged to observe one minute of silence to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts. In honour of this day, we’d like to share an inspiring story of courage and compassion from the Second World War, as told by the Museum’s Head of History, Stephen Anstey.... The object at the centre of this WA story which you’ll see in the Connections gallery of the new Museum is a pink hand-embroidered handkerchief. Watch this short video to find out why this object was one Australian soldier’s most treasured possession. #LestWeForget

24.01.2022 The Museum strives for authenticity and accuracy in all of its work. We have updated a multimedia display in the Connections gallery at the new WA Museum Boola Bardip. One label stated that COVID-19 originated in mainland China. The World Health Organisation is still investigating its origin, therefore this reference has been updated. The other information related to Taiwan. A map has been updated to reflect Australian Government policy.
22.01.2022 Howzat! This WA invention aims to end all backyard cricket feuds. It’s called Backyard Bash and it’s a digital cricket wicket invented by Western Australian and Busselton father, Jon Rutgers. Inspired by the frustration and arguments associated with keeping track of the score during games of backyard cricket, Jon dreamt up Backyard Bash. Jon shared his story with us for the Innovations gallery of WA Museum Boola Bardip, saying: ... I grew up playing countless hours of backyard cricket with family and friends during summer. The games although centred around fun would inevitably turn competitive and require a scoring method. If Mum was too busy to sit and keep count for us the same problem would always surface how do we keep score? Backyard Bash was born as a solution to this problem. The wicket features a scoreboard, speakers, lights, sound effects, bluetooth connectivity, and bail sensors that update the score if they are dislodged. Learn more about the game here > https://backyardbash.com.au/

14.01.2022 The Reflections gallery explores some of our State’s many stories surrounding the adage: ‘necessity is the mother of invention’. This chair made from whale vertebrae was created by John Withnell for his wife Emma out of what he could find locally. The Withnells left Fremantle for the ‘North District’ in March 1864, Emma became the first European woman in the Roebourne area, near Karratha. Can you imagine? The family endured shipwreck, great adversity and stock losses. Emma wa...s often forced to cope on her own during John’s frequent absences for work, she was forever pragmatic and resilient, making the most out of very little. This whalebone chair represents the requirement to 'make do' in challenging landscapes, demonstrating the ingenuity and creativity of WA’s remote early European settlers. They responded to the tyranny of distance, drought, isolation and economic hardship through innovation and the use of basic materials. In the Reflections gallery, you can explore how the size and isolation of Western Australia has defined its people, places and inventions. We can’t wait until you visit.

13.01.2022 Our palaeontologist Dr Mikael Siversson took some time amongst the busy (and noisy) Wild Life gallery install to reveal how the huge sauropod dinosaur model was created. Mikael and the team used a specific sauropod footprint from Western Australia’s Dampier Peninsula near Broome our dinosaur coast! It’s the first time that a model has been created using real sauropod footprints from the Broome Sandstone, which were left between 127 to 140 million years ago.... Tough to imagine this animal stomping around WA this long ago, isn’t it? Work on this model began way back in 2014, so it’s a big deal pardon the pun and the second largest object in the Museum, the first being Otto the blue whale. You’ll see the sauropod very soon we can’t wait for you to visit! 12.01.2022 Today is World AIDS Day. Held on 1 December each year, it raises awareness about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It’s also a time for people to show their support for those living with HIV and to commemorate those who have passed away. Judy Nemer organised the creation of this ‘Window of Memories’ quilt to remember those who lost their lives to HIV/AIDS in WA. She sewed a patch for her son Greg, who passed away from the virus, and patches for two of his friends who also ...passed away. Judy arranged for others to add to the quilt and donated the item to our collections. Greg was a local activist who advocated for a greater understanding of HIV and AIDS through organisations like the West Australian AIDS Council. He was involved in education programs where he urged the community not to be afraid of people with HIV/AIDS. Following the loss of her son, Judy continued to support other people living with HIV and their families and loved ones. Judy said: This quilt is so that we can publicly acknowledge their lives and our love for them. It is a visible symbol of our compassion and loving response to an epidemic of loss, fear and hatred. Thanks for sharing your story Judy. In the Reflections gallery you’ll see the Wall of Love and Loss, which explores Western Australian stories of love and heartbreak, devotion and commitment, like this one. WA AIDS Council

10.01.2022 This is a Swan River kodj. These tools were only made by Noongar people of the South west and used for many things, such as an axe, climbing trees, to knock down beehives or crack nuts and more. To share his perspective on this WA story through this object, here’s our Anthropology Registrar and Binjareb Noongar man, Brett Nannup. Woven throughout WA Museum Boola Bardip are the stories and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, recognising the primary r...ights of Australia’s first peoples in practicing and expressing their cultural heritage. #NAIDOC2020 #BoolaBardip

07.01.2022 This sculpture Helicopter chasing camels was created by Dianne Ungukalpi Golding in 2016, an accomplished artist and weaver represented by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers. It’s made from tjanpi (wild harvested grass), raffia, yarn, and wire and explores the impact of feral camels on her Country. It was acquired by the WA Museum in 2017, and you’ll be able to see it and other works in the Changes gallery of the new Museum.... Here, you'll learn more about how us humans have impacted the WA landscape and environment. Tjanpi Desert Weavers is a not-for-profit Indigenous social enterprise of Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women's Council. Out of a need for meaningful and appropriate employment, NPY members created Tjanpi to enable women on the lands to earn a regular income from selling their fibre art. Tjanpi supports the production and marketing of baskets, sculptures and seed jewellery made by over 400 artists from 28 remote communities across three states - WA, NT and SA.

03.01.2022 This wooden horse was hand-built and painted by Perth man, Percy Wright. He was well known for putting on very exciting fun fairs that would appear for three months every summer. This horse was from one of his merry-go-rounds at Percy Wright’s Fun Fair, held at South Beach, Point Walter and Leighton Beach in the in the 1920s and 1930s. At the start of the season, Percy would take all of the pieces of his merry-go-rounds, which he stored in his shed in his Palmyra house, and t...ransport them to the fairground where he’d assemble the ride, piece by piece, for the people of Perth. In the nine-month off season, he’d repaint and repair his merry-go-rounds at his house, readying them for the next season’s crowds, sun and fun. In the late 1940s, our friends at the Perth Zoo rebuilt the old merry-go-round used at Point Walter. They installed new horses that had mechanisms allowing them to move up and down their vertical pole, and a new electric motor was provided. The panels that hid the internal workings of the merry-go-round were also repainted with popular Disney characters (now replaced). You can still ride it today when you visit the Perth Zoo! This and more objects from Percy’s Fun Fair will be on display in the Reflections gallery of WA Museum Boola Bardip.
03.01.2022 For those playing our quiz on Instagram Stories today... This monstrosity is ambergris and ladies, you may be currently 'wearing' it! Yes, we agree, it’s not much to look at, but this is one of the most valuable natural products to be found in the sea. So what is it? Ambergris is a solid, waxy substance formed in the second intestine of the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) during the digestion of giant squid, a favoured food source.... It’s found only in about 1-5% of these whales, so it’s not a common substance. Despite its somewhat unsavoury origins, ambergris is used as a fixing agent in perfumery, and very expensive perfumes at that! You'll learn more about this and WA's whaling industry in WA Museum Boola Bardip. Because ambergris is a whale product, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) regulates its possession and movement in the Commonwealth Marine Area. It’s highly regulated via Australia's obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). If you happen to find ambergris, you should report the find to the Department of Parks and Wildlife. Museum of the Great Southern we thought you'd like this one. G'day from Perth to our amazing team in Albany!
03.01.2022 Free exhibition on now at WA Shipwrecks Museum, in Fremantle. The World War Two encounter between HMAS Sydney (II) and the disguised German raider HSK Kormoran off the Western Australian coast stands as Australia’s most tragic naval disaster. 81 men from Kormoran were killed and 318 survived. The lives of all 645 men on Sydney were lost. For more than 66 years, the location of the two ships remained a mystery. ... Then, in 2008, the Finding Sydney Foundation and shipwreck expert David Mearns found the wrecks off Shark Bay. This poignant exhibition showcases remarkable images and footage captured during the expedition, interviews with the research team, the moving 3D film From Great Depths, and personal reflections from descendants and family members of Sydney's crew.
02.01.2022 Some behind-the-scenes images snapped by CDM:Studio, a specialist model making company here in Perth. The talented team used digital sculpting and 3D printing to create more than 100 realistic models for WA Museum Boola Bardip, which they also meticulously hand painted. What you see here is a model of an ammonite an extinct type of cephalopod, about 120 million years old that had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern nautilus.... It’s a huge advantage having this level of model making expertise here in Perth because we can work closely together on each model from start to finish. Creating these realistic models using these contemporary techniques means we’re able to display replicas of animals and plants that were not feasible before. You’ll have to come and see the ammonite model suspended from the ceiling in the Portals to the Past exhibition inside the Wild Life gallery, not long now!
