We were absolutely honoured to premiere his Viola Concerto with fellow composer and violist Brett Dean and conductor Fabien Gabel last year, a composition that is shortlisted for Work of the Year: Large Ensemble. 23.01.2022 Over the past week, WASO musicians performed for residents at RiverSea Aged Care in Mosman Park as part of our Music for the Ages program and also for guests from disability support agencies as part of our Connect program at the Perth Concert Hall. Audiences were treated to intimate performances and were able to take some time out of their day to listen to beautiful music. We believe that connecting with others through music is powerful for mental wellbeing - and a lot of fu...n too! Carmina Burana, our first concert back in October, showcases a cavalcade of local talent including conductor Jessica Gethin, Amy Manford - Soprano, tenor Perry Joyce, and baritone James Clayton along with the 130 voices of the WASO Chorus and UWA Symphonic Chorus. 20.01.2022 A fantastic first visit back at Perth Childrens Hospital this morning as part of WASOs Hospital Orchestra Project. It was a Meet the Strings morning - WASO musicians visited children on the wards followed by a Meet the String Quartet performance in the auditorium that was broadcast out to the wards on Starlight TV. It is always a joy to share music with patients, families and staff. Thank you to our partners School of Special Educational Needs Medical and Mental Health and the Starlight Childrens Foundation Australia.

20.01.2022 We were thrilled to welcome our Corporate Partners "Back on Stage" last night with a magical event held on stage at Perth Concert Hall featuring special performances from WASO ensembles throughout the night. WASO is very thankful to our Corporate Partners, without whose support we would not be the Orchestra we are today. The event was a fantastic opportunity to extend our thanks in person following a 5-month break from live performances. 17.01.2022 The band is back! This week marked the first time the full Orchestra has rehearsed together since March. These rehearsals have been designed to reconnect the Orchestra as a team before they hit the mainstage with an audience. AFL footballers need preseason training after a break, and just like any other elite team player, so do our musicians. The Orchestra played through some carefully selected repertoire conducted by Jessica Gethin - Conductor and all participants of our Eme...rging Conductor Program had the opportunity to conduct WASO for the first time. Plus, we workshopped West Australian composer Olivia Davies new work Stratus that was originally commissioned for its premiere performance in July this year. Last night's opening performance of Carmina Burana was truly sensational. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped us on our return to concerts. Three more nights to come - we can't wait to share this extraordinary experience with you once again.

08.01.2022 2020 is a milestone year for our Crescendo program, as we are now teaching all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 at North Parmelia and Medina Primary Schools. As a special opportunity this year, our oldest Crescendo students participated in a Conducting Workshop, delivered by one of WASOs 2020 Emerging Conductors, Jen Winley - Conductor. The students learnt about the role of the conductor and then had a go conducting their class. This was an invaluable opportunity for their musical development, and as you can see it was a lot of fun too!

05.01.2022 It was a delight to return to Perth Concert Hall earlier this month for the Composition Project final showing. This year, WASOs flagship Young and Emerging Artists program saw a COVID-19 friendly overhaul. 05.01.2022 WASO Principal 3rd Horn Robert Gladstones has been repairing and servicing brass instruments for schools, students, community players and professionals since 2004. He gave us a tour of his workshop where he brings instruments back to life.

In these tailored concerts, students got to know our musicians and their instruments in the comfort of their school environment.
