24.01.2022 With such perfect Easter boating weather, we have relocated our third vessel "The Darbyshire III" to Hastings to cope with the increase in calls for assistance ...on Westernport. The skipper and crew used perfect conditions yesterday to plan a navigation/local knowledge trip from Mornington to Hastings via water. Please be safe out there and if in trouble call 000 and ask for Water Police or 0419 233 999 to speak to one of our 24 hour Operational members. (Thanks Jenny for great the photos)

13.01.2022 #BREAKING: The 76th annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race will not be proceeding in 2020 due to #COVID19 concerns following greater Sydney's classification by Tasmania as a 'medium risk' area. #9News | Nightly at 6.00pm

10.01.2022 With a couple of rescues today, TX1 is just returning from a search for a 45 yo female and a 5 year old child. They decided to go for a paddle on a board off C...oronet Bay. Unfortunately the extremely strong easterly combined with tide, soon swept them out to sea. The Police Air-wing was called, and was quick to spot them 1/2 way between Coronet and Elizabeth Island. A passer by was able to take the 2 on-board, and with support of 2 x LSV PWC's, and VMR they were taken to a waiting ambulance for observation. Both are ok, and relieved to be back on shore.

07.01.2022 COVID-19 PUTS LEISURE BOATING AND FISHING ON HOLD Thought you could escape the coronavirus by grabbing the boat and heading out on the water for the day? Thi...nk again. Maritime Safety Victoria is asking Victorians to stop all forms of recreational boating to help stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Victoria has introduced Stage 3 restrictions which means there are four reasons to leave your house: 1) food and supplies 2) exercise 3) medical care 4) work and education if necessary. To be clear, the Premier has described exercise as ‘a walk round the block or a bike ride to stretch your legs and get some fresh air’. Maritime Safety Victoria says this does not include recreational boating.

05.01.2022 Have you ever set off a flare? Do you know how to? Our crews have been extremely busy since Friday with multiple rescues being conducted and many people being b...rought back to the safety of the Harbour. Last night at 2230 hours the call went out for a rescue crew out of Mornington. The details were a little scant however it was confirmed that 3 people were in a vessel somewhere near Dromana and had no engine power or electrical power (no nav lights or GPS). As usual a crew scrambled to get the vessel on the water. It is common for the crews to contact the people in trouble via phone when they are on the water firstly to let them know that a vessel is on their way to them and so that further details can be gained to pinpoint where they are, ensure they are safe and have lifejackets on. The details of the recuse last night weren’t adding up and what quickly became apparent is that the vessel was not where they thought they were, they were in the shipping channel/ fairway with a large commercial ship bearing down on them. VMR in conjunction with the Water Police Rescue Coordination Centre and Victorian Ports VTS operators organised for the stricken vessel to set off a red (night) flare to establish the vessels exact location. The photo in the post shows the red flare from 8nm away. VMR has state of the art electronics on their vessel including night vision (FLIR) cameras, radars, AIS to name a few. VMR used this equipment to establish that the vessel was directly in the path of an outbound ship and VTS spoke with the Pilot on that ship to ensure they were aware of the situation. Thankfully the ship passed approximately 150m from the stricken vessel. This rescue was completed successfully and demonstrates how well the different agencies work together to deliver marine search and rescue services to the boating public in Victoria. This was a very close call for the occupants of the vessel and this rescue causes us to ask, do you have flares on board your vessel? Are they in date and most importantly do you know how to use them if you need to? Like any safety equipment on board its on useful if you know where to access it and use it quickly when required. The instructions on how to use a flare are on the flare itself. Stay safe out on the water.

03.01.2022 This morning at 10:00am our Westernport vessel TX1 was tasked to assist a vessel in trouble off Cape Schanck. Arriving on scene it was discovered the vessel had... done a high pressure fuel pump, so the long tow back to Yaringa. began. After a round trip of 80nm (148 klm) the vessel was made secure, with a comment "we have wasted a whole days fishing" and not much else. 1 After clearing that job, they were tasked to another vessel off the south west corner of French Island. In total 440 litres of fuel was used. It is worth pointing out that 2 members Neil and Ted were on the water from 1030 until 1630 (6 hours). At 4:40 they both headed back to their respective places of work. Thanks guys, you are both heroes!! As i post this we have just received another call for assistance from VicPol.

03.01.2022 Sydney to Hobart yacht race cancelled due to NSW coronavirus outbreak The 2020 Sydney to Hobart yacht rate is cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak in N...ew South Wales, organisers have announced. https://www.abc.net.au//sydney-to-hobart-yacht-ra/13001142 Sydney to Hobart yacht race Covid-19 outbreak forces cancellation of Sydney to Hobart yacht race Border restrictions make running of race impossible ‘First time in 76 years the race will not be conducted’ Australian Associated Press Sat 19 Dec 2020 The Sydney to Hobart yacht race has been cancelled for the first time in its history, with organisers admitting border restrictions forced by Sydney’s coronavirus outbreak made it impossible to stage. We are bitterly disappointed to cancel the race this year, especially considering the plans and preparations we had put in place to have a Covid-safe race, said CYCA commodore Noel Cornish, announcing the cancellation on Sunday night, less than six days out from the scheduled Boxing Day start. We were so well prepared to run the race ... this is the first time in 76 years the race will not be conducted. The primary consideration for the club continues to be the safety of competitors, members and staff along with the health and welfare of the people of NSW and Tasmania. The final blow to the race was struck when Tasmania Premier Peter Gutwein announced in the afternoon that all people arriving from Sydney would have to undergo 14 days of quarantine. He confirmed no exceptions would be made for the Sydney to Hobart race, admitting that would make it very difficult for organisers to go ahead with the marquee event. However, the race had already been in extreme doubt. Earlier in the day, NSW Health announced a further 23 Covid-19 cases, prompting the state government to enforce a lockdown in Sydney’s northern beaches area from 5pm on Saturday until midnight on Wednesday. Around 150 sailors registered for the event - about a third of the fleet’s crew - are in that hot spot area and not allowed to travel to Tasmania at all. It is unlikely the restrictions and advice will lift in the immediate future, said Cornish. As such the immense logistics involved in reorganising and running a significant sporting event such as the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, as well as the planning and preparation required by crews, precludes the club from postponing the race. Around 100 entries were initially expected for this year’s race, but numbers had dropped back to 75 yachts as travel restrictions and economic circumstances impact on participants from around the world. https://www.theguardian.com//organisers-hustle-to-save-syd
