21.01.2022 2020 has been a particularly challenging year for many people across the world amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. For several families and the community of Esperance, there have been a number of tragedies along our coastline that has had a significant impact upon us all. Esperance Police in partnership with our emergency services volunteers were honoured to host Commissioner Chris Dawson APM, Deputy Commissioner Col Blanch, DFES Commissioner Darren Klemm and Surf Lifesaving WA Ope...rations Manager Chris Peck for a special awards ceremony at Twilight Beach. One of the most moving aspects of the ceremony was the presence of three families who have suffered through the tragic loss of Eric Birighitti, Gary Johnson and Andrew Sharpe this year. It meant so much to our police and emergency services volunteers who were in attendance to have those family members present to show their appreciation and support. The ceremony commenced with Gail Reynolds-Adamson and Andrew Beck doing a 'Welcome to Country' for those in attendance. Senior Constable Carol Petersen, Constable Maddison Ugle and CSO Marilyn Jackson were presented with their Aboriginal Service Medals. Constable Ugle was also presented with her Cadets WA medal. Senior Constable Brendan Purdy received his WA Police Force medal in recognition of his 10 years of ethical service. Constable Iain Mack Johnston received special commendation for bravery in the disarming and apprehension of an armed offender in Esperance in May 2020. Reverend Robert Dummermuth received a certificate of recognition following 10 years of voluntary service as a Volunteer Police Chaplain. Sergeant Brad Bell, Senior Constable Alan Trist, Senior Constable Luke Mcculloch, Senior Constable Chris Jacob, Dave Macmahon (Surf Lifesaving WA), Jacob Oversby (Surf Lifesaving WA) and Ashley Skinner (Volunteer Marine Rescue) received the national award for search and rescue. To conclude the ceremony, DFES Area Officer Steve Petersen, husband of our very own Senior Constable Carol Petersen, received a promotion from Area Officer to District Officer.
