22.01.2022 I know it seems difficult these days to figure out your dog's ideal weight, this is a good visual aid showing various breeds! Keep your dog fit and healthy!

21.01.2022 Thank you so much Ian, Markus and Em at Kenilworth Veterinary Surgery for taking such good care of Blue (and me ). It always surprises me how much damage a tiny grass seed can wreak on a dog's body. Blue is feeling a bit sorry for herself and has to keep a compression bandage around her neck/ head for a few days (that will be an interesting challenge) but she seems to be doing ok so far

17.01.2022 *** Legendary Dogs *** Do you remember when Lassie tried to warn her family about the strange guy outside, and they yelled at her and she gave up and got quiet?... Do you remember when Rin Tin Tin grabbed the bad guy by the leg but let go as soon as the villain smacked him on the head? What about the legendary story of the dog who went to visit his owner’s grave every day, but then stayed home because it was drizzling outside? No? Me neither ... Our cultural identity is full of legendary dogs, some real, some fictional, most a little bit of both. From Sgt. Stubby (legitimate badass) to Old Yeller (fictional badass) we are in love with an ideal of dog. The most cliche dog name ever is Fido. It’ so cliche, no one actually uses it anymore; it feels like cheating. Fido is Latin for faithful and that is the single word that sums up the romantic lore of the dog. Our classic cultural coming of age tale is the one of a child and a dog. In these stories, the dog and child share many adventures together, danger and fear and salvation play a role. Courage, tenacity, and undying loyalty are also there. In the end, because we live longer than they do, the dog always dies, forever leaving paw prints on his owner’s life. But the child grows into adulthood through that loss. These stories are formulaic for a reason. They tell us a truth about ourselves, if not always about dogs. The dog represents all that we hold noble and worthy. In the end, he sacrifices his life so the hero can move into adulthood fully. We can’t fully appreciate responsibility of caring for ourselves and others until we understand death. There is no greater example of this than Travis shooting Old Yeller. Yeller was my dog. I’ll do it. With that act, Travis stepped into adulthood and took many of us tearily along with him. Both Yeller and Travis sacrificed themselves for the other. Yeller died because he protected Travis, and Travis killed his childhood innocence to save Yeller from the final torments of rabies. Sacrifice begets sacrifice. In their most ideal form, dogs represent all the things we desire in ourselves and in our loved ones. Everyone wants their dog to be a Lassie, or a Rin Tin Tin. They want a dog who will lay down his life to protect the family if needed. They want the dog who will face down a lion if necessary. They want to believe their dog’s loyalty knows no bounds. But they don’t understand what that actually means. That means they want a stubborn dog. Do you think a dog who will face a grizzly bear is one who is easily convinced to stop pulling on the leash, or barking at bicycles or chasing squirrels? Do you think the dog who winces at pop on prong collar is the same dog who will keeping going after being stabbed in neck by a potential murderer? The dog of heroism is no wilting flower. He is NOT biddable. He will not be dominated nor should he be! He is strong and he is brave and he is absolutely committed. He’s stubborn and that’s what makes him amazing. In fiction and in legend we idolize the stubborn dog. The dog who faces adversity stoically and does what needs to be done. The dog who freezes to death by his injured owner’s side? He’s stubborn as hell. The dog who drags his owner out of a burning car or home, overcoming his natural fear of fire? Stubborn too. There are no legends of dogs who are easily dissuaded once they set their minds to something. Those dogs exist, but they aren’t the ideal we hold up as the hero. No one writes stories about them. But when people encounter the potential hero dog, they get discouraged. "He’s so stubborn! I don’t think he can ever be trained. That misses the point. Stubborn is just another word for committed or dedicated or stalwart That dog, my friends, is a potential hero. If you take an adversarial approach to him, you will either break the heroic part of him, or you will fail in the attempt. But if you succeed in earning his trust and his respect and his devotion, you will see that stubbornness directed at doing the things you want him to do. That’s the dog who will stay put when told to do so, no matter what. You can’t make me move no matter what you do, is a different dog entirely from I don’t dare move or I’ll get in trouble. They may look the same on the outside, but they aren’t the same. Not at all. Stubborn dogs are the best dogs Stubborn is a virtue Don’t fight it. Cultivate it

16.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them... Lest we forget.
