15.01.2022 A message from Aged Care to Australia Aged care services are working hard to keep older Australians safe - and we need your help. Aged care services are at the ...forefront of saving lives during the coronavirus pandemic, committed staff working harder than ever before to keep hundreds of thousands of vulnerable older Australians safe. For this, we say a heartfelt thank you to the aged care workforce for their outstanding dedication in challenging times, with limited resources. We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives in Australian aged care homes. However, the nation can be proud of the passion and commitment to minimise infections. We continue to employ lessons learnt from the catastrophic nursing home outbreaks and deaths we have seen overseas. Our response to the pandemic has been directed by the National Cabinets guidance on visitor restrictions, with enhanced resident protections put in place by some facilities in response to local risk factors. These decisions were not taken lightly and have been made with the sole intent to save lives. 15.01.2022 New polling shows Australians understand why aged care homes are limiting visitors to protect from COVID-19. A significant majority of Australians (69%) support... aged care homes in limiting visitors in order to protect older Australians from COVID-19. Only 10% oppose visitor bans. "Australia can be proud of our management of COVID-19 but we can't get get blasé about aged care because this is where our most vulnerable people live," said Patricia Sparrow, CEO of ACSA. Aged care, government and consumer peaks are working hard to negotiate consistent guidelines that will prevent the tragic tsunami of outbreaks weve seen in aged care homes overseas. "In most cases, visitors are understanding of the restrictions and we continue to ask for that understanding. We are also appealing to all Australians to do everything possible to protect older people and to reach out to support them by picking up the phone, Ms Sparrow said. 12.01.2022 This is a challenging time, particularly for the Victorian community and those most vulnerable - our older Australians and those delivering care services in bot...h residential and home care settings. ACSA encourages Australians to do everything possible to protect older people in the community as well as those residing in residential care facilities. We must not be blasé about aged care because we know that older Australians are those most vulnerable and we must be vigilant to protect their lives, ACSA CEO Patricia Sparrow said. At the top of our mind is the need to balance prevention of outbreaks with mental health, emotional and spiritual care and compassion for our older Australians. And to ensure in circumstances where a loved one is receiving palliative care or needs particular care and support that it can continue to be provided. The tragedy of this for older people and aged care workers is that they are at the frontline and vulnerable. We need to make sure that the aged care sector is fully equipped to continue to manage the risk COVID-19 presents to our clients and residents and staff. 04.01.2022 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is on 15 June each year, to focus attention one of the worst manifestations of ageism and inequality in our society: elder abuse.... Elder abuse is any act which causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust, such as a family member or friend. The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment or neglect. In many parts of the world elder abuse occurs with little recognition or response. Unfortunately it is a global social issue which affects the health, wellbeing, independence and human rights of millions of older people around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of all in the community. ACSA encourages all Australians to be aware of the serious issue of elder abuse. We all must do what we can to educate our community and help prevent it and safeguard the rights, dignity and independence of older people today and every day. #WEAAD #elderabuse #agedcare #olderpeople

04.01.2022 We are all playing our part to help flatten the curve. Lets continue to do the right thing, such as physical distancing and staying home where possible. The plan is working and we are saving lives. www.health.gov.au//novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert

03.01.2022 ACSA welcomes the important consultation on the financing of the aged care system started by the Royal Commission. "This is an important acknowledgement that th...ere is no escaping the need to substantially reform and increase funding to deliver the care older Australians need and want," ACSA CEO Patricia Sparrow said. "For too long the discussion about aged care has been swept under the carpet. It's high time we look to the future and have a serious discussion about how we are actually going to fund the system that older Australians need. "There are many possible financing options we can explore to set the aged care system up for success and the Royal Commission highlights a range of approaches. "It's time to have a serious community conversation about how to pay for the aged care older Australians deserve and then reform the system, so it can be delivered to them now and for the generations to come." 01.01.2022 According to new data released by Stewart Brown today, 60 per cent of aged care facilities recorded an operating loss for the nine months to March and occupancy... levels dropped to 92.1 per cent, down from 93.6 year-on-year. The numbers show that home care providers are also struggling. ACSA CEO Patricia Sparrow said the numbers were worrying enough on their own but even more alarming when considering the latest figures only cover the first month of the COVID-19 pandemic. Things are getting harder at an already difficult time for the aged care sector; our staff have been working overtime to protect older people from COVID-19, but were yet to receive the support required to cover increased COVID costs let alone arrest this financial decline. The numbers show that not-for-profit aged care providers cant be taken for granted. Were calling on the Morrison Government to supply aged care with the rescue package required to get us through COVID and address the ongoing funding issues. Read more > http://ow.ly/rNVA50A9QDj

01.01.2022 During summer, it’s important to check in with older relatives, neighbours and vulnerable people. There are many ways that you can help an older relative or fri...end to avoid isolation due to COVID-19 and heat related illnesses. Call or check in with them regularly to make sure they are okay. If alone, frail or bedridden, twice a day is recommended. Ensure an emergency contact list is easily available. Remind them to stay hydrated and ensure they have access to water. Make sure their home has adequate ventilation or airflow to help keep them cool. Remind them to avoid direct sun or unnecessary heat exposure wherever possible. Seek medical assistance immediately if there are any sign of heat related illnesses. For more info: https://www.health.gov.au//heatwave-health-tips-and-inform See more
