13.01.2022 A new page in History Tuesday saw Local Controller (Warwick) John Newley ESM, welcome the Minister for Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs, Hon ...Stirling Hinchliffe MP, Mayor of Southern Downs Regional Council Vic Pennisi, invited guests and volunteers to the official opening of the Warwick SES Headquarters. Regrettably the COVID-19 restrictions saw a cap on the number of guests allowed at the opening, however the event was livestreamed for those who could not be there in person. The move to the new refurbished headquarters saw the group move from having two separate facilities located across Warwick has seen all the group’s activities and equipment moved to a single location. The improved facilities include offices, training rooms, crib room (allowing crews to relax whilst awaiting taskings, separate from the operational office area), a fully functional kitchen, change rooms, operations area, and maintenance area. The layout allows for the training rooms to become effective operations rooms during times of disaster with separation of the operations and response functions. Both the Hon Stirling Hinchliffe and Mayor Pennisi recognised the significant amount of work the SES Volunteers do in serving the people of Queensland. It was good to see them both fully engaged with our volunteers after the event, showing a real interest in their stories. The significant amount of work undertaken by our volunteers in apply for grants, managing projects and undertaking a lot of manual labour in making the dream become a reality was acknowledged by all of those in attendance. SES volunteers and their families spent a lot of their own time and money in making the facility fully operational. The partnership between volunteer groups was further strengthen and recognised with the Secretary of Warwick Lions Club giving the SES a donation to help the group develop their response abilities even further. Additional modifications are in the planning stage for the new HQ, including the installation of a new generator to provide our volunteers with the ability to operate around the clock in all types of conditions, particularly those of natural disasters. The community of not just Warwick but across the Southern Downs will benefit from this new HQ, as it will allow the expansion of training and operations during these COVID-19 restriction times. #haveyouvolunteered
